Onitsha Port Welcomes First Barge Of 2025 Season by Borrow2222(op): 12:54pm On Aug 09, 2025
The Onitsha Port in Anambra State was abuzz with excitement early this month as the first barge for the 2025 season, MV ZUPITOR/MV RB ALASKA, berthed at the port.

The General Manager of Universal Elysium Limited, the concessionaire of the port, Mr Chris Mbonu, expressed his enthusiasm, describing the berthing of the barge as a positive milestone and a reminder of the pressing infrastructural gap.

Mbonu explained that operations at the port were ongoing but largely seasonal, with activity peaking only during the rainy season when the River Niger’s water level rises sufficiently to allow vessel movement.

He attributed the seasonal operation to the inconsistency of dredging and channel management of the River Niger, rather than a lack of infrastructure or demand.
“The port is functional and ready to work 365 days a year. But without consistent dredging of the River Niger, we are forced to operate only when the waterway allows us—essentially turning a national asset into a seasonal stopgap,” Mbonu said.

He likened a port without a navigable waterway to a car without fuel, adding that the current situation limits the port’s capacity to serve as a true inland logistics hub for Nigeria’s growing domestic and international trade. Mbonu appealed to the federal government, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, and private stakeholders to make regular dredging and maintenance of the River Niger a national economic priority.

Regular dredging of the River Niger, according to Mbonu, would unlock year-round navigability, enabling barges, ferries, and larger vessels to move seamlessly between the southern seaports and the inland commercial centers. This would lower transportation and logistics costs, ease congestion on critical highways, reduce delivery timeframes and business inefficiencies, and increase investor confidence in inland logistics.

The concessionaire also highlighted the potential impact on agriculture, tourism, and recreation, including helping farmers and aggregators move produce quickly and efficiently, encouraging investment in industrial and logistics infrastructure, promoting export trade, and supporting outbound movement of raw materials and agro-commodities via coastal ports.

With proper dredging of the River Niger, Onitsha River Port could transform into a year-round, multimodal commercial hub, impacting several sectors and driving economic growth. Mbonu emphasized that the infrastructure is in place, the demand is evident, and the benefits are far-reaching; what is required now is government consistency and strategic investment to make inland waterway transport a pillar of Nigeria’s economic growth.

While the vision for Onitsha River Port is promising, proper dredging alone won’t guarantee a year-round, thriving commercial hub. Inland waterway transport in Nigeria has long faced challenges beyond infrastructure—such as inconsistent policy implementation, bureaucratic bottlenecks, security concerns along river routes, and inadequate integration with road and rail networks.

Yes, the demand exists, but without a coordinated approach that addresses these systemic issues, the port risks becoming an underutilized asset like several other government-led projects. Instead of focusing solely on dredging and physical infrastructure, the priority should be building a sustainable operational framework—clear regulations, private sector incentives, and security guarantees—that ensures the port’s long-term viability and competitiveness.

Chai, this Onitsha Port matter na like person wey get fine big pot of soup but no firewood to cook am — as Igbo go talk, ewu nwuru n’oba ji, ọ bu kwa ihe ojoo (goat wey die inside barn full of yam, na bad luck be that).

Infrastructure dey, demand dey, but without regular dredging, the River Niger just dey behave like stubborn landlord wey open gate only during rainy season.

If government fit make dredging a steady habit, this port no go just be seasonal photo-op; e go turn to full-time money-making machine wey fit decongest our roads, boost trade, and even make farmers smile reach ear.

Did I just see or hear Onitsha Port? So, where now is the landlockedness of the SE, a farce that has been peddled for far too long by Rhino O'Monkey due to his hatred for the region?
Re: Onitsha Port Welcomes First Barge Of 2025 Season by greenermodels: 1:53pm On Aug 09, 2025
All the eastern ports especially Onitsha are very economically viable but poor governance and backward politics wouldn't allow them to thrive,we still have a long way to go in this country but who's the leader to lead us on that journey?
Re: Onitsha Port Welcomes First Barge Of 2025 Season by Dreal1247: 1:53pm On Aug 09, 2025
The gospel truth is that the major problem facing the South Eastern part of Nigeria is the insensitivity of some miscreants from the region. Some of them are more destructive than the Fulani herdsmen. And are hiding behind Fulani herdsmen to cause damage to the people of the region.
The Port is a welcome development, but it will be more beautiful when they have a favourable and conducive environment for maximum performance and results

Courtesy of the stereotyped APC government isn't it?
Vote for APC come 2027 and the dredging will be guaranteed.

Those who want Igbos to go back to the east should tell the federal government to put more effort into this project.

It will help make Igbos stay in the East and allow Yorubas to have their Lagos in peace.

If otherwise is the case it means... They dislike Igbos but ironically love the revenue they get from them

Yoruba this and Yoruba that. Yorubas send you people how? Do you even know one Yoruba person well to understand how we think and what matters to us?

We aren't tagged sophisticated and progressive for nothing. If we are the most exemplary enablers of others in our land, arguably to our own detriment, how does it make sense we resent the success or progress of others in their land?

Lol, first barge in 2025 is coming in August. Nigeria and Nigerians are a special specie who knows what is right but will never do it. over 10years after this port was commissioned by Jonathan, the APC gang has not allowed it to breath

The Ronus want them to go back to the East but will never relinquish their money flowing through Apapa port or Lagos International airport. They will rather see Nigeria go down than decongest Apapa port and decentralise the inflow of cargo and passengers from Lagos to other regions

Who are even the ijaw as a tribe? Even the bayelsa they have many non ijaw clans and igbo clans

Ijaw is a political making you can't call a bonny man, Otueke man or even ilaje man an ijaw or even Pessu man an ijaw ... Maybe Patani will agree but okirika said they aren't ijaw

they have no choice than to allow it...it's an international water cabotage law...not allowing it is prerequisite to anarchy and chaos

https://punchng.com/onitsha-port-welcomes-first-barge-of-2025-season/
The statement in bold is the reality they don't tell the uninformed ones from the Southeast.

So FG will keep pouring billions into regular dredging regularly when there are alternative ports and rail networks to deliver goods from the ports at cheaper costs? That doesn't make any business sense.

This is why the private sector has never seen the business sense in having any port in the landlocked Southeast.

Nobody will throw money down the sink to build a port for billions and continue dredging it with billions at regular times when there are even seaports and dry inland ports.

Please stop the propaganda. There’s no profitable business case for it just because regular dredging is required and many ecosystems will be destroyed along with potential flooding disasters.

You don't need to go far to get an answer,it is simply the Nigerian factor and the lack of political will to see it succeed.

You are already convulsing. Tell me the insensitivity you are referring to here that is different from the insensitivity of every Nigerian leaders across the country? Tell me the regions today that is better than the East, I mean region so don't mention Lagos. Tell me whose insensitivity is causing the congestions at Apapa port?

You are already looking for reasons to hide your hate for any good news from the East
