Lagos Orders Compulsory Inspection Of E-hailing Vehicles by iwaeda(op): 6:02pm On Aug 10, 2025
The Lagos State Government has mandated e-hailing operators to present their vehicles for inspection to enhance safety, improve service quality, and ensure regulatory compliance across the transportation sector.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Osiyemi stated that the ministry had observed the deplorable condition of some vehicles licensed to operate under e-hailing platforms within the state.
“This has necessitated a comprehensive audit of all vehicles to be used,” he said.

According to Osiyemi, any vehicle found unsuitable will not be allowed to operate on Lagos roads.
He decried the growing safety concerns for motorists and the poor service delivery by some operators, stressing that the state government was committed to safeguarding lives and property.

He added that the state would not tolerate practices that put its residents at risk.
“The lack of robust databases among many e-hailing platforms makes it difficult to track discrepancies and criminal activities perpetrated through their services.

“The ministry will not hesitate to enforce sanctions where necessary,” he added.
He quoted the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Olawale Musa, as saying that all drivers must be duly registered and certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute.

He urged operators to comply or risk having their licenses suspended.
Musa noted that such practices of unregistered vehicles hinder effective tracking and pose significant security risks, which will not be tolerated
According to him, the ministry will strictly enforce penalties for any infractions.

He said the digital system developed by the ministry requires up-to-date data to enable effective regulation of the transportation sector.
He urged residents to stop booking e-hailing rides offline to avoid bypassing the safety features and accountability mechanisms built into the apps.

if the inspection does not require money or settlement then it may be a good idea but if it requires money then this is just nonsense...

Talking about Vehicle safety...When we have danfo buses.

The danfo bus below has no hazard lights, No trafficator light, No side Mirror, Dangerous metal body, Wooden seats attached to metals that can rip your cloths off.

Yet the government is saying that e-hailing cars needs inspection, whereas the e-hailing companies actually have standards and run their own comprehensive inspections before enlisting you on their platform.

People, be the judge! Between the 2 vehicles below, which one needs to be inspected for safety?

Nigeria has a problem. Why do we often make policies based on selfish gain.

What happened to the yearly inspection at VIO? Is that not enough inspection to know if a vehicle is road worthy?

If the interior of a hailed ride is dirty, it is upto the customer to cancel the ride.. simple.

Why do we like to duplicate efforts and policies.

What is wrong with us?

I am tired.

Same duplication of efforts in all sectors:
Customs has releasing officer, CIU. Strike force,FOU, Valuation, Marine police, Compliance all chasing after one container.. Haba!!!

Police , VIO, FRSC all on the same road chasing motorists, but they all turn a blind eye to danfo.

That is good for the system
We've always advocated for secured transport system in Nigeria

However, what is the real problem here...?
Osiyemi stated that the ministry had observed the deplorable condition of some vehicles licensed to operate under e-hailing platforms within the state.
“This has necessitated a comprehensive audit of all vehicles to be used,” he said.

This is not true, coz comparatively, the service state of e-hailing vehicles are always on point compared to commercial buses.

But I thought the road worthiness test and inspection is meant to check this same issues? So after going for the road worthiness certificate test, they will still have to go for this particular test again?

present their vehicles for inspection to enhance safety, improve service quality, and ensure regulatory compliance across the transportation sector
have they done it for danfor buses or is the government saying that danfo buses are safe, providing improved service quality and are in compliance with transportation sector regulations?

With the number of ramshackle buses held together with "spit and tape", plying the roads of that smelly state, a reasonable government would have started from that low hanging fruit.

However, Sanwo isn't a sensible governor

This country is becoming like Britain they want to loot and take profits as much as they can, but unlike britain, we are not seeing positive results from taxes, they just take all the taxes to enrich themselves. To inspect the vechicles means the drivers have to pay.
