Medical acronyms and abbreviations are commonly used in hospitals to streamline communication and documentation.

Understanding these terms is crucial for healthcare professionals and patients alike. Some common examples include ED or ER for Emergency Department/Room, ICU for Intensive Care Unit, and OR for Operating Room.

I have been seeing Rx on prescription sheet but never understood what it means until I became an adult.

Now something piqued my curiosity yesterday when I visited a relative in a hospital and saw the acronym "PACU" I have been searching the meaning but yet to arrive @ it. Can the medics in the house please help? Thanks

Meanwhile feel free to add your own medical acronyms not in the picture for a wider audience education.

I am familiar with IV,but Again where is IM(intra Muscular)?

Modified:

There are some injections you will see and they will be specially classified as opiods, some as well will be classified as IM and also IV.
But Again, some injections can be IM/IV.

I prefer IV mode of taking injections though 👍

PACU is Post Anaesthesia Care Unit. It's a setting or unit where a patient is placed on observation immediately after a surgery while recovering from anesthesia effect. tongue

Rx doesn’t mean prescription but the wrong meaning gained ground over time with most people not bothering to get educated on it wink

It is a symbol that means recipe.

The symbol is derived from the Latin word recipe or “recipere,”which means "to take". The word was later abbreviated and became Rx as we know it today.
