😕😕😕
First of all, what is offshore work?

Is it ship that they use to go to offshore work?

Will the ship take the workers offshore and back to shore everyday?

Are you sure you know what a ship is?

What you earn shouldn't be posted, but the fact that your job revolve around the sea swimming test's highly required before any recruitment irrespective of profession. Who gave you that job?

This is more about telling people how much you earn or where you work, no adult needs any sort of advice from anyone to know what to do about this

You can always learn how to swim. Within 2 weeks, you'd get the basics.

By the way, N480k is really small for an offshore job considering the risk involved... that's less than $300.

Anyways, stay safe and keep your job till you secure a better one.

What are you scared of exactly? Is there something you are not telling us? If it's about swimming, learn how to swim!

People go offshore every day. You have an opportunity to learn and earn in a space many Nigerians wish they could.

How many times do you hear that offshore rigs caught fire? How many times do you hear that vessels capsized?

I have worked in the oil and gas, and I know for certain that it's a space that is strict with safety and security standards.

Please don't disgrace your (future) children and family. Go and do what men do; leave soft work for the females. Build a career in a space that is truly rewarding. If you are an engineer, you can build your career in that space and start earning millions in a few years.

If you do otherwise, you may come back to this comment years later and wish that you took my advice. Good luck!!

If you are aquaphobia, please consider quitting the job because no amount of salary can equate your life, and 480k is not huge enough to die on the offshore. Most of my course mates back then when we finished NYSC that got offshore jobs were earning a million plus for a two weeks in, two weeks out, and that's like almost a decade ago. I got similar offer later but never considered it cos I am aquaphobia.

Yes I applied for the job myself because we were just throwing our CVs everywhere as young Engineering graduates aiming to work in the oil sector, but when the job finally came and I realized it was offshore, I had to chicken out cos life is more precious than money for me.

So consider quiting if you are aquaphobia cos no amount of swimming class can change that.

But if you are not aquaphobia, then you can consider taking a swimming class to improve on your swimming ability in case of emergency. I wish you all the best.
Please stop this anythingphobia of a thing. People die even in their houses without taking a step outside. Only God protects from untimely death. Death strikes people anywhere, even in their houses. And you see people working offshore for many years, and nothing happens to them, that is to tell you only God saves, no be luck.

You know you're not telling the TRUTH here...
It's either you're fishing for information or you've been promised a job through the back door or a Contract Job by some Contractor and they asked you if you could swim and you said YES, knowing you can't swim...but like you've been schooled by somebody here you don't need to know how to swim to get an offshore job...what iscsimply required are some structured certification ( BOSIET etc) to help you, survive float and be assisted to rescue...you'd usually be trained given life jackets ( there are various types) and if you are working at inshore or jetty side you'd be given life vests.
Overall, it will be added advantage to your life generally if you learn to swim...period!

The pay is small for offshore job, the risk overweigh the pay but not a bad way to start considering the fact that there is no job anywhere , the government need to abolish the contract staff exploitative scheme going on

Back to your question, it’s not hard to learn how to swim, simply Learn please , you must learn to safe yourself in case of emergency though you can’t really swim offshore but you need it as a survival skill, then ensure you have your life jacket on at all time

This is a fellow seaman talking. You are definitely a Seaman, however, you have said it all......

Am a service vessel handler....

10thTenthMan:
You are working at and on which offshore location?

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM TO WORK OFFSHORE. I REPEAT THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM TO WORK OFFSHORE. IF YOU HAVE UNDERGONE THE BOSIET, OSP PROCESS, TSbB, etc YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS FACT. EVEN WHEN YOU ACCESS THROUGH HELI OR TbB IT IS NOT MANDATORY. HOWEVER, GENERALLY SPEAKING, IT IS A GOOD SURVIVAL SKILL TO HAVE THOUGH.

IF WE ARE TALKING NEARSHORE/SWAMP OPERATIONS, THEN I WOULD BE CONCERNED. GONE ARE THE DAYS OF SHELL SWIMMING TEST. AND BACK THEN IT WAS FRAUGHT WITH FRAUD AND THE TRAINERS SEEKING BRIBES IN CASH AND EVEN KIND (FROM WOMEN) TO PASS THE TEST TAKERS.

WHETHER 480K (BASIC CREW HAND/CONTRACT STAFF) OR UP TO 7-10 MILLION (OIM), YOUR SWIMMING SKILLS DO NOT PLAY ANY SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN OFFSHORE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY. THE BARRIERS AND HIERARCHIES OF CONTROL DO NOT CONSIDER SWIMMING SKILLS. OVER 80 PERCENT OF OFFSHORE WORKERS IN NIGERIA DO NOT KNOW JACK ABOUT SWIMMING. FROM AGBANI IN THE EAST, TO AGBAMI DOWN SOUTH, TO NOW DEAD AJE FIELD AT THE EXTREME WEST.

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED, AND YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR MIND TO REST, THEN DURING YOUR TIME OFF (7-14 DAYS DEPENDING ON YOUR ROTATION) JUST AND SIMPLY FIND A GOOD INSTRUCTOR AND LEARN THE LIFE SAVING SKILL.... SURVIVAL SWIMMING. IN LAGOS, BENIN/WARRI, YENAGOA/PHC, OR EKET (WHERE OFFSHORE OPS BASES ARE AND STAGING HAPPEN) YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FIND A GOOD INSTRUCTOR.
