Though she is yet to return to her club, Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala, is already getting signals of a heroine’s welcome at Bay FC after winning Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The National Women’s Soccer League side hosted Urawa Reds Ladies in the final game of their summer series on Sunday, when they displayed Oshoala’s picture with the WAFCON trophy at the PayPal Park.

“That’s our champion. Sending our love and congrats from Pay Pal Park,” the club posted via X as the announcer also rang it to the ears of the fans inside the stadium.

Playing in her sixth tournament, the six-time African Women’s Footballer of The Year scored Nigeria’s first goal at the tournament, during the 3-0 win over Tunisia, and led the team to a record-extending 10th title.

She started Nigeria’s first two games before starting the quarter-final against Zambia and the final game against Morocco from the bench.


Until the tournament, Oshoala had missed the national team assignment since the Olympics.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played with the national team. Obviously, there are so many things going on behind the scenes with me that I had to deal with personally. But whenever I’m here, whenever I’m on the pitch, I want to score goals. I want to play, help my teammates to get three points each game we play,” she said before the tournament.

During the tournament, the 30-year-old was also rumoured to have retired from international football, but she has dismissed the rumours.

“I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”

Oshoala has now won four WAFCON titles since entering her first tournament in 2012.

It's so pathetic that Onomè Ebi the Sergio Ramos of naija Falcons isn't part of this team receiving all the encomium. The preacher man was right after all. The race is not for the swift, or those with technical knowhow. Time and chance happened to them all.

Despite rumors of her retirement, she confirmed she's still committed to playing and helping her team.
