I don't know of cats but I certainly know of dogs. Dogs get depressed for few days if their puppies die or get missing so in extension, the same may apply to cats.

There's actually an qge the kittens reach that the mother cat won't mind if they are sold. By that time, she's done her job.

Only thing is that you don't leave a kitten too long after that stage with the mother as she can be one too attached to it, and separation then becomes painful

Speak to your neighbour. Perhaps send her a small write up about the issue.

She may sell them so as not to spend money on them. If you're capable, tell her you'll take care of them until they are old enough to be sold

I think they do, the mother cat has strong mother instincts, she wants to care for her children and protect. A cat get restless when they are alone without their family. They may cry or move around to find their family. They are social creatures and smart.
