Polchiz:Well with the cost of living in Australia its getting out of control here. Most western people can't afford home anymore and average price of house is nearly 1 million dollars. And, yes wages have gone up slightly but not afford to keep up with the cost of living, taxes are way too high in Australia, and housing and rents have gone up. For example, if you make 70k after that's about 59k after tax. Sure that seems like a lot of money to you, buts not in developed world. Here's my current living situation, I'm currently share housing with 5 different guys to save on rent alone. Your average white men living in the west isn't rich like you think they are. The only difference is the Western Money dollar is stronger then the African money on average. That's why. You think they are rich. Your average white person is living pay check to pay check and will not have enough money saved for retirement. Majority of the population is put into aged care homes or centres for old people. Nigeria as so much potential. You guys have been brainwashed to believe the west is the place to be. Sure in terms of making money it is but in terms of culture or people its not. It's actually very lonely living in the Western world for me. Source: I'm a white man myself oybio sorry if that's spelled wrong lol. |

AI Overview +1 In Nigeria, the largest percentage of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector, followed by the services sector. Specifically, agriculture employs a significant portion of the population, often exceeding 30% of the total workforce. Just because you live in a city doesn’t mean the entire country does. cucumbar: |

I know how P&L works They make more than 10k. 10k is the baseline Don’t forget P in this case also included the free food from your business, which a lot of people underrate but the majority of the average Nigerian spends significantly on feeding Polchiz: |

I said this some months ago that I'm yet to see an indeginous company in Nigeria that pays their staff up to 1m, and I received a trailer load of mentions. Suddenly everybody knew tonns of people who earn more than a million. Even during my 9am - 5pm days it would take you about a decade's worth of experience before your basic salary crosses the 500k benchmark, let alone 1m.That's just the sad reality. If everyone is earning that much, why do people complain each day about hardship? If you apply for a job in Lagos today. The highest rate any company can start with you is 300k. Most would even tell you 150-200k. This is because they spend more trying to sustain their business. No thanks to our unstable economy. If you carry out a random research on people between the ages of 25-35 on nairaland who do 9am to 5pm jobs, I can assure you that less than 10% of them earn above 500k. A vast majority of people between the ages of 25-35 who earn a million and above every month are mostly freelancers who earn in dollars. It's almost impossible for an indigenous company to pay you such an amount. Most especially if their customer base are Nigerians as well. Cc GloriousGbola, pocohantas, Karleb, folake4u... |

Nazgul:This post doesn't dispute the arguments that day and if I remember right, people mentioned some company names that pay much at starting. A tiny percentage earn well, they are truly not the majority and no one will ever say they are. Two truths can coexist, Naz. |

pocohantas:My argument was on indigenous companies. But sadly, people kept mentioning non indigenous companies and even the non indigenous companies they mentioned are few and extremely difficult to gain employment into. My roommate in school got employed in chevron after NYSC. Chevron pays close to a million for a start. But I can't bring such into an argument cos less than 1% of Nigerian graduates who completed their NYSC that year would be fortunate to experience such. If UN says 80% of Nigerians don't have access to clean water, you might easily counter such report and call it lies cos you have a borehole in your place and treat it regularly, but Nigeria has 36 states. How about those in other states, rural communities and all, do they gave access to clean water? My submission is that any evidence that doesn't make up at least 40% of the topic at hand shouldn't be brought into an argument or even referred to as A Truth . If at least 40% of job seekers across Nigeria cannot easily gain employment in companies that pay above 500k for a start, it means these companies are technically non-existent. Cos what's the point of bringing the extremely few who do into an argument when the vast majority (including the people who mentioned them) don't have the privilege of working there. Doesn't it surprise you that the world regards Nigeria as a poor country even though we can boast of the richest man in Africa being from Nigeria. The reason is because more than 80% of her populace are poor so the remaining % regardless of how rich they are - are irrelevant. That's the point I'm trying to make. |

Yankee101:My point is that majority of Nigerian traders cannot boast of 10k profit daily. 10k profit daily amounts to about ₦300k monthly and 3.6m annually. I am not saying the money is much but sincerely, many average traders in Nigeria don't earn that much. And again, business is seasonal, you can make ₦15k today and then 5k the next day. Some days you may borrow money to feed. |

Nazgul:It's okay to say you don't know. When I was interning at GO54, a contract staff that was hired to help out the senior backend developer earned 300k. The same engineering department had other members like the CTO, this senior backend guy and others. Seplat pays USD2k to graduate trainees. When I was doing access bank graduate trainee test, we were told the pay was close to 300k, I think 267k or something and they also give a car after a year or so. How much do you those who have been climbing the career ladder would earn? |

| Re: Only 8% of Nigerians Earn Above ₦250,000 - Ibrahim Suleiman by Eazie351(m): 9:45am On Aug 10, 2025 |
I want to assume the 250,000 is pegged as monthly income. If so, my honest answer may quite depend on the knowledge of the earnings whether on Net income or gross income. For net income, the percentage is faaaaar lower (I'd say less than 2%). This is because, after all deductions; *transportation (for govt and private sector workers) *cost of production and expenses (for traders and other jobs like commercial cars and motorcycles) must have been made from the total income, very much less than 2% of people will have 250k in their pockets as profit at the end of the month. But if it is gross income, haba! An average person would rake in 250k per month but at the end of the day, the profit might not be up to 80k. How many civil servants and private sector workers earn up to 250k per month sef? Have you seen these people's salary scale? Should we factor the unemployed too? My take |

Okada riders have to pay for petrol and other maintenance costs. And when you include monthly or daily depreciation expense (the cost of the motorcycle itself has to be broken down into a monthly or daily expense), you would realize that they earn a lot less. Softmirror: |

79733139:Oga as far back as 2010 Okada riders average #4,000, #5,000, #3,000 daily which is net and not gross. Net meaning after all the deductions you mentioned up there. Now in 2025 do your research an Okada rider nets an averages #12,000 to #15,000 take home.

TheAnimeEnjoyer:Definition of a choice is not the nature of what something is; it’s the priority or value that one places over individual unique situations or something that’s defines choice. Nigeria or anywhere else in the world has its unique nature and characteristics, where Nigeria may be filled with beautiful cultures and social experiences but miss on fair financial system ; UK for instance may offer no such freedom but may offer financial advantages. Now, choosing ones preference depends on which of these offers does one prioritize the most or will one find the most attractive. So, in your own case, many Nigerians choose a working system over culture while you ironically don’t prioritize such but prefer beautiful cultures and cannot afford to sacrifice it for anything else. My conclusion is it’s the best to have a taste of everything. This is what means to live a fulfilled life. Having a taste of everything in life will offer you this fulfilling experience that you didn’t take decisions based on unfair circumstances but based on true and genuine reasons. |

Boomyvig:To be fair. I would live in Nigeria if I owned property and lived off of rental income and passive income. So, I don't have to depend on the job market and local economy. Plus if you have 5 homes paid off it's pretty well off in Nigeria. |

TheAnimeEnjoyer:Have you had the taste of both worlds ? Before you conclude , ensure you have. For someone like myself, it will be a terrible disservice to me to decide that the West is the best place that supports my dream when I have no idea of what it means to live there. Taking such decision based only on my partial experience about Nigeria will not help my chances at life in anyway. |
