Man’s Body Remains Unburied for 5 Years as Wives and Children Battle Over Property

A disturbing story shared on social media has reignited conversations around the dangers of polygamy in Nigeria.

A Nigerian woman, identified on X (formerly Twitter) as @Anambra_girl, revealed that her friend’s late father has remained unburied for almost five years due to an ongoing feud between his two wives and their children over the distribution of his property. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to her, the man had been married to two wives before his passing. Since his death, both women and their respective children have been locked in a bitter fight over who gets what, making it impossible to agree on burial arrangements.

“You see polygamy? Avoid it if you can. My family friend’s dad died almost five years ago and they can’t bury him yet because the two wives with their children are still dragging for the property,” she wrote.
Shockingly, she revealed that the properties have been left to rot due to neglect. Even the will the man left behind—naming trusted friends and his lawyer as executors—has failed to resolve the matter.

His properties are left to ruins because the family he left behind can’t come to agree. Even the will he wrote… still they couldn’t do it till date
,” she added.

https://x.com/Anambra_girl/status/1954271704496439422?t=bknokol0jKpc7dh69tYcKw&s=19

The revelation sparked outrage and sympathy online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences of family disputes in polygamous homes.

Some reactions include:

@OnyeAguata: “Nobody in the entire family ever loved the man. So nobody ever said they should set their greed aside and bury the man firsthuh?”

@MeduFavour: “Pls don’t advise anybody 😂 who get body make he or she put body, they will feel it.”

The case serves as a grim reminder of the potential chaos polygamy can bring when there is no unity, and why proper estate planning—and execution—is crucial.

For real? Who are the executors of the man's will? If they know their onions or have good counsel, this shouldn't be a big deal

Another agenda to discredit polygamy.

Before opening the thread, I knew the OP had to be a female. Una no dey tire ni? huh huh

Was MOHBAD polygamous? Or the late Herbert Wigwe, was he polygamous too? Didn't their family fight themselves over their properties? Make una rest abeg. huh huh

Any man that wants to engage in polygamy is free to do so, as long as it makes him happy. No allow any gender blackmail you into giving up your happiness just to "suit their agenda".

"Your friend's house of commotion"

If they can't execute the will of that man then his spirit should sack them for their incompetence. Looks like they have corn in their pockets.

And how is polygamy bad??
Re: Man’s Body Remains Unburied For 5 Years As Wives And Children Battle Over Proper by maasoap(m):
So many things are wrong with that man's case if the story is indeed real and not fabricated.
Firstly, he hid second wife from the first. That shouldn't be the case.
Secondly, polygamy, monogamy or disagreement on sharing of properties shouldn't affect or delay burying of the dead. They want share his corpse alongside the properties?
Thirdly, he wrote his own will but trustees couldn't implement it, that's laughable. Anyone who is not satisfied should approach the court.
Four: he has to be a Christian considering where it took place. Part of the problem stemmed from the fact that Christianity doesn't define a clear path for polygamy unlike Islam that spells out everything, so chaos is bound to happen

All of them no get sense. What has burying a Dead body got to do with the sharing of what he left behind?

I see someone already blaming Polygamy, what has that got to do with simply burying a Dead body and you guys continuing your fight after that?

The story is not clear, wetin concerned dead body with sharing of properties? Is he going to wake up and share the thing for them? That is why I like Islam we don't have time to delayed burial in a very simple manner.I am a proud Muslim brother.

There's nothing wrong with polygamy except the evil the female gender brings to bear on mankind.

Ever wonder when a woman has children from different men, those very children are united and live in peace?

But when a man has children for different women, each woman indoctrinate thier child to see the other and their father as evil?

The thing with polygamy is the men chose to not teach women their place.

Polygamy is not the problem here.
You said the man wrote a will, so why can't they implement the will?
Lack of education is the only problem I am seeing here.

Reasons why we should all understand the importance of succession planning and will writing. If those families were all doing well you'll hardly hear about such in a where everyone is independent or when there is a will on ground already

Re: Man’s Body Remains Unburied For 5 Years As Wives And Children Battle Over Proper by Blue3k(m):
People learn to probate your will or set up a trust. Its irresponsible not to if you have assets. Have a plan for your things after you die so the living dont have to argue about it.

