BREAKING: Police Break Sowore’s Hand, Secretly Move Him To Undisclosed Location After Abuja Detention

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was secretly moved from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, where he had reported on Wednesday following an official invitation.

Sowore had accused the police of intimidation and abuse of power after being detained on Wednesday evening.

However, a source informed SaharaReporters on Thursday morning that the activist was covertly taken from the FID premises around 6 a.m. and moved to an undisclosed location.

“His location is unknown; a CSP (Chief Superintendent of Police) who works with Muyiwa Adejobi (Force spokesperson) came this morning and forcefully took him away from the FID office, where he was yesterday, after breaking his hand,” a source said.

His hand is currently broken because when the officer came this morning, he was ready to take him out of the cell without his clothes, but Sowore had to resist and said he wasn’t going to go out of the place without wearing his clothes.”

SaharaReporters reported on Wednesday that Sowore had arrived at the Force Headquarters in Abuja carrying a travel bag, as he honoured a controversial invitation from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit over a petition reportedly filed against him.

Sowore, who arrived at exactly 12:16 p.m., was accompanied by his lawyers, Barristers A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar, along with a crowd of supporters chanting anti-government and anti-Kayode Egbetokun songs.

His visibly packed travel bag contained personal essentials — including toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, clothing, books, and other items — a symbolic gesture suggesting he was prepared for possible detention.

Tensions escalated as members of the Take It Back Movement and other allied activist groups issued a two-hour ultimatum to the police to either release Sowore or face mass resistance.

Sowore had earlier rejected the police’s invitation, describing it as “defective and riddled with legal errors,” casting doubt on its validity.

The original allegation against him — “inciting disturbance,” a term not recognised under Nigerian law — was later replaced with “forgery and criminal defamation.”

In a post on his X handle on Wednesday, Sowore revealed that he was detained after honouring a police invitation. While in custody, he said he was served two petitions, which he claimed originated from what he described as the “illegal office of the IGP.”

He noted that the petitions were handed over by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akin Fakorede, a controversial former officer of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Sowore said the first petition accused him of forgery, while the second was reportedly filed by one Bukola Yemisi Kuti, whom sources said was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) due to her relationship with the Inspector General of Police.

The second petition accuses Sowore of "criminal defamation."

"The notorious former SARS officer, DCP Akin Fakorede presented two petitions to Sowore from the illegal IGP’s office, one alleged forgery and the second written by Bukola Yemisi Kuti, who was promoted to ACP because she’s mistress alleges ‘Criminal Defamation,’” he wrote on Wednesday.

Critics say the case reflects a pattern of state harassment against dissenting voices and further undermines public confidence in the rule of law

This is an Abuse of power, The IGP needs to come out and tell Nigerians the offense that Sowore committed that warrant this type of treatment from Police because I don't see any reason why you will invite Sowore for questioning and next thing is to break his hand.

Untrained, overzealous and compromised policemen in the force that always want to satisfy their politicians with their meagre pays.... because they are the ones with the barrels of the gun.

The tables will turn one day and they will protest...but will protest alone.

It's strange that Mr Femi Falana, SAN, was not his lawyer who accompanied him to the IG office.

The moment I read his report on the Police promotion, I knew that his allegation on the woman will land him in serious trouble if he's not able to prove it. The lady may be his nemesis wink It is a very serious matter.

If she's innocent and she doesn't fight till the end to clear her name, she, her family and children are done for.

Unlike most of Sowore's struggles against those in power, his case against the woman now looks like that of a Goliath against a David; he is now seen as the Goliath attempting to crush the woman with his political clout and platform.

Sowore better have incontrovertible evidence to prove his allegation. This case will be loud and long. That woman is the weakest part of his case. I believe he must have gotten his evidence before publishing his story and disclosing her full details on his media platform. Even his own wife and children will shudder at the thought of that woman being wrongly accused. He is officially in trouble.

The name of the woman and her personal data should have been withheld in the report if he had sought competent legal advice before publishing the story and that story would still have had impact.

Sowore is not serious about winning elections. This is the kind of things he enjoys - street activism. If he wants to win elections, he knows what to do. For now, he's just a jester.

BREAKING: Sowore Detained In Overcrowded Cell With Over 30 Sick Suspected Kidnappers, Fraudsters And Deadly Fulani Herdsmen

August 7, 2025
NEWS
BREAKING NEWS

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been reportedly detained in a crowded police cell with over 30 suspects, many of whom are allegedly ill and coughing, raising concerns about his safety and the motive behind his detention.

According to a senior police officer who spoke to SaharaReporters on Thursday, Sowore was thrown into the cell alongside suspected kidnappers and fraudsters on the direct orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The officer explained that the cell is congested and several of the suspects are visibly sick, some coughing persistently.

The source noted that Sowore was pushed in there deliberately.

The source stated that most of the detainees in the cell are Fulani herdsmen with extensive records of involvement in kidnapping.

Describing the condition of the cell as “one of the most terrible,” the officer noted that it appeared to be a deliberate act to detain Sowore there, as many of the inmates are reportedly ill.

"Today, Sowore was kept in a cell with Fulani herdsmen. About 30 of them are in there—others are suspected kidnappers and individuals accused of fraud. It’s a terrible cell. A lot of them are sick and coughing," the source told SaharaReporters.

Background

Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has faced repeated arrests and harassment over the years due to his activism and opposition to perceived state repression.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement has announced plans to picket state commands of the Nigeria Police Force across the country on Friday, to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Sowore.

This was made known on Thursday by TIB’s National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Sanyaolu, who said the protest will start by 9 am across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, wrote, “We will be occupying @PoliceNG state commands tomorrow. Join a barricade from your state. #FreeSowore #EgbetokunMustGo”

TIB described Sowore’s detention by the Nigeria Police Force under the authority of “illegal” Inspector General of Police Egbetokun as illegal, vengeful, and a gross abuse of power.

SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that Sowore by the police after honouring an invitation over ‘petitions’ filed against him.

Sowore, who voluntarily honoured the invitation, arrived at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, accompanied by his legal team —A.K. Musa, Marshal Abubakar — and several supporters.

Upon arrival, investigators reportedly stalled proceedings, claiming Sowore had to wait for the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) after the activist demanded to see the original copy of the petitions and declined to make a statement without it.

SaharaReporters also reported that at least eight police officers stormed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) at about 6 am on Thursday and forcibly moved Sowore to an undisclosed location.

It was learnt that the officers assaulted the activist and twisted his right hand, causing an injury, after he insisted on seeing his lawyers and collecting his clothes before being taken away.

Sowore earlier accused the police of intimidation and abuse of power and revealed that he was served two petitions while in custody, which he claimed originated from what he described as the “illegal office of the IGP.”

He noted that the petitions were handed over by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akin Fakorede, a controversial former officer of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Sowore said the first petition accused him of forgery, while the second was reportedly filed by one Bukola Yemisi Kuti, whom sources told SaharaReporters was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) due to her relationship with the Inspector General of Police.

The second petition accuses Sowore of "criminal defamation."

Sowore has faced repeated arrests and detentions by Nigerian security agencies in recent years, often in connection with his activism and public criticism of government policies.

You can break his hands but cannot break his spirit...

My only problem with Sowore is that, you cannot be fighting the bad government and be fighting the opposition at the same time...

That will not take you anywhere

The top police are happy about the state of the nation. They love not to disturb Tinubu because he is bribing them with huge money to keep quiet and support him. It's the small small officers that the reform will help, but their bosses at the top are muted with T stolen Money.
