Some Nigerians Are Unappreciative - Onanuga Defends Tinubu's Falcons Rewards by Pakute(op): 2:07pm On Jul 29, 2025
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday defended the reward package given to the Super Falcons following their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Onanuga, in a post on his X handle, expressed surprise at the criticism from some Nigerians over the presidential rewards, questioning why the gesture was being met with disapproval.

He drew a comparison with the BBNaija reality show, pointing out that its winner receives a N150 million grand prize.

“When you remember that Multichoice, the organizer of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote.

“President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit.”

DAILY POST reported President Bola Tinubu offered each player a cash reward of $100,000 and each coach and support staff member $50,000. He also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and 11 technical crew members.

Additionally, each member of the team will receive a three-bedroom apartment under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

The Falcons would be shocked seeing some Nigerians being unreasonable and childishly bitter, those who are yet to get over the election loss. The Falcons, national team players in other sports and lovers of sports will henceforth start to disassociate themselves with these set of people. Following Me President's gesture, I have seen young girls who are encouraged to look around their neighborhood for a football field or academy to kick off their career, some of whom had thought they only had to be on TikTok twerking and showing some skin. Now they believe they can be rewarded by their country if they put in the hard work. I have also heard parents saying their daughters have to play football.
God bless President Tinubu, God bless Nigeria.

I commend Tinubu for rewarding the girls.

That was how it used to be until tight fisted Buhari came and changed things.

Onanuga, think about it...! You do have a brain.

In a nation where hard working and dedicated civil servants, teachers, and other members of the labor force earn minimum wage peanuts, what or how exactly do you expect them to feel about their President doling out millions of Naira to footballers?!!

A nation where basics like Electricity, Potable water, and Security, not even mentioning good roads, are daydreams, do you expect citizens to jump for joy at such outlandish displays of monetary gifts?!!

How much did you give to individuals and families that suffered losses to flood and terrorist attacks?!!

Just recently, soldiers complained online about the meagre earnings and meals they receive... we all know their allowances are nothing to write home about.

By dashing Falcons money that is way higher than their Cup prize money, what exactly are you trying to prove?!! What message do you think suffering Nigerians will glean from that ostentatious gesture?!!

Make una dey think before rushing to defend and make posts.

That was how Buhari was dashing Billions as donations to Niger and other nations in conflict, while IDP camps suffered hunger and malnutrition.

Omo!!! Nigerian leaders and their supporters might have serious M£ntal Health Issues. undecided

It was a bit excessive! 50k usd would have been better for the players and 25k usd for the technical staff !

The money is too small sef. I'm not a fan of Tinubu but I really commend him for this kindness. Some of those girls are from poor home who the family members are looking up to them for survival. I doff my heart fot BAT and the governors forum but my vote remains for His Excellency Peter Obi

As long as it's from the President's own private account.

For this period, every kobo counts. Spending $100k on each player from govt purse will be a mismanagement of resources.

Rewarding the Super Falcons is a noble and worthwhile idea. However, a government that does not understand let alone appreciate the pain, anguish, bastardization it has inflicted upon its citizens can not be said to be benovalent.

Onanuga talks like an angry housewife..
This issue should not have been blown out of proportion with his crude interjections. Once he senses that the opposition is on an issue, he jumps in unguarded. Watch as this topic starts to make the global headlines because of the prominence he just brought to it. A non issue that should have been allowed to die a natural death..
You let the sleeping dog lie in some cases.
His involvement in this issue will only make it a bigger story and may demoralise the players.
Onanuga acts like a very untrained media upstart.
A bundle of disappointment.

Personally, I'm I different about the cash gift and other prizes that Oga Tinubu splashed on the Super Falcons. However, comparing it with the BBN depicts a very high level of cluelessness.

BBN is a program that makes Billions for the organizers, with the winner taking home only a paltry sum of N150m.

If the participation of the Super Falcons earned the Nigerian government say $30m in cash and foreign Direct Investment, then you can use the BBN scenario as a perfect Illustration.

Apart from that.. Just say kudos the girls and the TC and allow them to enjoy their own share of the national cake in peace!

Nope, not Buhari but right from Abacha who promised the 1994 Super Eagles houses but couldn't fulfill it, OBJ and GEJ did nothing as well. The last time our national team players were honoured as much was in 2007 by Umaru Yara'dua when the U 17 Golden Eaglets were hosted in Aso villa and given three bedroom house each and an national award if OON. There was a particular President ( OBJ) that the only thing he gave the teams that won was a Presidential handshake.

Even your cherished EPL, La Liga 7 the almighty UCL, the tournament prize is always lower than the reward.
