While the concern about protecting local businesses is understandable, banning Chinese citizens—or any foreign nationals—from engaging in small and medium-scale trading may not be the most balanced or effective solution.

🇳🇬 Nigeria’s economy thrives on openness and competition, and policies that are overly restrictive or discriminatory could send the wrong signal to the international community, potentially discouraging foreign investment as a whole.

Instead of outright bans, the government can:

Strengthen and enforce local content policies, ensuring Nigerians have priority access to certain sectors or trade spaces.

Offer grants, tax incentives, and business development support specifically tailored to Nigerian SMEs so they can scale and compete effectively.

Regulate fairly to ensure foreign traders operate within the rules—such as licensing, taxes, and community engagement—but not exclude them purely based on nationality.

Many Chinese businesses bring employment, infrastructure development, and supply chain improvements—especially in manufacturing and logistics. Shifting them away from trading into only “large-scale” business by force could hurt informal economies and even result in job losses among the Nigerians they currently employ.

The real issue isn’t just competition from foreigners—it’s the need to empower and protect local businesses with smart, enforceable, and fair trade policies that build Nigerian capacity, not fear.
franchasng:
This is laudable, Nigerian government need to emulate this.

Ban Chinese people from operating small and medium scale trading businesses.

Chinese citizens should only be allowed to operate manufacturing, production and other large scale businesses.

They should be banned from opening small and medium scale trading businesses in Nigeria.

If this is not done, Chinese will soon Pursue Nigerian small and medium scale businesses from operation

The wise are finally waking up to the fallacy of pan africa. Not so long it was Ghana and now Tanzania is following suit, about damn time.I give a standing ovation to this move even though at times is a bitter pill to me as a South African because when we said everybody needs leave us and go fix their countries we were called afrophobic (some made up fancy term to sound smart) by these same countries that are now kicking foreigners out.So where is the AU at? They used to be so loud when it was us🤔🤔🤔

I applaud but at the same time like karma finally found the right address
WHY IS GHANA A MODEL FOR YOU?

U THINK AFROPHOBIA WILL TAKE ANY OF US ANYWHERE?

DO U REALLY BELIEVE SO?

it all depend on how the government is doing it,glo services are not good, they have the funds to make it better but they're using it for advert instead of delivering better services
Re: Tanzania Bans Foreign Nationals From Running Small Businesses by Nnamdipapa(m):
With due respect, Africans are not smart, and the reason we are where we are today. This will discourage the inflow of capital into the country. Why not enact strict laws involving capital requirements for small businesses and make it a requirement for them to hire at least two locals? We are just too tribalistic. Look at the Western world, they are always seeking people to start businesses in their countries, albeit with legal immigration documents.

Unfortunately, the law of economics doesn't support that growth would occur that way. It rather favors competition by as many people as possible. Indeed, the government would make more money that way by taxing them
If you're that conversant with the said 'law of economics', you would understand that there's a huge gap between theory and practice. What competition or type of economics do you want to achieve with a depressed or dissatisfied citizenry?

You should know that the Tanzanian authority are responding to the concerns of their people, as they would be an irresponsible government if practical steps are not taken to address these concerns.

Also, bear in mind that Tanzania is a holiday destination, a huge part of their economy, therefore presents a huge opportunity for the locals to engage in local businesses to sustain the tourism sector.

Someone uploaded that APP in his brain when he was not looking so he is running the APP
They talk as if competition is some kind of higher morality
What has Trump been doing all year

China does a lot worse , they have a list FNIL A no go area for foreigners

Is there anyone one that would ask his children to enter a competition with other kids and he will pay the school fees of the winner because he loves competition

When the APP is running the brain cannot work

Yes, I am conversant with the law of economics, and it's not that I don't understand your point. But you seem to believe that Tanzanian will prosper because of this law. And that's where I disagree with you.

Yes. the citizens can get employed but the government should get ready for the retardation of the economy, including that very sector.

You can't get everything you want in economics. You always lose something to get another- what Adam Smith calls opportunity cost.

By the way, if you think this law is so good; why do you think that other countries around the world are not enacting the same law?

Any small move to protect the citizens the next phrase is "seems someone is afraid of competition"

In the first place must my citizens compete with you??
Must they compete in their own enclaves?
This is what a lot of Nigeria people going to other nations don't want to hear. If your country doesn't protect you by staving off other nationals from the basic and grassroots business how will you feel? Abandoned? Right?

Sounds very much like someone is scared of competition.
What stupid competition?
You travel all the way to a village in Tanzania just to go and be selling fish with the local village woman abi?
Why must you go to struggling African country and be competing with them instead of investing?
Better stop this nonsense talk of competition, compete at higher level not grass root level

If I should become a leader today one of my top priorities is security, and job security is part of it. That is the reason my locals voted me in.
There are some jobs I will predominantly leave for the locals alone to operate, so a foreigner who is coming will know what he's coming to do and the kind of jobs and business available for him.
You don't just come in and put pressure on the paltry resource I am using to sustain existence of my locality
Before we even admit you in, there must be clear purpose of ur visit, and it's either for pleasure(source of income for us) or bigger business (source of income and jobs for the locals)

U CANNOT EXPECT TO WORK IN OTHER AFRICA COUNTRIES AND THEN BAN THEM FROM WORKING IN YOUR COUNTRY.

THE ONLY THING THAT NEEDS TO BE BANNED IS CRIME.

WORK IS DESIRABLE IN MY HONEST OPINION.

IF U CAN WORK AND SURVIVE WITH US WITHOUT INVOLVING YOURSELF IN CRIME, U ARE WELCOME.

COME WITH YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
