Help, my toyota corolla 2004 automatic transmission won't engage in drive until after few seconds in the morning if I start the car but if I put it in reverse and other gear, it would select. Also it does delay before switching to another gear when on motion, what could be the cause?

Regardless of the brand/model, What most mechanics will start with is this, check your transmission oil if it is not black, if you have enough, do a drain and refill with the recommended transmission oil if it is black and or short, see how the transmission responds to that.

Did you do any work or repairs recently on the gear? Specifically, did you change your gear oil recently?

changed the gear oil last year, nothing has ever been done on the gear. NOTHING

What happened before you changed the oil? That oil change is likely the culprit.

The same thing happened to my car early this year. 2007 Corolla sport.

My left shaft cup was bad. It was changed. But in the process, some gear oil poured out.

Mechanic said we should change the oil. That it was already very black and had this burnt smell. Which was true.

I asked him to just top it off. Because from what I has read, changing gear oil when the oil already has a burnt smell and black is a recipe for disaster. Better to just keep using it like that if there is no shifting issue.

And in my case, there was no shifting issue at all.

Mechanic kept convincing me till I agreed. We bought a can of Toyota type 4 oil and changed the oil.

I would later learn the oil we even bought was fake or China. Because I got it for around 32k, while Original is even more than double that price.

Fast forward to two weeks. My gear would not engage D in the morning till after a few seconds. It didn't happen all the time, it was occasional.

As time went on, the R joined. It just kept getting worse. And the frequency of occurrence became shorter. It was getting frustrating.

I confronted my mechanic and told him it was because of the oil change which I warned him about. He was still arguing with me. Said we should bring down the gear and change the fiber.

I refused. And eventually had to sell the car as is and get something better.

I'd advise you to just close eyes and buy tokunbo gearbox.

Check your water pump, your idler tensioner, your camshaft and crankshaft pulley. Also use genuine OE BELT. Also, check if oil is leaking into the belt

Do you still have the factory ac compressor or it has been replace, check if the compressor is sitting properly if not it can cause d issue.
Check power steering pump pully if it okay or not

Its already scrap. Sell it. Rhen.

I have had the catalyst replaced 2 years ago and ever then since a check engine and trac off light has refused to go off. The attached codes come up when I scanned the car.
Also had to service the gear by replacing the oil with ATF WS last week due to an accidental spill during a fan change.
Kindly point me to what could cause this and how to remedy it.
