[quote author=Freshtruth post=136354800]My salary is 480k per month in an offshore job but I can't swim I need advise My brother face your work. I worked offshore in Qua Iboe Termimal (QIT) Ibeno for over 10 years. I didn't know how to swim..I still don't. What you need to learn is water survival skills. The use of life vest, life rafts, buoys, rings etc to stay afloat in water in the case of an emergency. Let's agree you even know how to swim and an emergency occurs, where do you swim to? From your platform offshore to the nearest safe one is over 4000 or more metres! So how do you swim that? Learn how to dorn your life vest and all and you're good to go. Stay safe. |

It’s a normal thing . Working in marine company doesn’t require you much know how to swim . There are ship captains that doesn’t know how to swim. Only requirements is safety procedures around the life jackets , Evacuation plans and Fire incidents only |

Freshtruth:Its good you know how to swim. That's is why one of the requirements for you to able eligible to work offshore is a licence called the SAS (SURVIVAL AT SEA) or HUET (HELICOPTER UNDER WATER ESCAPE TRAINING). So are you saying you dont have either of these licences? To obtain the licence you must be trained. Once you are trained you are good to go. However, what the training provides is simply basic swimming technique which you will need ro build on. But above all these if the platform you are working is not owned by one Shakiru and sons or Mrrs Ejike & Bros Nig Ltd, then they should have provisions put in place for you to take care of emergency situations. Once you are at the location and there is an emergency, all you need is to get to your allocated muster point. From there, the platform specific evaluation plan will be shared by the Muster Coordinator or your OIM. That evacuation plan includes you finding your way to specialised life raft already placed close to your very muster point. Sit there and tighten your gears as instructed. While the life raft is automatically ejected into the sea far away from danger. You will be in this life raft till help comes via a bigger boat or a chopper. I guess where you should be concerned is, if there is a crisis mid air while you are in the chopper. In that case, you should already be geared with your life vest which will keep you afloat in the water till help comes. Either way, I believe if you are calm you will.be fine.. Baba, you want resign wetin. You are not serious. Will you say because road accident is common, you wont travel by road? Wake up. Just last week, 5 students of Uniport last their lives when the campus shuttle they were in, collided with a stationary truck. Meanwhile thousands of people travelled from north to south, some for 2-3 days on the road, yet nothing happened to them. Be bold Face life What will be will be. |

Freshtruth:480k per month? you must be either a cleaner, a caterer or an intern to be earning that amount. I however believe that you're just here to seek attention. |

Freshtruth:Who told you that you must know how to swim? Abeg relax. Just know how to wear your vest and make sure it isn't expired, your whistle should be intact. In fact just take your drills serious especially emergency evacuation drills. That's all.. As for me, I know those ones die incase of any emergency, NAA me go just wear my vest and every necessary clothing jump inside the water sec and start blowing my whistle anyhow till help comes😀. Naa you dey there dey overthink am |

There's a mass of water you can't test even if you're the best swimmer, if you work in a place like the image you used in this post, just pray nothing goes wrong or pray if anything happens help gets to you in an hour or less or you either die by cold, current drifts you beyond help and worse you turn to fish food. Life is a risk in itself, in all you do just have death at the back of your mind. |
