Uncoordinated actions in electricity regulations across states could threaten the stability and efficiency of Nigeria’s interconnected national grid, potentially causing power disruptions and undermining investor confidence, Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has said

He spoke on Tuesday at a meeting with state commissioners for energy on state electricity market development.

He emphasized the importance of federal involvement in state-level electricity market developments.

He explained that while states have the constitutional right to shape their markets, coordination with the Federal Government .

Adelabu emphasized the import of strong partnerships between Federal and state governments for accelerated electrification, expanding access to reliable and affordable power, and deepening market development.

He said such synergy will enable the two parties to safeguard the integrity of the national grid, optimise resources, and provide reliable and affordable electricity to all Nigerians.

He urged the commissioners to prioritise the electrification of unserved and underserved communities within their states.

He said expanding access for those who need it most remains a central pillar of the country’s national electrification agenda.

He reiterated the importance and the need for strong regulatory alignment and synergy across the entire electricity value chain.

“Our common goal is to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to reliable electricity that powers homes, businesses, industries, and drives our collective economic growth. To achieve this, regulators at the Federal and State levels must work hand in hand to harmonise standards, coordinate frameworks, and provide investors with clarity and confidence in the stability of the market.

“A fragmented regulatory environment, where different rules and standards apply without alignment, creates uncertainty for investors and operators alike. It can lead to disputes, inefficiencies, duplicated efforts, and conflicting obligations that ultimately slow down sector development.

“By maintaining strong regulatory cooperation, we can create a level playing field, attract more private sector participation, protect consumers, and ensure that everyone is working towards the same vision of a modern, efficient, and inclusive electricity sector that supports Nigeria’s economic ambitions.” he said.

I feel the energy market is still confused with its structure.
Imagine El Rufai had failed in completely privatising communication, we would've joined in the same story.
El rufai remains a credible brave man

Investors are mostly behind all these panic meetings and messages.

If the national grid was performing it's duty optimally, states wouldn't be so eager to have their own independent power bills.

The conclusion is that the federal government is scared of investors loosing money because every state would start providing adequate power and rake in all the profits instead.

This signals the true collapse of the national grid...

More control should be handed over to states regarding electricity

FG knows very well that if states starts generating and distributing power, TCN would loose out and national grid would gradually loose relevance

In my opinion, FG should gradually hands off Power, it's not something they should fight about

It's inevitable, if Nigeria is to make progress with power, States and even Local Governments would have to start generating and distributing their power

A progressive nation should dissolve most of these from the center (FG)

Okay o. What is the FG doing to integrate renewables into the national grid. I'm aware they are doing off-grid systems for unserved communities.
