‘Nigeria House in deteriorating condition in US, staff owed several months’ salaries’

By Joshua Odeyemi

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) in the US has condemned the ‘deteriorating’ condition of the Nigeria House in New York, calling for urgent action.

In a statement issued by Ms Funmi Dike, spokesperson for the body, on Monday, in New York, OAN also lamented that staff of the Nigerian mission are owed several months of salary arrears.

OAN, a foremost diaspora body committed to the welfare and progress of Nigerians in the US, said it was “compelled to draw urgent and serious attention to the deplorable and deteriorating condition of the property”.

The iconic skyscraper, located in the heart of Manhattan, houses both the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN and the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York.

“This imposing structure, once a symbol of national pride and diplomatic strength, has now become a metaphor for systemic neglect and administrative irresponsibility,” OAN said.

“Over recent weeks and months, the building has descended into a condition unworthy of the great nation it represents.

“Foremost among the current challenges is the complete failure of the central air conditioning and ventilation system in a building that was architecturally designed without cross-ventilation or operable windows.

“During one of the hottest summers recorded in New York City, Permanent Mission and Consulate staff are forced to work in suffocating, oven-like conditions, relying on hand-held fans strapped to their bodies.”

OAN stressed that the building’s decaying infrastructure, including poor maintenance, plumbing issues, unreliable elevators, stained ceilings and outdated fixtures, reflected an embarrassing lack of foresight and priority from those responsible for the upkeep of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions.

OAN said it was equally disturbing that the staff of the missions had reportedly not been paid salaries and allowances for several months.

“This is unacceptable in any civilised society, let alone for officers posted abroad to represent Nigeria and those hired from the host countries.

“This is a recipe for illegal activities, where employees look for illicit ways to make ends meet, or fleece their fellow Nigerian applicants for Consular services.”

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, did not pick up his calls and did not respond to messages sent to his WhatsApp number when contacted over the issues raised.

Abdulkadri Alkasim, a media aide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, declined comment, saying the questions should be directed to the spokesperson of the ministry.

Haba Racoon you are not less than 50 years old and you are talking like this. Haba wisdom is suppose to come with age. While I know that the necessary things to do to checkmate this will be done by this administration, your attributing this rots and deteriotion to Tinubu who is barely two years in office is just childish.

You called two years barely?

Two years is enough to make changes that will impact the people positively.

Not paying salaries is a sin before man and God.

Your president is clueless , just admit it.

Even one month of bad leadership is enough to destroy institutions and systems that have stood for decades. APC's 10 years of being in power has been an absolute disaster

We were told Tinubu will hit the ground running, more than two years of subsidy is gone, Nigeria doesn't have ambassadors. And you think foreign countries will not deal with us anyhow. I pity those who sold all they had to relocate, they may be here very soon to enjoy good governance under Bola. grin grin grin grin grin

I will never complain of hunger because God Almighty has blessed me long before tinubu became president .

It's your people that are complaining of hunger and honestly, I feel for them.

Give Nigerians good leadership that's all every Nigerian ask for , the rich , the middle class that tinubu is about to completely erase, and the poor.

Tinubu is a calamity that has befallen this country . He's worse than buhari.

13 months was enough for Obi to have sorted out the wages of striking doctors but he allowed essential workers like doctors to go hungry for 13 months and didn't even pay the arrears, SMH.

Nigeria: Pensioners Urge Tinubu to Pay Arrears

26 March 2003
This Day (Lagos)

Lagos — Pension teachers in Lagos State under the aegis of Teacher Pensioners of Nigeria (TEPAN) have urged Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to review his stance on paying the harmonised three year old outstanding pension allowance or risk losing their votes.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of TEPAN, Mr. Ayodabo 'Lade, accused Tinubu of failing to pay the arrears to teachers on their correct pension grade since the year 2000, contrary to what was obtainable in other five States of the South-west controlled by the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

The Nigeria House situation is a visible symptom of Nigeria’s wider institutional decay and lack of prioritization of international representation. Urgent intervention is needed — not just for the sake of image, but to ensure Nigeria functions as a respected global player, with dignity and operational integrity.

what has prevented this administration from doing what is necessary since 2023 till date?

if this administration can be dashing female national players hundreds of thousands of dollars in the space of one month, why has it taken it two years to do the needful for its workers and to provide a conducive work environment for them?

But these embassies generate revenue through various consular services. Why can't they pay themselves and clean up their digs.

I think one serious reform that should take place is for these embassies to create serious and organized business desks to facilitate international trade and get paid for brokerage.

Based on your knowledge of how Americans, Canadians, Britons and other japa developed countries got their good leadership, can you please say WHO gave it to them huh

Why don’t the middle class engage in the various activities and aspects of politics, democracy and governance processes like Fela’s mom did in Abeokuta several decades ago? Engage with their money, time, talents etc.

When the cat is away or nonchalant, why won’t the mice play and occupy the house until the cat is alive to its responsibilities?

He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics.

The slowpoke doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”

my brother its very appalling, I am really surprised that Tinubu can deliver this sub par performance after being a critic for decades and finally having a chance to show stuff, has delivered the worst performance ever
To show that it's not that something is wrong with him that he has been consistent in character is his greedy and selfish behaviour, he did not fail to indulge in personal angrandisiment and extravagant life style for personal comfort, it is only in performance for the people that he failed
He and is supporters are quick to point to the gains of subsidy removal as increase in revenue, if that be the case what is he doing with all the money
if he cannot pay workers and pensioners entitlements at home and abroad, cannot meet many financial obligations to the ordinary people except to the political class and the ones for show offs and political statements
What's the man doing there gan
