dermmy:Validate your source. Turkey has not even inducted the KAAN into its air force. The deal with Indonesia is for 48 Kaan jets with Turkish engines. WriteerNg:The deal was too good to pass up. Turkey already produces the GE F110 under license. This engine powers the F-16. The Ottomans are using the knowhow to design and produce an indigenous engine -- the TF-35K. The deal with Indonesia is for 4 squadrons of only jets fitted with the indigenous engine and complete technology transfer. Turkey needs the fund infusion. Indonesia gets a ready-made 4.5 gen aircraft complete with the tech to kickstart their indigenous production effort. Turkey has the same arrangement with Egypt and Pakistan. Of course, there could still be issues. Engine development is challenging. Ask India and Elon. Program costs have already exceeded $100m per unit. If the Bayraktar drone is any indication, the Kaan could turn out to be a poor performer versus its class. But from Indonesia's perspective, $10B bet for a 4.5 jet with complete tech transfer is defensible. No one will sell Indonesia 4 squadrons of passable 5 gen jets with full tech stack transfer in 2025. They had wanted to get Su-35s from Russia, but it does not appear as though they have the appetite for the geopolitical discomfort that'll cause. Plus, if they desired tech transfer, the Iran debacle was a red flag. What I can say though is that the one-sided dominance of Western platforms in the fighter jet space will end in the 2030s. Europe is designing their own 6th gens. Russia will turbocharge development after the end of the Ukraine war. China is not slowing down anytime soon. And more and more nations will be only one or at most 2 generations behind the superpowers. Case in point, China permitted Pakistan selling Nigeria the 4th gen JF-17. And now we're looking to acquire the 4.5 gen J-10C. After the Ukraine war, Russia will flood the market with fighters at low prices. -Lord 8 Likes 2 Shares |

LordAdam16:Ukraine finds it difficult to shoot down the jet-powered "Shaheds" that attacked Kyiv today, said Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat. They fly at speeds over 500 km/h and manoeuvre. "In fact, on radars, such a drone looks like a cruise missile. Not all the means we use today can intercept such targets," says Ignat. Military experts also note that these drones are practically unreachable for Ukrainian interceptor drones, helicopters, light aircraft, and mobile fire groups. If they fly at an altitude of 9 km, only jet aircraft or large anti-aircraft missile systems can shoot them down. And considering their high speed, the reaction time is reduced. To shoot down such drones, full-fledged anti-aircraft artillery equipped with radars, optical stations, and programmable shells is needed.
