Kemi Badenoch reveals how she lost her faith in God

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has revealed she lost her belief in God after being deeply disturbed by the case of Austrian sex offender Josef Fritzl.

In an interview with the BBC, Badenoch said that although she grew up "never that religious," she once considered herself a Christian apologist who believed in God. But her faith was shaken in 2008 after reading about Fritzl, who imprisoned and repeatedly raped his daughter Elisabeth in a cellar for 24 years.

“I couldn’t stop reading this story,” she said. “I read her account, how she prayed every day to be rescued. And I thought, I was praying for all sorts of stupid things… and I was getting my prayers answered. It’s like, why were those prayers answered and not this woman’s prayers? And it just— it was like someone blew out a candle.”

Despite what she called a rejection of God, Badenoch emphasised that she has not rejected Christianity altogether. “I remain a cultural Christian,” she explained, adding that she values the Christian foundations of British society. “I want to protect certain things because I think the world that we have in the UK is very much built on many Christian values.”

Badenoch’s maternal grandfather was a Methodist minister. Her full interview, where she also discusses leadership, values, and mental health in young people, is set to be broadcast on Thursday evening.

Badenoch has previously spoken up in defence of religious freedom. In 2024, she strongly supported Scottish politician Kate Forbes’ right to express her Christian views on social issues, despite disagreeing with her on same-sex marriage.

“If you’re asking me to condemn someone for their religious views, you’ve misunderstood the role of a Minister for Equality,” she said at the time, praising Forbes’ honesty.

Although not religious herself, Badenoch added: “I understand what it means to people and how they live their lives. Stopping people from saying what they really feel is overly draconian.”

The very countries they all like to rush to. USA, France, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden.
Most of Europe essentially. All countries with Christian heritage. Tells you something of the quality of following Christ.

So if someone says he/she gives up on faith because of injustice that shows he/she doesn't have faith in the first place!

Well, that they are referred to as Christian values does not mean much. So long as those values are ever changing, they are not rigid enough for anything tangible to be founded upon them.

Christian values have remained ever inconsistent over the many centuries; it has changed with the times, politics and geography as well. However, the values in those countries mentioned have remained a lot more consistent over time. Clearly, it couldn't be your ever changing Christian values responsible.

It took 1700 years for Christians to outrightly condemn slavery and even then it took a war against Christians to end it definitely. Whatever values you think Christianity has is inspite of its roots not because of it.

That is exactly my point. Christianity at its root does not condemn slavery, that's why it took 1700 years for Christians to be willing to end it and it was still Christians who opposed the ending of slavery.

Slavery came before Christianity, so if Christianity was able to abolish it after 1700 years just like you admitted ... then Christianity wield a strong positive influence not just spiritually but socially, economically.

Japan abolished slavery 500years before the British abolishionists arose. Christianity is not what was necessary to abolish slavery. Left to Christians at the time you would have been enslaved.

No! Christianity didn't stop slavery rather politicians who initiated it just rebranded it only God's Kingdom will end it when everybody will earn the same amount globally!

RealityKings1 is acting deliberately obtuse because it is indefensible. Christians defended slavery to the death.

In the first place she was never in Christ she can't loose faith if she knew what Jesus preached and taught about God's Kingdom where injustice will be squashed for good so let her listen to the good news of God's Kingdom then she will choose between human government and God's Kingdom!
