The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN) has officially suspended the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Prince Adewale Egbedun, due to what has been characterized as insubordination and abuse of office.

During a press conference held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, the Chairman of the Association, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, condemned Egbedun's conduct towards a respected royal figure, labeling it as inappropriate and uncultured. He remarked, "Our Association consists of well-cultured citizens of Nigeria, and we cannot allow one individual's actions to tarnish the image of our organization."

The chairman concluded the press conference by announcing the suspension of Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun from the association, effective until the resolution of a petition filed with the Deputy Inspector General of Police Zone XXI by the concerned royal father.

Monarch petitions IGP over alleged threat to life by Osun Speaker

The Alasi of Asi in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Isaac Oyewale, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over an alleged threat to his life by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun.

A leaked telephone conversation lasting about three minutes, allegedly between Speaker Egbedun and a family member of the monarch, has gone viral on social media.

In the audio, the Speaker, speaking in Yoruba, was heard hurling insults at the traditional ruler and threatening physical assault should the monarch attempt to enter his domain.

In the recording, the Speaker reportedly said, “This is Speaker Egbedun on the line. I want you to tell him, it seems the king is cursed. I was attacked, and he was talking rubbish. I’ve been avoiding him. If he comes to Asi, I’ll make sure he is beaten, his crown removed, and he is sent to Ilesa. If he is near you, let him hear this. What is my offence? He keeps disrespecting me and I’ve kept quiet. If he values his life, he should not come to Asi today.”

Reacting to the threat, Oba Isaac Oyewale said the incident stemmed from a minor accident involving a car belonging to one of his subjects and a vehicle in the Speaker’s convoy.

According to the monarch, “One of my subjects’ cars hit a vehicle belonging to the Speaker. Despite our pleas, the driver was arrested and taken to Ilesa, and later transferred to Osogbo. I got involved to intervene because both the Speaker and the individual are my subjects. But Egbedun has been misusing his power. He claimed I orchestrated an attack on him, which is false.”

The monarch further stated, “I have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, and I’m aware that action has been initiated. Nonetheless, my life is under threat. He even threatened to bathe me in my own blood. The abuse of power by Speaker Egbedun must be urgently addressed.”

When contacted for his reaction, Speaker Adewale Egbedun briefly said, “He sent thugs to attack me. You can talk to my Chief Press Secretary; he will give you the full details of what happened.”

The Alasi of Asi town, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Akorede, has revealed that the viral audio online was a conversation between the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun and one of his daughters.

Oba Akorede, who spoke with InsightMedia via telephone interview on Wednesday, revealed that he had to leave his that night before the arrival of some hoodlums who came and started shooting sporadically and harassed everyone within the premises.

Speaking on the incident, Oba Akorede explained that he was instrumental to the electoral victory of Egbedun, but “since he won, I have reduced to nothing. He abuses me at every slight opportunity and threatens me, too.

“My hotel and his house share fence. I gave him the land, but immediately he became speaker, he started digging my fence and said he wanted to expand. It was Omooba Olagunsoye Oyinlola and other personality that intervened and asked me to let it go.”

When asked what happened that led to the call by the Speaker to his daughter, the monarch said, “he (Egbedun) called on that one boy crossed him while coming home and that he was going to arrest him. I only cautioned him not to arrest him but he said I was responsible for whatever the boy did. He got the boy arrested and detained last week.

“On Saturday, I had some guests at my hotel and after our meeting, one of my guest was speaking with one his security details and was advising the security man not to ensure he protects human rights. I didn’tnot pay attention to the conversation.

“Later I just a call from him accusing me of conniving with his security man to plan against him. I was provoked and I hung up.

He then started calling me, and as I didn’t pick, he called my daughter and sent threats to me. I had to leave Asi that Sunday night because of his threats. He even sent thugs and security men to come and be shooting at my palace that night. They entered the palace and harassed everyone they saw. Only God saved me from him.”

A leaked audio where a man, who identified himself as the speaker, Egbedun called and threatened the monarch through his daughter..

In the leaked audio, Egbedun was heard asking about the whereabouts of the monarch, and the woman at the other end of the call who the monarch identified as his daughter, said the monarch has traveled.

The man who introduced himself as the speaker of Osun Assembly in the audio threatened to get the monarch beaten, strip him of his title, and get him remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.

According to the speaker in the audio, the monarch has been disrespectful, adding that he would be the one to teach him a lesson.

The man who identified himself as the speaker, Egbedun, in the leaked audio was heard saying, “Good afternoon, this is the speaker, Egbedun talking. Is Alasi around? I want to send you to Alasi. God has destined that Alasi will be dealt with through me. He has said a lot of things, and I’ve been avoiding him, but he has done it to the peak.

