Lawyer Gives NBC 30-day Ultimatum To Ban Bbnaija Or Face Legal Action by BlackViper(op): 1:54am On Aug 07, 2025
Maduabuchi Idam, a human rights lawyer, has demanded that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) either ban or impose strict regulations on Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), citing concerns over its “obscene, indecent, and profane content”.

In a letter recently shared on Facebook, Idam accused the show organisers of undermining public morality and questioned the NBC’s silence despite its history of censoring less explicit content in music videos.

The lawyer also expressed dismay over the show’s “unfiltered broadcast of explicit scenes,” which he argued are easily accessible to underage viewers despite its 18+ rating.

Concerned about the brazen obscenity and profane contents showcased by the television program described as “Big Brother Naija” which is also freely broadcasted on the social media by the host company, I am constrained as a Nigerian citizen and a public interest lawyer to write this letter demanding the immediate ban or proper regulation of the program in order to have same consumed exclusively by the target audience,” the post reads.

“The program which is currently on the second week of its 10th edition, has been characterised with the brazen exhibition of real-time obscene and pornographic actions, thereby questioning the position of the NBC regarding its regulatory mandate to such television broadcasts.

“…Therefore, it becomes perplexing to find that the NBC has remained mute or unconcerned in the face of the program, Big Brother Naija, despite its obvious explicit content.”

Idam, while acknowledging the show’s adult rating, argued that its widespread accessibility, both on television and social media, makes it a danger to public decency.

The lawyer also urged the NBC to enforce stricter measures to ensure the show is “exclusively reserved for its target audience,” preventing accidental exposure to minors or unwilling viewers.

“I write, not as one who is unaware of the fact that the program is rated 18 (which presupposes that the content is offered only for adults), but as a Nigerian who genuinely shares the concern of several other Nigerians about the danger that such a program poses to public decency and morality,” he added.

“Therefore, I demand that the NBC should (if not totally ban) adequately restrict the program, to be exclusively reserved for its target audience such that underage children or uninterested members of the public would not accidentally come in contact with it either on television or social media.”

The lawyer issued a 30-day ultimatum to the NBC, demanding that the show be restricted to “highly regulated adult-only platforms” and that its explicit content be barred from social media promotion.

“I am also outraged that the program is not only aired on national TV, but its profane content is also often proudly shared on the verified social media handles of the host company, in total disregard to public morality and decency,” he wrote.

“The regulation of the “Big Brother Naija” program which neither offers educative, artistic, scientific nor literary value has become necessary, in order to preserve and salvage the wreckage of our dear society, which is already challenged by several vices such as insecurity amongst others; being the aftermath of the unregulated social activities as the “Big Brother Naija” programs whose negative effect on the moral sensibilities of the Nigerian public cannot be underestimated.

“The NBC is by this letter urged to within thirty (30) days, regulate the “Big Brother Naija” program by permitting it only to be aired on highly restricted channels, reversed for its target audience and also prohibiting the sharing or decimination of the explicit contents by the host company, on social media.

“Take notice that in the event of failure to comply with the demand herein, I shall be constrained to seek necessary redress in the Court of competent jurisdiction.”

Idam’s petition follows recent controversies surrounding the show, particularly after housemates Kayikunmi and Isabella shared a steamy moment during a live broadcast.

The BBNaija Season 10 kicked off on July 28 with a two-day opening ceremony.

This year’s winner will take home a staggering N150 million, the highest grand prize in the show’s history since its debut in 2006.

I'm usually not a fan of “moral” crusades and other manifestations of moral posturing by hypocritical, “Holier than thou” Nigerians because I feel that there are far greater types of immorality confronting this country than whether or not the hemline of a young lady's skirt crosses her knees, or whether that dress she's wearing accentuates her curves or whether a young man has dreadlocks and is wearing ripped jeans.

I always find it amusing when religious leaders denounce "immoral dressing", then invite politicians to the pulpit to address congregations. These religious leaders act as if corruption, embezzlement and nepotism are not acts of gross immorality and politicians have not been the actual heavyweight champions of immorality in Nigeria right from the beginning. Think about it. Have we not been having greedy, incompetent politcal buffoons in Nigeria since 1960, long before anyone even knew what a mini skirt was?

But all the same, I still have an axe to grind with BBN simply because I believe the monetary reward system attached to it is obscenely inflated relative to what it projects. Imagine giving 150 million naira as a reward to someone for simply idling around, gossiping, eating, drinking, fornicating etc for 90 days.

Meanwhile a 1st class graduate will be lucky to get N100,000 during his graduation ceremony and many of them don't even get that much.

But na wah ohhh...

Is BBNaija not age-restricted? It is the responsibility of those paying GoTv and DSTv subscriptions to ensure that their minors don't get to view such content.

Dem no force anybody to watch the show, nah.

Other channels exist on both subscription platforms to watch. Activate parental guidance by following stated instructions.

Finito!

Na wah oh...it is well...

Multichoice has totally lost it. It seems they think they are operating in a society without values. Imagine a guy sucking a girl's boobs on national team. If I were president, I would've banned that show long ago.

It’s not a force to watch the program. Even me I don’t watch it. A program that’s generating funds and paying taxs. Even taking some Nigerians mind away from the pain and reality of this government.

So every year will keep talking about this program ban?

Dstv have child control. And Parent can restrict the content that’s allowed to be view. So it’s not a force everyone can watch it. Beside how many people is even subscribing to dstv and gotv? Because their viewers have reduced significantly.

Any body with smartphones in Nigeria have unrestricted access to so many contents. So what’s is bbnaija we are even talking about?

Great nations are populated by people of principles whether conservative or liberal, republican or democratic or green or whatever and they all have distinct views and opinions on various subject matters affecting the society.

I think we should develop these ways and have objective principles and not flip flop or fence sit.

So is the big brother show immoral or not. The show cannot be accepted for decadent scenery or should I say screenery but rejected for the reward system of such when it is clear both go together.

It is like the popular Nigerian saying concerning politics and governance in the eye of the electoral season storm where you often hear hapless Nigerians advising themselves to 'take the bribes but vote your conscience'. Showing how the lack of principles continue to weign down the citizens.

We should stand for something. For or against and not constantly strive to have our cake and eat it. Nature does not reward that.

I became uninterested in the show a long time ago and even avoid the threads here on nairaland.
Once, my young cousin came around and enjoyed the program. I had to ask my husband to put it on child safety or what it's called.

I look forward to a time when kids or teenagers or even adults are engaged in such reality TV shows but with acceptable contents and just rewards - such as educative contents (science, arts, humanities etc), sports, survival, cooking, singing/entertainment and so on.

Let the youth see a turn around and reorientation on the media and hopefully, we just might get this nation on the right trajectory.

Stupidity!!!

This is not shown on a national television

If you want to watch, it means you have to pay.

Holier than thou irritates me.

I have not set my eyes on the current episode and do not care about what is going on there.

If you know how much the promoters pay in fees to government, you would be shocked - fees and taxes running in millions, if not billions.

What NBC makes from BB Naija season is more than what they make from all the TV stations in a year
