Social media wasn't really a thing when I served, but I still remember the long talk my parents had with me the night before I travelled, and the words of advice they offered.

◾ No waka anyhow.
◾ Avoid trouble, and do not get into any disagreements and fights.
◾ Be careful where you eat and drink.
◾ When going out in mufti, always have something visible on you that identifies you as a Corper.
◾ When travelling, always board vehicles at the parks, and do not stand by the roadside.
◾ If the path to your PPA is lonely, always walk in groups with other corpers.
◾ Don’t poke your nose into local politics or community squabbles.
◾ Keep your head low, do your service, and come home in one piece.

If na now, I guess they’ll have added, “Be careful what you post on social media. You never know who’s watching or how far it will spread.”

Now imagine you’re a parent. You’ve laboured and sponsored your daughter through school, paid rent, fed her, sacrificed your comfort for her education. She goes for NYSC, and in the middle of service, she posts an unnecessary, critical and derogatory video about the state she’s serving in, a video that blows up online, attracting attention and trouble.

I don’t know about you, but me, I will be maad furious. Yes, she’s an adult. Yes, she has freedom of expression. But there’s also something called sense.

She be VA remote worker so maybe she feels she doesn’t need the NYSC certificate. But after one year of service, what’s she bringing back home? Social media popularity, followers, and podcast invites? Fame that will fade in a few months. Because when the noise dies down, na family go still bear the strain.

Her online supporters that were egging her on, shouting, "she's brave, she's speaking her truth", where dem dey now? Sowore, Inibehe Effiong and the other activists that were following her around, where dem dey now?

See, this kain thing dey only sweet when it’s not your own person. But when it is, you’ll wish they had just stayed quiet, finished their service without any drama, and came home.

There’s a reason people say when in Rome, behave like the Romans do. NYSC no be activism bootcamp. It's not the time to prove you can save the world. Sometimes, wisdom is knowing which battles to fight, and which ones to walk past.

When we were getting our NYSC call up letter one of the staff told us that this is a new world out there, Your privilege as a student ends at the school gate and you would be treated as a regular adult.

Gone are the days you will go somewhere and because you didn't get served the way you want, you go ahead and start mini alutas, the real world doesn't give you that benefit and you will be handled anyhow.

Your meal ticket (certificate) which you and your family worked for, is one mis step from turning sour. Every action in life has consequences

In our NYSC days, the LG chairman insisted on the CLO must be a Hausa speaker. cos he cant be stressing himself to speak English. Some of my colleagues insisted the LG chairman cannot dictate to them and refused

I just asked them what is more important to you, Leaving this place in the next 6 months or proving rights to a LG chairman in the middle of nowhere. There was an an Ibo lady corper who lived in the North and could speak Hausa who was interested, We gave the post to her and she was able to handle the LG folks till we left

No one was singled out or punished
She said lagos is smelling and standard of living is high, instead of looking for solution she was punished
Same with the nurse lady that posted na our mama be this song, you can't force people to like the government or not criticize them.

What as the government done to reduce the awful smell in lagos(Island) or the standard of living

Lol, that was another very crazy era, open confession to killing hundreds or even thousands of people yet the authorities didn't think to look into their serial killing ...Yea, people cashed out like mad from that thing.

The scientific explanation for things and exposure is one part of the explanation, but there's also the part of people just not having interest in these sort of things again. Even in Church, I can't remember the last time that pastor preached about the book of Revelation and the end of the world...if it's not prosperity, it's some other sort of self-help doctrine, and we can't say these pastors don't "believe" or at least acknowledge these parts of the bible as God's world.

Someone posted a job role in Abuja. He wanted 2:1 or First class, and he shared a picture of the crowd that came for a job of 150k.

It took Adekunle Gold (A kid our own parents will warn us as "Unserious" to change the life someone who got First class from UI.

Many of them are better off despite what you see online, All those who have office 9-5 jobs have NYSC certificates to show and get those jobs. Those jobs are the difference in many peoples lives including me.

Education, Degrees with NYSC certificates have pulled many people from poverty and uplifted them more than you know in this country

Anyone can become successful that is true but not having a thing against you like a NYSC cert or bad internet reputation also help

The late Kolawole Olawuyi made an entire career off bursting these guys back in the days. This Ukoko fisher , TB Joshua and one other woman that claimed she was God were the prominent Kola Olawuyi's cases I still remember very well. The man really demystified those guys back then.

That woman's case was much later when Kola Olawuyi had moved to GalaxyTV and was airing the program on Sunday afternoons.( I think the woman's name was Malaika or so) The woman claimed she created heaven; in fact she created Kola Olwuyi that came to interview her . The man say lai lai o, no be u create me. What was shocking was that the woman's church actually had members who believe she is indeed God.

That woman's format is still being used by Olumba Olumba till date. The papa say na him be holy spirit (comforter) that was promised when Jesus left the earth. When the papa die, the son Roland that took over still continue from where him papa stop by still claiming to be the holy spirit personified till date.

When I saw people raving about TB Joshua in the 2010's I just dey laugh .

Modified: I have seen the video. The air hostes was going for the curtain Kwam2 held on to and mistakenly the lady's top got torn. Either way, seeing how it all started, I still think everything could have been avoided by simply walking out of the plane.

Pheew...Helen Ukpabio did unchecked damage in her hey days, she go still dey run am on a low, but she's not moving mad like she used to before, she's gotten so much attention come her way, including one viral documentary by some foreign reporters.

There was even one period like that they dragged her daughter on Twitter for several days. Her daughter works in the entertainement industry was really into that emo/gothic style, which was especially odd since she'd have fit the profile of somebody that her mum would recommend for deliverance. She was giving the people back to back, defending her mum, but it was always going to be a losing battle

Too many kids in Akwa-Ibom were labelled witches and lost limbs and even their lives to that madness, less said about the irreperable damage it did to families the better. Or is it old people that were suffering from dementia and found themselves in the wrong places and were labelled witches and lynched...this was very common in Benin City and it'd get reported as news by TV Stations. Edo Central was a den of witch labelling, families got ostracized and I'm sure it's still a problem till today.
