Why Southeast (igbo Region) Is Developing Rapidly: Key Factors by ariesbull(op): 8:03am On Aug 10, 2025
HDI Rankings: Southeast States vs. National

According to Radboud University’s 2023 data (based on 2022 data), the HDI scores are:

Lagos: 0.721 (Highest, Southwest)

Anambra: 0.706

Imo: 0.693

Abia: 0.674

Enugu: 0.667

Ebonyi: 0.622

National average: ~0.560

This means 4 of the 5 Southeast states—Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Enugu—rank prominently in the top 10 of all Nigerian states by HDI. Ebonyi also performs relatively well, positioning the Southeast zone strongly overall.

Global Data Lab also reflects similar patterns for 2022:

Abia: 0.622

Anambra: 0.674

Ebonyi: 0.706

Enugu: 0.667

Imo: 0.683

1. Education & Human Capital

High literacy rates and strong educational institutions are prevalent. For example, Imo consistently ranks near the top in literacy and educational attainment.

2. Industrial Clusters & Entrepreneurship

The region hosts vibrant industrial clusters, including:

Onitsha (plastics)

Aba (garments and leather)

Nnewi (automotive)

Abakaliki (agro-allied products)

These small and medium enterprises bolster local economies and employment, demonstrating remarkable resilience and innovation.

3. Urbanization & Commerce

Anambra boasts one of Nigeria’s most urbanized populations, with major commercial hubs like Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka forming a dynamic industrial axis.

4. Natural Resources & Economic Diversity

The Southeast is endowed with oil and gas, along with solid minerals like bauxite, coal, iron ore, and more.

Economies here are diversified—agriculture, trade, real estate, manufacturing, hospitality, and more contribute to development.

5. Cultural & Historical Resilience

The entrepreneurial culture of the Igbo, alongside historical experience with trade and commerce, fuels economic activity.

Some observers argue that colonial-era infrastructure investments favored coastal (southern) regions, facilitating long-term economic advantages.

Another cultural perspective from local users highlights creative resilience:

> “When given the choice, they do seem to go for development moving North than South. ... I would argue it is more cultural.”

Summary: Why the Southeast Is Standing Out in HDI

Factor Southeast (Igbo Region) Highlights

Thank you so much for breaking it down, 99.99% of Nigerians see only option 3 as the only benchmark for development . That's why you can have a fully functional city like Lagos be run down by MColuomo, touts, riff Raffs, urchins and brigands

Spirit of Behemoth and Leviathan have taken over their youth and fulani youths. It will take a higher being to cast out the spirit that lungs for blood in them.

We love our Lagos like that. Mind your SE region, and let us mind our SW region.

You can compare yourselves with Jos or Port Harcourt. The SW and SE do not even share a border.

Nice one. No other African tribe can achieve mass prosperity the way China pulled 450 million people out of poverty within 10 years.

Only Igbos can do it, through job creation, industrialization and international trading, we will build a society with 75% middle class and 25% rich class. No more poverty in Igboland.

In 15 years, the SE will be the most developed part of Africa. Every man woman and child is committed to development right now. Everyone is thinking of how they will add their imprint.

Take the cities we know, and consider that there are at least 12 emerging cities in the region as we speak.

Regarding the bolded, even if you had said....."all these things are working together to reset naive and stubborn Igbo brain", you wouldn't be far off from the truth!

There's a need to replicate the geometric power model in other SE states to ensure adequate electricity. The Aba power model bypasses the national grid to supply power direct to it's catchment enclave.

The national grid had never worked, will never work even in the next 50 years. The earlier we recognize this the better for us in the SE.

In the absence of a steady, reliable power, no significant economic breakthrough will happen in the SE

you are 100% correct. unfortunately this type of external pressure is the only thing that gets us to think straight. If not for it we would have invested all our money everywhere but home