1. Write a Valid Will

You need to meet the legal requirements under the Wills Act or the relevant State Wills Law:

• Be of sound mind.
• Be at least 18 years old (21 in some customary contexts).
• Sign the will in the presence of two witnesses, who also sign in your presence.
•Clearly appoint executors.

2 Deposit the Will at the Probate Registry

You go to the Probate Registry of the High Court in the state where:
• You live, or
• Your major property is located.

Submit:

• The original signed will in a sealed envelope.
• A completed Form for Lodgement of Will.
• Payment for safe custody fees (usually a flat fee, e.g., ₦5,000–₦20,000 depending on state).

3. Receipt & Registration

•The Registry gives you an acknowledgment slip (keep this safe).
•Your will is indexed in their confidential records.
•No one can open it until your death.

4. What Happens When You Pass Away

• The executor (or a relative) presents your death certificate and the acknowledgment slip to the Probate Registry.
• The will is formally opened in court — the process is called “reading of the will.”
• The executors then apply for a Grant of Probate — but since the will is already lodged and verified, the process is faster and less open to dispute.
1. Decide the Purpose of the Trust

For estate planning, common purposes include:

• Avoiding probate — assets in the trust don’t go through the slow High Court process.
• Protecting minors or vulnerable beneficiaries — funds released only at certain ages or conditions.
• Managing property across states or countries — simplifies succession.
• Asset protection — shielding from creditors or disputes.
• Privacy — unlike wills, trust details aren’t made public in probate.

2. Choose the Type of Trust

For estate planning, the most common in Nigeria are:
• Revocable Living Trust — You keep control during your lifetime, can amend or revoke.
• Irrevocable Trust — Cannot be changed once set up; stronger asset protection.
• Testamentary Trust — Created inside your will, activated after death (still goes through probate).
• Discretionary Trust — Trustee decides how and when to give benefits.
• Fixed Trust — Beneficiaries and shares are predetermined.

3. Select the Trustee

Options:

• Individual trustee — trusted family member, friend, or professional.
• Corporate trustee — licensed trust companies (regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria) like:
• ARM Trustees
• First Trustees (FBNQuest)
• STL Trustees
• For long-term, corporate trustees are safer because individuals can die, relocate, or mismanage.

4. Engage a Lawyer Experienced in Trust Law

Trusts in Nigeria are governed mainly by:

• Trustees Law (varies by state)
• Trustees Act 1893 (still applicable where not replaced)
• Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) — for corporate trustees
• Relevant Stamp Duties Act and Land Use Act

Your lawyer will:

Draft the Trust Deed.
Ensure compliance with state property laws if real estate is involved.
Advise on tax implications (Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Duty, VAT exemptions).

5. Draft the Trust Deed

Key clauses include:

• Settlor’s details and declaration of trust.
• Trustee’s acceptance.
• List of assets placed in trust.
Beneficiaries and their entitlements.
•Trustee’s powers (investments, sale of assets, distributions).
• Duration of trust.
• Dispute resolution mechanism.
Governing law (state or federal).

6. Transfer Assets into the Trust

Land/Buildings — Execute a Deed of Assignment or Deed of Gift to trustee; register at State Lands Registry.
Shares — Update company register of members to trustee’s name.
Bank Accounts — Open account in trust’s name.
Movable property — Use bills of sale or assignment agreements.

7. Pay Stamp Duties & Register (If Required)

Stamp duty is payable on the trust deed (amount depends on asset type and state).
If it involves charitable purposes, apply for tax exemptions at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
Some states require registration at the Probate Division for certain trust deeds.

8. Maintain & Administer

Trustees manage assets according to the deed.
Annual reports to beneficiaries (especially if corporate trustee).
Settlor can add assets over time if the deed allows.

No one ever really loved the dead man when he was alive.
The people around him were all dealers who were after what they are really benefiting from him.
This case has nothing to do with being polygamous when the man was alive.
It is a case of the greedy wives and their children.
The children of the man are so mindless about their father being in the morgue and focusing on the property the man left behind. Such children are not worthy to be called children.
And it shows that the children are useless to themselves, they are not economically viable on their own.
The man extended family are also very docile and not active.
In all of this mess, the children and the siblings of the dead man are too greedy and mindless

It has nothing to do with the man who has passed away life styles while alive.
God help us