“I was attacked and Alasi was talking rubbish. He will be arrested and if he is truly a man, he should go and fetch his power wherever he put it. If he comes to Asi tonight, I will ask people to beat him.

“Alasi was cursing me yesterday. God says I will be the one to punish him. They will remove his crown, beat him and I will suspend and make sure he is remanded in Ilesa tomorrow.

“He is an animal. If he is a man, he should come to the palace today. Ogun (god of iron) will kill him wherever he is. He won’t come back safely.

“Once, I suspend him tomorrow, he should call his godfathers. It won’t be well with him and his family. This is total respect. If he values his life, he should not come to Asi tonight. If he dares to come tonight.”

While speaking with InsightMedia, Oba Akorede confirmed that the viral audio was a conversation between Speaker Egbedun and his daughter (name withheld).

He said the conversation was on Sunday.

“That’s the voice of my daughter. Egbedun called her on Sunday and threatened her,” the monarch said.

According to Oba Akorede, the speaker reached out to some of his friends to plead with him on his (speaker’s) and he the duo had a phone conversation via a third party’s phone on Tuesday.

“After I left the town because of his threat, I went to hiding and he started calling me. He later spoke with me yesterday via phone of someone he sent to me.”

When disrespect becomes recurrent

The voice note purportedly attributed to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, could not have emanated from a responsible leader occupying such an exalted office, especially not when the vitriol in question is hurled at a traditional ruler, and not just any monarch, but one from his very hometown. For that reason, I would rather not believe that the voice belongs to the Speaker.

However, a moment of introspection into the Speaker's antecedents and his general disposition towards traditional institutions may compel a reconsideration of that restraint. For keen observers of Osun politics and the Speaker’s public engagements, it is not out of character for him to address royal fathers with a noticeable lack of decorum.

You would recall that in the aftermath of the recent developments surrounding the chieftaincy review and the issuance of a white paper, wherein the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdulrasheed Ayotunde Olabomi Odundun, publicly expressed his reservations, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, in his reaction, employed highly disrespectful and unbecoming language directed at the revered traditional ruler. Among the most contemptuous statements were: the assertion that “he is not above the law and must remember that he remains a subject of the governor,” the characterization of his media briefing as “media theatrics that reveal his lack of civility,” and the scathing remark that “it is utterly absurd to witness someone who ought to embody the highest standards… disparaging a leader.” "Given the stature and age of the Aragbiji, one would expect him to exercise restraint and decorum, upholding the dignity of the throne he occupies." Even more troubling were the phrases describing Kabiyesi’s position as “laughable and lamentable” and the veiled threat that “should he allow his pride to cloud his judgment, he shall face the consequence.” These utterances amount to a public affront on the person and stool of the Aragbiji, reflecting a deeply troubling disregard for the dignity, cultural relevance, and sanctity of traditional institutions in Yoruba society.

I did not fabricate this. Of course, I have no reason to. If you are in doubt as to whether our Honourable Speaker made these statements, I refer you to the Osun Defender publication of February 1, 2025. These remarks have also been widely circulated on social media and other media platforms.

As the Yoruba people wisely say in their philosophical aphorism, "Bí ojú kò bá tọ̀ ti oko, ojú tọ̀ ti ilé." If one chooses to doubt the authenticity of the voice note in circulation, the documented news of February 1 has already validated the Speaker’s apparent disregard for traditional institutions. This incident speaks volumes, not just about the personality of the Speaker, but also about the calibre of individuals we elevate into positions of leadership and authority.

The Osun Speaker may need to learn that power is transient, and after the expiration of his tenure, he would still need the same traditional leaders he has once disparaged.

We've being an advocate for youths in government. From Hon. Bankole till this moment,those we've gotten so far are nothing but a ruse. Aside from the monarch being an over 70yrs of age,his position and age is something compared to the age and position of the errand and abusive dancer's speaker. Something urgent must be done to caution and restore normalcy in every corners of Osun.

Unfortunately, the society the elites have created for us allows younger generations to denigrate every traditional stool, simply because it has become compromised beyond belief.

Gone are the days when an individual or group denigrated a traditional stool and suffered immediate consequences. There was decorum and civility, unlike today, when stools are simply occupied by the politicians' most cherished personalities, for their own personal gain and not for their merit. This is the price of leadership failure we must live with. Sad!

In Osun State, the PDP-led government has shown complete disregard for our traditional institutions. They have used executive orders to unlawfully sack kings and undermine the authority of our royal fathers.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly has openly abused his office to intimidate traditional rulers. He attempted to molest the Aragbiji, and in a leaked voice note, he was heard threatening to dethrone and physically assault his own Kabiyesi.

