Yes we all used to call it Agbari Ojuku in the West. That’s its name. I even called it same yesterday and I am from Lagos.
In Ondo state where I come from it is called "Adogan" not "Agbari Ojukwu" but "Agbari Ojukwu" is not alien to me.

Ask your elders. The pot may have its native name but it’s generally known as Agbari Ojuku

Ewe Akintola.

Back in the day, when you are bruised from playing football, your friends will grab a handful of that ewe, mash them between the palms and drip the resulting fluid on the injury.

I think it made such bruises heal quicker.

Can you imagine ajebo indomie generation going through that grin

Is the plant still around.

It was everywhere back in the day.
Very much around.

Still saw it two years ago when I traveled home

You can find ewe Akintola in every Yoruba land.

immaculatesense:
There is a plant called Akintola.
We are used to naming things after people probably whose name were generally known when that thing became common in the environment.
NOTE: It is not all parts of Yoruba land that adopts those names. It is called so in Ondo state but not in Ogun state.
Re: Why Do Yorubas Call This Pot 'Agbari Ojukwu'? by Belurved1(m): 7:46pm On Jul 31, 2025
Don't mind him jare...omode lo nse. So iwo o mo "agbari ojuku"

The nickname of that adogan size is called "Agbari ojuku" but to be sincere I've never thought about the meaning of the name for one day. All I know was that "Agbari is the head, then ojukwu is Igbo name....so we don't really care about the combo.....awon Babawa lomo ojukwu tan npe.

Hey Ogbeni;
Agbari is brain.....brain is opolo.
Agbari is head.
Agba-ori(Agbari)...bigheaded person.

Sheuns:
If you look at it, it’s a compliment.

Agbari means brains

The pot cos it’s big is named that. It can simply mean Ojujwu had a big brain.

So, are you saying all Yorubas call it agbari ojukwu? Or Ewe Akintola?
All Yorùbás call it Ewe Akintola.
It was Akintola that brought the plant to Nigeria and spread it via helicopter according to the history. Where ever the plant grows, the manure is very much better and it is good for farming.
Igbo call it Awolowo because they thought it was Awolowo that brought it down to Nigeria.

That's because the pot shares similarities with Ojukwu's big round head.. nothing dey inside.

Some folklores claim Ojukwu transformed into something of that nature during the civil war, yet he was no match for the Black Scorpion.

That Awolowo leave is very good as antimalaria, applied directly on small area of bleeding to due to injury and added to cattle feed in combination of elephant grass.

You are right. My mother sold household utensils in her younger days. Agbari ojukwu is usually painted black. And it looked like a soldier's helmet. The type we see british army wear in war movies. This is koko iron.

Validated:
Not a plant, but a "wild weed' that is used for reforestation and manure, same as "mucuna" beans, (not sure of spelling), as the leaves are shed regularly. It is so called in Delta and most South South states, not just Igboland.
Awolowo leaf, one of the most potent cures for peptic ulcer..

We in Akwa Ibom also call a certain weed Awolowo. I guess it may be the same weed. But for ours I learned it was a twisting from "Awod owo" which mean "human killer" as it was initially feared that the weed was poisonous and kills people. But today it's considered medicinal and typically used on wounds as its believed to aid healing.

That is not true. There is an history behind it but I don't want to talk about it because it does not portray my tribe positively and I don't betray my tribe no matter what (I am not a bastard that uses left hand to describe his father's house).
Thanks.

This morning s not agbari Ojukwu. Agbari Ojukwu is another type of metal pot. It's lighter in weight and always black even the new ones that have not been used.
