As far as Lagos is concerned, Surulere is a well structured area. The only problem is that the drainages have been blocked thereby leading to occasional flooding during rainy seasons.
lexy2014:
can you name these "structured areas"?

are "structured areas" immune from flooding?

on which drainage did these people build their houses?

My dear, if those kind of flood your are referring to should take place in Lagos, the flood during the time of Noah in the Bible will be a child's play. If you must know, the flooding in some parts of Lagos state is human induced.

Na Government dey make rain dey fall or flooding no dey happen for UK p, US and UAE? Three weeks ago over 120 Americans died in flood. Why don't you blame papa God? When environmentalists were warning about the effects of global warming and rising Sea levels since the 80's you and Trump thought it was a joke. Well, brace yourself because you haven't seen nothing yet.

What will government do in this case realistically speaking? That area is a low laying area with high water table, rivers that could get high, abi no be Ikorodu? Oga flooding will happen steadily.
Even in areas that flooding could be reduced by removing structures built on water channels, what has been the response from Nigerians whoes properties are affected, heavy outcry. We Nigerians area also difficult people to deal with, we will build on water channels, dump refuse to clog our drainage then cry when there is flooding. Government will act, they complain, they don't act, they complain.

Fake news

Tinubu built Lagos and nothing of such can happen there, this must be Anambra or Imo State, now he is busy building Nigeria

Tinubu the builder
If we will play opposition, this isnt the best way to. You can just be blaming an individual for everything happening. You and I know it's wrong , you just want to stirr the hornet's nest.

Land slides happens in the east, floods happens on farms and many more. Yes the government might have a role to play to help but it doesn't entire rest on the government. Lots of factors contributes to these floods.
While some floods can't be averted, some are just as a result of our carelessness and actions. We have seen roads undergoing construction and yet the drainage is full with dirts and plastics. That's not the government's doing . Is it?

We still build houses without proper drainage in this part of the world. Some people will even go as far as to block a canal so as to build a house on it.

Blaming Tinubu over this isn't just something opposition should use to score points. Doesn't make sense. We need better opposition than this

Flood is normal because Lagos is close to the ocean even developed country like USA and South Korea had it worse than Lagos state, the flood that happened in USA recently killed a lot of people even young children died, it also claimed lives in south Korea.
Correct, just last week parts of NYC were underwater and the underground subway system flooded out.

The damages will leave a bitter story in their lives. Things the government of the day should have channeled their energy on but they derived Joy in renaming useless streets.

The real problems here is totally different from how people wants to score cheap political goals or just pull someone down . It is a gradual collective result of corruption, ignorance, neglect and lackadaisical attitude of the physical and town planning authorities in various localities .

We just damn any future environmental consequences of any of our actions of the land. Most are only educted only to come back to take bribe .

Some people go to China or India import fake drugs , some people take bribes from them to allow such to pass and they don't get prosecuted, no when they are about to be prosecuted, their kinsmen rise up to declare that they are been persecuted unjustly .

Some other people come from a very far place in the north to get better living in a new areas only for them to soak whatever they are selling in the dirty and filthy gutters , some don't obey any rules again . They are arrested for prosecution only for their kinsmen to should marginalization.

The host themselves here in Lagos only has an avalanche of uneducated street uchins and louts who's just break into virgin lands with the criminal conspiracy of their educated dubious ones . Sell lands without recourse to the environmental implications and dangers associated to such recklessness. Selling lands in areas prone to water disaster and flooding and later seeing for government intervention. None adherence to NIMET warnings on weather conditions per season, yet the government is the problem.

What of those building in lekki ajah axis , they have money to build beautiful edifices but can go through proper channel to ensure they die due diligence in their land verification and employing professionals to help them handle such , yet itw the government.

It's high time we realize that our government is also limited in so many ways. In response to disaster, rescue etc the dis would have been done and the havoc would have been committed , we are only good at reactive management and not pre-emptive one.

So be guided and safe your life first.

That rainfall and flood in the north keeps surprising me.
I thought the north is a sunshine arena and dry-land.
dalass:
Flooding is a natural disaster. It happened in Dubai, America and even in any advanced country you can think of. Lagos is a coastal state, it is expected.

Flooding even occurs in part of the North where rainfall is not usually as heavy like in the south... It is an act of nature. So many erosion sites in the East all due to flooding.

It's not a scam, what it simply means it that, when you block the water channel, it will come and dwell with you instead of running away.
You can as well say that Snake no get Enemy. That it is only when you match it or encroach into it's territory that it bites you.

Since you are a lagosian, I am surprised that you cannot answer simple questions based on your claims about Lagos.

Or is it the threads about Lagos you read before you came up with this?

epainos:
I cannot buy a house I will live in Ikorodu, Mowe, and other parts many average Nigerians build homes. Rather, I will buy a flat in well structured area and share a compound with others. Sure, having a house in Ikorodu and other places like that will just be for having a structure sake which will serve other purposes. The rent is nothing, and I may keep the house empty for years till I get real use for it. And if the value shoots up such that I can fling the property to buy another in a better location, I will not hesitate to. Living in unstructured areas is a piece of headache. The citizens are the worst set of humans there.

Who are the innocent citizens? The ones who built houses on the drainage? grin

I don't know why some people can't understand simple things. You had asked me questions several times in the past which I didn't bother to answer and you keep asking more here. Growing up isn't that difficult na. Anyway, it's your business. Keep asking.

Find Lagos threads and get answers. If you cant do this....good luck!

Omo..I go cherish my area oo..flood can never come here.
Never say that again. Ever! A 6 hours only rainfall in Yenagoa, October 2022 nearly submerged every where and made those not affected scared. The intensity of rainfall can easily cause flooding overnight anywhere in the world. Even flooding mountainous areas like the floods have killed hundreds of people this year in the North with mountains, more deadlier than the areas below sea level like here in the South have ever experienced.

I am sure it is the Consequences of that coastal highway
You are not FD at from the truth. The coastal road and the land reclamation of the Atlantic Ocean for land use as seen at Eko Atlantic, banana island etc are major cause of these happenings. That is why environmental impact assessment is critically and necessary before embarking on such project. But here, everything is politics, corruption, etc