This level of disrespect for our culture and heritage is unacceptable. As we move towards the 2026 elections, let us rise with one voice. Let us use our votes to chase out this government that has trampled on our traditions and insulted our royal institutions.

no evidence of that. This is not the first time the speaker has been cursing kings in Osun State. It's part of his behaviour to curse people.

Forty, Foolish, and Dangerous!

There was a time when the phrase “Not Too Young To Run” surged through the Nigerian consciousness like a prophetic hymn. It was sung with conviction, recited with the fervour of daily adhkār, laced with hope and youthful defiance. But in hindsight, perhaps a more honest mantra would have been “Not Too Young To Ruin.”

The proof is no longer abstract. A former Youth Governor now dances with the EFCC, accused of plundering billions meant for the people. And just yesterday, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, barely past his 40th birthday, was accused in a circulating voice recording of threatening a traditional ruler. His own king. His own town. A 70-year-old man. In his words, he barked at the king: “Ogun maa fi eje Kabiyesi wẹ.” He assured: “Won a gba ade l’ori Kabiyesi.” He cursed: “Eranko lasan-lasan ni Kabiyesi.” He declared: “Ko ni da fun Kabiyesi t’iran-t’iran.” And many more missile-like utterances too caustic to repeat here.

I listened. And what poured from that tape was not just disgrace; it was a desecration. A violent evisceration of the codes that govern respect, culture, and public decorum. His language seethed with arrogance, soaked in the bile of impunity. The monarch, by reports, fled to Lagos for safety. Imagine that, a king exiled by a boy drunk on borrowed power.

Now pause. Think. If the third most powerful man in a state can, without hesitation, vow to unleash thugs on a traditional ruler, to slap him, to throw him into detention without cause, what then is the fate of the ordinary Osun citizen? When lawmakers morph into gang leaders, what scaffold remains to hold justice upright? When those entrusted with the gavel trade it for a whip, democracy loses its voice, and tyranny dons youthful skin.

A youth untamed is chaos in motion. Like a trigger-happy policeman with an AK-47, he is dangerous, directionless, and devastating. Compare that to George Finch, a 19-year-old who now leads Warwickshire County Council in the UK, managing a £2 billion budget. You would expect recklessness. Instead, you meet composure, seriousness, and public spirit. Traits sorely missing in our own domestically-grown, forty-year-old ‘youths’.

The English say, “A fool at 40 is a fool forever.” Let us hope, for the dignity of Osun and the soul of governance, that the Speaker does not become a living monument to that proverb.

Royal Desecration: Osun Speaker, Wale Egbedun Should Step Aside Now – NNPP State Chairman

Osun state chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Dr Tosin Odeyemi, has asked that Hon. Adewale Egbedun step aside as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly for his recent unruly and uncouth behaviours towards Alashi of Ashi, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac.

In a viral audio, Egbedun was heard calling the monarch unprintable names, threatening to remove him and threatening to make Ogun, the god of iron, swim in his blood if he dare step into Ashi any time soon.

This has degenerated to brews on social media as the monarch has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 1X on threat to his life by Egbedun.

In his response, Egbedun admitted to have resulted into that phone call due to what he described as ‘threat of further violence’ by the Alashi.

But in swift reaction, Odeyemi said on no justifiable reasons should a number 3 citizen of the state resulted into gutter languages when referring to even an ordinary citizens not to talk of a revered traditional ruler.

According to him, “It’s embarrassing and shameful for Egbedun to have reacted in such manner. My thoughts when I first listened to the audio was that his phone was cloned but when I read his response this morning where he admitted to have been the one, I was surprised.

“No matter the offence of Alashi, Egbedun should have made use of all the established avenues to report the monarch and call the monarch to order rather than resulting into an insolent and childish acts.

“If Egbedun has no regard for his hometown monarch, he could have at least, as a Yoruba man, have a level of respect for the stool Alashi is occupying which is permanent compared to political posts.

“The monarch is old enough to be his (Egbedun) father, he should have shown decorum as a fortunate youth in the state rather than exposing our dear state to a ridicule as seen on all social media platforms presently.

“He is ruining the chances of youth, not only in Osun state, but in Nigeria, as people will start having second thoughts on entrusting power and position in younger generations.

“It is shameful and uncalled for. Egbedun has shown he has no capacity to manage crisis. If he could do that to his own king, definitely, no monarch in the state is above his tongue lashing sooner or later if something urgent is not done.

“As a stakeholder in the polity of Osun state, the honourable thing for Egbedun to do now is to step aside. He hasn’t shown any sign of remorse. Leaders of thoughts should rise fast and lend their voices to this call. Osun belongs to all of us.
