I think the police force or service should be called to order. |

ravensckar:More power to you and I can relate well. I used their institutions to fight them most times but what I needed clarifications on is how Sowore could keep posting and alleging amorous affairs on the IGP, Is this not without consequences? Yes, it is defamation n provable in court but Why do it when it is an illegal act ? IGP uses his power, Sowore uses it! This is breakdown of law and order |

flexyrule:You were probably not born when Sowore started his activism in the university, rejecting monies and bribes. I just wonder why ignorant people like you keep on hammering on grants, grants, grants, up and down. The one-off grant Sowore got long time ago, was to support his then start-up journalism business now known as Sahara Reporters. He applied for the grant, merited it and got it! Lazy man,go and apply for your own grant na and see if it's that easy to get foreign grants without meriting it. By the way, what is even wrong in getting financial support for journalism/human rights activism? Can you do activism/journalism without funds to investigate issues, compensate workers and supporters, travel and mobilize people? Nonsense! |

I don't believe sh*t of what the undercover government agent is saying. The guy is most likely in one hotel chilling out while raising dust amongst Nigerians to continue to pull the wool over their eyes. |

Vulcan24:Let me give you a breakdown of what is going on; The tenure of the IGP is governed by the Constitution and the Police Act. The enactment of the Police Act in 2020. Section 7 (3) of the Police Act provides that the IGP shall be appointed by the President on the advice of the Police Council from among serving members of the Police Force. This provision is a restatement of section 215 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution. Under section 7(6) of the Act, the IGP is given a 4-year tenure. During the deliberations of the police bill in the 9th National Assembly, the consensus revolved around appointing a person to the office of the IGP for a 4-year term subject to his not exceeding 35 years in the police force or attaining 60 years of age whichever is earlier. This is captured in section 18 ( which says that: “Every police officer, shall on recruitment or appointment, serve in the Nigerian Police Force for a period of 35 years or until he attains the age of 60 years, whichever is earlier.”When Kayode Egbetokun was first appointed IGP on June 19, 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his tenure was set to conclude on September 4, 2024, upon his attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, just before his retirement, the President sent a bill to the National Assembly, seeking the amendment of section 18 ( of the Police Act by inserting a new provision which states that “Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-section ( of this section, any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of Section 7(6) of this Act.”The amendment was passed by the National Assembly in July 2024, thereby providing the legal basis for retroactively appointing Egbetokun to a four-year tenure which was to commence in June 2023 and terminate in October 2027 – few months after the general elections of that year. I believe even a person with half a brain cell will understand why SOWORE is protesting against the IGP's continued stay in office. There's this saying that; "The only recipe that is necessary for the rise of evil is for the good men to say or do nothing". #Free_Sowore |

ravensckar:I do agree with you on the importance of activists ... the risks they take to expose the authorities and keep them in check for the good of the masses. I also agree with you that there are basically wayyyy too many cowards and mental slaves within the masses. Instead of supporting the one standing up to make our lives better we are condemning him. It must be suffer and smile is in our DNA. On the above .... this is what I expect from citizens like you who have the status to openly confront and check those in authority who abuse their power. What I don't like about your actions is that you did not follow through to have those involved fired and charged. I'm almost sure they are still out there doing what they do. Things will never improve with sooo many cowards .... citizens who are even afraid to video Police when they abuse their authority... but quick to complain to each other as if that will bring about change. Cowards everywhere and that's the root of our problems. |

Originalsly:You're right about the follow up part. However, one of the things parenting (in Africa) teaches one is that whenever one takes two steps forward, one should endeavour to take a step backward as well. Whilst fighting and campaigning for a better country, one shouldn't forget one's loved ones. They will bear the greatest suffering in one's absence. I can remember during the #ENDSARS saga, my wife called my parents to report my involvement. My parents kept calling me to shout at me. My mum said she'll kill herself if I put myself in harm's way. My dad said I should sha remember that he has lots of other children. It's my own children that he's feeling sorry for. I nearly choked with laughter. ![]() It was at that moment it dawned on me how much sacrifice these activists bear. They are defying all odds to fight for a better Nigeria. No matter what they are gaining from it, no matter what their end game is, the fact that they have the courage to look those oppressors in the eyes and confront them is admirable. The least we could do is to encourage them and show our solidarity. Political consciousness and activism must never be eradicated in our society lest we'll be at the mercy of the oppressors. #Free_Sowore |

Rindo69:Since Sowore has such utter contempt for the law, as evidenced by the way he shouts and wrestles with police officers at every opportunity, he would be an absolute tyrant if he ever got himself rigged into power as even a local government dog-catcher, talk less president of Nigeria. Let him rot away quietly in his jail cell and waste all his donated money on legal fees. The man is a glutton for attention, and now he should be forgotten where he is behind bars, so he can enjoy the attention of the warder there, while eating watery cockroach-infested beans and delivering his lame speeches to the rats that visit him there. |

Which one is life threatening in police custody? If you chose activist as a career you and prison and police will be a very close friend and a regular customer for sure. |

Jakumo:Yele may be the attention glutton you accuse him of being but frankly there are so many protestable issues in Nigeria and waaayyyyy toooooo many cowardly, docile and submissive Nigerians. Even those who speak up often suffer from what one of my colleagues beatifully called "outrage fatigue." Therefore methinks its better to encourage the few who still stand up against our chronically bad government, than discourage them. In truth, this country is due for ten thousand revolutions. The things we let slide are lamentable. |
