ConcernedDad:
Good day nairalanders. Please how do I stop my four year old son from stammering. He doesn't do it when speaking with his fellow kids, but when talking to his mom or me especially. He is my first son and can't imagine how it will be for him when he grows and wants to express himself.

A quick background to my topic. I'm the only one that Stammers in my family. Both in maternal and paternal. None of my siblings or relatives Stammers. I learnt it from a childhood friend when growing up. I know how it has limited me from reaching my full potentials in life.

Now my son is about to start his own and I'm wondering if stammering is hereditary. Please how do I stop it now he is still young. Medical experts in the house, any medical remedy for it. Thanks for your contribution.
Worry no more let me recommend Phytobyte A+ Neurogical disorder support NDS supplements. Check dem on social media . It works wonders and is mainly for children with speech problems

He speaks fluently when conversing with his fellow kids, but if he wants to speak to me, especially when I'm inquiring something important from him.
Your boy is not stammering, sir. You are scaring the young man. See, bro you don't have to be harsh with kids of this generation.

Don't disturb yourself.
My two daughters did the same thing. With time,it will be resolved on it own.
A four year old child is still learning how to talk.
Tell him to talk gently and not rush himself while talking.
By age 6 to 7,my daughters, stopped the stammering.

You need to show more patience when dealing with this, do not let him feel you're embarassed by it. Watch how it occurs, is it with some words, or consonants? If yes, finding alternatives to these words can be of help.

I stammer too, but more when with relatives, and when I'm anxious.

It will change in time! I have a friend who does that when growing up but now is normal, just pray for him.

Stammering is a communicable thing, not exactly hereditary....

He just emulates you, maybe you should let him stay with another family where nobody stutters
you're wrong. Stammer is often hereditary
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by aribisala0(m): 12:37pm On Jul 29, 2025
Try acting and singing training classes
1 to 1 coaching if you can afford it
Don't let him know it bothers you

I've been considering sending him to a relative but he is still young to stay with another person that is not his parents. Not that I Stammers all the time.
Sending him to a relative for what exactly?
To get abused into talking straight?
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by papyjaypaul: 12:44pm On Jul 29, 2025
Make him read more. Read aloud to himself or to you at home. The more he talks, the more it will go. He needs your confidence from home more than the impatience of the outside world. Let him keep practicing, with time he will get over it.

That's because he may be afraid of you. It's the fear that makes him look for the right words to say that will not make you angry.

How patient are you when you are inquiring something important from him.

Smile when you are talking to him and make him feel relaxed in the house.

I stammer when talking .... I noticed my little daughter was always copying me ,pronoucing words longer than expected ... what did I do different ?

I made her stayed with her mother who doesn't stammer for a longer period while I work in another state ... after few months she has adjusted and now she is fine
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by Rubyjade: 12:50pm On Jul 29, 2025
Model slow, calm speech: Speak slowly and clearly around him. Let him see that it's okay to take time to express thoughts.

Give him time: Don't finish his sentences or correct him. Let him finish what he’s saying, even if it takes longer.

Maintain eye contact and smile: Show him you're patient and listening, not rushed.

Normalize mistakes: Say things like, "It's okay to repeat sometimes. Everyone does."

Build confidence in private: Use positive affirmations, like:
"You're a great speaker. I love hearing your stories."

Talk one-on-one in low-pressure settings: Maybe during a walk, or while drawing or playing with him.

🚫 AVOID:

- Correcting or pointing out stammering directly.
- Telling him to "slow down" or "take a breath" repeatedly — this can make it worse.
- Showing frustration or anxiety when he stammers.
- Comparing him to others (even siblings)

Your concern as a father is a powerful first step in helping your son. Since you know what it’s like to grow up with stammering, you are uniquely positioned to:

Break the cycle, not just by correcting speech, but by creating a safe and confident environment.
Use your personal experience to support him emotionally and prevent the shame or self-doubt that often comes with it.
And again — the fact that he doesn’t stammer with other children is a very strong sign this is something you can successfully address now.

Lol, you don't learn how to stammer from people; it is simply genetic.
It is

I learnt it from a friend at basic school

My dad had to do sth... The very first day my parents noticed it

And that was the last day
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by likita27: 12:55pm On Jul 29, 2025
I used to have a daughter that stammers, and I happen to have a stutter as well
She no longer stammers what did I do?
Stammering runs in family.
Ensure no one makes fun of her when she talks. Making fun of them makes conscious of the stutter.
2) allow them to speak, even if they are going to stutter, listen to him,

I stammer too and have been able to control the urgency of my speech especially when i am angry and i have been able to achie undecidedve what i desire in life overtime.
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by Bahamas95(m): 12:58pm On Jul 29, 2025
Even you it's not too late for you to overcome stuttering, your son could even be the solution to your challenge.

Learn how to talk slowly and calmly most especially when he's around you, children are very fast to copy and paste. The surprising thing about them is that they learn bad habits faster.

Make him feel relaxed when speaking, he's traumatized.

Oga, most male child see daddy as role model. I was going to say change his school as he could have a friend that stammers until I read the part that says u stutter too. Baba, u said not much, if u don't do something about it now, nah u go suffer am pass due to regret. Stay away from him for now.
My first son tried it at a time, I used Cain and told him to always calm down & think b4 talking. It stopped after say 3 months.

Tobi came back from school one time, and started blinking like Nigeria's unstable power supply, his mother noticed it, and straightout beat him of out it in no time.

It may reduce with age. I used to stammer every day but it has gradually disappeared. I now stammer maybe once a week.
