U.S, Russia Ditch Nigerian Ports, Seek Access To Togo Port by Omooba77(op): 7:53am On Jul 29, 2025
Despite ongoing reforms and efforts to construct new ports and rehabilitate existing ones, world powers, including the United States and Russia, are actively seeking to secure access to the Port of Lomé in Togo which has emerged as a key maritime hub in West Africa.

The increase in volume of trade between Asia and West Africa has seen Lomé port transform into a key regional container port.

Major ocean carriers, specifically MSC, have responded by redeploying ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) to the route.

This has come as a major boost for liner connectivity of West African ports including Lomé.

In view of these trade advantages, the U.S has pledged to expand its African market access through Lomé port.

Last week, the U.S Embassy in Lomé, led by the Chargé d’Affaires, Richard C. Michaels, conducted a tour of the port facility.

The delegation also held a meeting with the management of Lomé Container Terminal, LCT, to explore commercial opportunities for U.S businesses.

“With advanced deep-water capabilities, cutting-edge equipment, and an annual throughput exceeding 30 million tons, Lomé offers U.S businesses unmatched access to African markets.

‘’Ongoing infrastructure expansion, including a dry-port and industrial zone, further enhances the port’s role as a growing gateway,” commented U.S Embassy in Togo.

The port tour followed shortly after U.S President, Donald Trump, met five African leaders in Washington.

The African leaders were largely from countries in West Africa, including Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal.

The meeting with Trump concentrated on trade opportunities for both sides, at a time the U.S government is cutting aid in Africa and other regions.

Meanwhile, Russia has ratified its military cooperation agreement with Togo, which was initially signed early this year.

As per the agreement, Russia and Togo will jointly hold military exercises, training exchanges and weapons and military equipment support.

Notably, the agreement also covers support in hydrography, navigation and combating piracy.

According to some observers, the agreement will give Russia unfettered access to Togo’s strategic seaport of Lomé. Visit by Russian military ships to ports in Togo is covered by the cooperation.

“Togo is considered the most organised and equipped in Tropical Africa. For example, the busiest seaport in West Africa is located on its territory,” said Vladimir Gruzdev, a member of the Russian Government Commission on Legislative Activity, which drafted the ratification law of the defence.

Recall that the Shipping Association of Nigeria, SAN, a group of foreign shipping lines operating in Nigeria had raised alarm over the loss of cargo to port of neighbouring countries due to the high cost of cargo operations in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Chairman of SAN, Boma Alabi, the group noted that most cargo shipped to neighboring countries eventually ends up in Nigerian markets.

She explained that this practice not only results in the loss of cargo but also leads to missed opportunities across the cargo clearance value chain, including jobs, revenue, and other economic benefits.

Alabi also expressed concerns over the proposed addition of four Free On Board (FOB) charges to the cost of clearing cargo at Nigerian ports, warning that such a move would further hinder trade and economic growth.

Ease of doing business in Nigeria is a mirage.

There’s nothing easy about running a business in this country.

Let the "Customs" keep chopping off their nose and calling it excise duties. Kobo wise Naira foolish

Clearing cars in that port is entailed with a lot of stress.... unnecessary ones, high costs.... And endowed with port rats...

That's what happens when customs are now more focused on revenue generation. The ease of getting goods in via the ports is frustrating

Okay o

You keep talking about real estate and hospitality!

Is that how Dubai, UAE, Qatar did it?

With the obscure mentality of majority of leaders and the led here.

I mean just look at the tribalistic reasoning of that leader yesterday whose face look like boko boko, hear him, he said we need the numbers

So the people in that part keep on recklessly skyrocketing their population irrespective of the rapid desert encroachment, the unavailability of resources to sustain those numbers.

Our country is not ready for the Dubai level of development yet.

150,000 containers. That's what Dangote imported through Togo ports. Because of how inefficient and incompetent the port authorities in Nigeria are. How will a ship spend over 3 months waiting to offload cargo at one port? In what world does that make sense? Nigeria is simply an embarrassment.

Instead of Nigeria to decentralise port across the nation , make them accessible and make policy to enable other ports to progress.. No !

They will rather suffocate lagos and build more port in that tiny city that was once a federal capital , the fear rise from keeping a tribe down while they hold themselves down too.

Their loss .

Revenue generation has nothing to do with it. Inefficiency, in capacity is what is wrong. Our immigration do generate more revenue today and yet have improved their efficiency.

We should be thinking of expanding these ports. This Atlantic Ocean no dey only Lagos na?!

Where's Ogun State bayi?

We have allowed Lagos monopolize everything in the country revenue generation, now importers never leave us?

Re: U.S, Russia Ditch Nigerian Ports, Seek Access To Togo Port by donleo92(m): 8:15am On Jul 29, 2025
I can help but to laugh at the country now, because this are serious things that the government should look at instead of building a road from lagos to Calabar that doesn't really have any economic value.

The government should decentralized the port. Divert some ships to pH and even warri but NO!!!!!

EVERYTHING MUST REVOLVE AROUND LAGOS

You're right. They make a lot of noise, but the bottlenecks remain, as the real problems are never tackled.

It's the same old song. Make grand gestures, travel, sign agreements, erect new structures, then declare that everything is now ok, but the SMALL SMALL PROBLEMS that frustrate businesses are never tackled. That's how they've run Nigeria since 1960.

Within a period of 10 years, APC completely destroyed this country and the little bragging right she had

A once the biggest economy in Africa, one of the fastest growing is now drowning in debts, economic downturn, hardship, hunger and starvation, insecurity etc.

And the presidency dare say that Nigerians were living fake life then?

Tinubu is not interested in developing ports along the Eastern corridor so he can continue to give Lagos - his personal purse, an advantage in Nigerian commerce

Stages and lifecycle of a Nigerian port development -

Stage 1 is grandiose
Stage 2 is bellicose
Stage 3 is morose
Stage 4 is lachrymose
Stage 5 is comatose

I think LDSP is still at stage 1.

Tinubu have finally succeeded in taking Nigeria backward. I told my friends before the 2023 election that Tinubu doesn't have anything to offer Nigerians. The Lagos the drug baron was referring to , it was not Tinubu that did those modern facilities and cleaning of Lagos. During Tinubu as a governor Lagos was very dirty and smells, agberoism and all sorts of crimes. Lagos state started working during Fashola and Amode. If you where in Lagos during Tinubu, Fashola and Ambode you will know.
