My Experience at the German Consulate in Lagos – Visa Interview

Hey everyone,

I felt led to share my experience at the German Consulate in Lagos for my student visa appointment on 22nd July 2025 especially for those attending private universities in Germany. This group has helped me so much and I hope this post will be helpful for someone else out there.

I got to the embassy by 6:30 am and many applicants were already there. Arrive early, stay calm and don’t let fear or anxiety distract you. You need your full attention and composure.

Please print and photocopy all your documents before you arrive. The cybercafé vendors around the embassy will charge:
• ₦3,000 for colored printing
• ₦2,000 for regular black & white
• ₦1,000 for photocopying

They’re nice but they’ll bleed your pocket if you’re not prepared.

They may also tell you to:
• Drop your bag (you can’t enter with it anyway)
• Rearrange your documents

All these things cost money, so come organized and carry cash just in case.
Pro tip: the security guys at the gate of the German consulate can help you keep your bag “for something small” (I didn’t tell you sha 😂)

At the Gate: What to Expect
You’ll be asked to submit:
• Your passport
• The printed appointment confirmation mail (with date, time and ref number)

Listen carefully to the security team, they’ll give instructions.

Document Tips:
• Remove all staple pins (yes, even from transcripts and photocopies)
• Arrange documents: Original, then photocopy, original, then photocopy (no strict order, just that format)
• Hold your passport photo, don’t include it in the submitted docs
• Come with an ATM card that can pay at least ₦140,000 (visa fee)
• Don’t bring cash, they may not take it

During the Interview
Once inside, just follow instructions and breathe. The most important thing is getting in. From there, stay alert and listen carefully.

I was nervous at first, but once I got to the visa officer, I calmed down. The questions were basic:
• Your name
• Date of birth
• When you graduated, etc.

Then came the real part…
Private School Students – READ THIS!

She asked:
• How much did you pay as deposit?
• What’s your full tuition?

I told her the answers. Then I presented my Verpflichtung (Declaration of Commitment) and my school’s payment plan.

She went to ask her supervisor and came back saying it wasn’t going to work as the rule for private schools is FULL TUITION payment upfront, not payment plans.

So:
• My documents were not collected
• I didn’t write any test
• I didn’t pay the visa fee
• I was given a paper stating incomplete requirements
• The visa officer told me that once I pay full tuition, I can email them and get an earlier appointment (no need to wait another 1+ year for a new date)

I felt lost. I travelled from my state, booked a place in Lagos and spent a lot of money just to be turned back. It felt like a waste. But I trust God. This is a delay not a denial.

If you’re in this situation too, don’t lose hope. Just plan better and go again.

Final Tips
• Be fully prepared with all required documents and extra cash
• Don’t let fear eat you up they’re humans just doing their job
• Remember: God pass them 😂
• For private uni students: FULL TUITION OR BLOCKED ACCOUNT.
• Don’t rely only on Verpflichtungserklärung unless your sponsor is super loaded and the money has already been moved or shown clearly in bank statements

Wishing everyone good luck with their application.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer. ✨
GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS 💖

Please what I see in the German consulate is full tuition for 1year, m going for 3yrs bachelor but I’ve paid my full tuition for a year. When you say full tuition do you mean full tuition for the whole 3yrs

Goodmorning Lizzy. I am so sorry about this but thank God you won’t be delayed when you go back. Please I am going for my master soon and my interview should come up this year, I am going through Ghana and I am at the point where i have uploaded my documents and waiting to submit. On the part of Tuition it was clearly stated upload proof of deposit or payment if full 1yr tuition. I have been confused about this if it’s a must I pay my 1yr tuition. Now I have seen this you posted, i think it applies to me too that I need to pay that Tuition fee 1yr. I have been arguing this but thank you for confirming this. Did you also do your block account? So I would need my normal 11,994 black account and 1yr school fees confirmation?

Full tuition for one year
i applied for a one year msc program
so according to the requirements you need to pay for one full year and not the three years

Hi, thank you.
I understand your confusion, I initially thought because i paid deposit fee, had a payment plan with my private university in berlin and had a declaration of commitment that it would be sufficient proof of funds but it wasn't.

I would advice you to have a blocked account or a declaration of commitment(Verpflichtungserklarung) to show proof of your living expenses in Germany AND also have proof that your ONE YEAR tuition has been paid.

Wishing you the best.

How long did it take for the person to apply and get your declaration of commitment. Did the person send the original document to you after getting in Germany? How long does it take to get here(Nigeria)?

It took about two and a half weeks for the document to get to me in Nigeria. I’m not exactly sure how long it took my sponsor to process and collect it at the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners’ Office) in Germany. Make sure the original is sent to you via DHL or another reliable courier service, as the embassy won’t accept a scan or copy, they need the original Verpflichtungserklärung.

Please I used greypay to initiate a transfer to my admitted university on Friday around 6pm.my school replied me this morning that they are yet to receive my payment, then I contacted greypay customer care where they replied me that my fund was successful that my school should contact their Bank for them to trace the money.
Please for people that have used this App before, how long does it take for the receipant to receive the payment.
Please let me know if this was successfully resolved cos I am about to use GeegPay to pay my semester fee

I applied for a visa appointment in March 2023 (can’t remember the exact day)
My first appointment was set for 25th February 2025
I asked to reschedule and it moved to 29th April 2025
My documents still weren’t ready then especially the Declaration of Commitment, so I asked again and honestly, it was purely God that they rescheduled me a second time (we’re officially entitled to only one reschedule). I also had a very strong reason at the time: my mum passed unexpectedly in an accident and visa appointments weren’t my focus.
They finally gave me 22nd July 2025 as the new date.

Go with your complete documents or reschedule, its not worth that risk at all. They aren't interviewing people without complete documents.

Hello, good afternoon

Please I made enquires on this. I have my NPC attestation. For Affidavit currently they said it’s online. Is please is the online one accepted?
vffur45:
Yes, in 2025, your affidavit must come from a high court with it's new letterhead. The old version typed out on an A4 would be rejected. Either of your parents or the head of your family would go along with you with a government issued ID card (NIN, voters card also acceptable) to get it done.

Whoever signs your affidavit is whose details you would go with to the embassy for your interview.

If one of your parents deposed your declaration of age, you'll bring an ID containing the deponent's signature along with you to the visa interview.

Or
