In the mid-1990s, Imo State, Nigeria, witnessed one of its darkest crime stories ,  the Otokoto ritual killings. This tragic case was not just about a gruesome murder; it exposed how ritual practices, corruption, and greed had deeply rooted themselves in society. The events shook Owerri and left a lasting scar on Nigeria’s history.

The Otokoto ritual killings took place in September 1996 when 11-year-old Anthony Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, a groundnut seller, was lured into the Otokoto Hotel in Owerri. He was promised business opportunities but instead met a horrifying death.

Check source for full story and how it ended. His head was severed, and his body buried ,  part of a ritual killing meant to use human parts for wealth. The Otokoto Hotel was owned by Vincent Duru, a wealthy businessman with strong political connections. The killing was carried out by one of his staff, Innocent Ekeanyanwu, who was arrested while transporting the boy’s head in a polythene bag.

Yeah it is still deserted up till now. It is in a pile of rubbles and no stores down stairs unless you are talking about A2g plaza close to it.

The said Chief Vincent Duru was sentenced to death but was never killed. He stayed in the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility till he went blind and he recently died from natural cause
You are right. His political friends still moved him away to Garbon or so. Where he enjoyed life before his death. He was buried last year or so. Man was extremely wealthy in his time.

Too many atrocities committed. His kids too, there eye no good.

Many people said life has been better in the 90s than cenctury we are today. What has lead to the ritual killing in 90s, is it still not poverty?

I remember that otokoto time. God save me and my paddy. I want for youth service at abia state, I remember driving through owerri enroute abia. I saw lovely hotels approaching owerri, one that caught my eyes was chibet hotel, a brand new shining syricture, in my mind I said owerri must be a goodtime zone.
After a week or so in the orientation camp, I and my new paddy in the camp decided to drive from the orientation camp to owerri from goodtime, I had called a chick who was staying with family in owerri.
We had drinks in town when it was late we started looking for hotels to stay. Omo, we landed in this otokoto hotel. We were about to pay for room, I out of the blues asked for drinks to buy, they said the bar was closed so not alcohol. That was what saved our lives. We decided not to lodge there since we wount be able to get beers.
Few weeks after orientation we decide to go home before commencing service in our places of primary assignment. I was shocked to see destruction everywhere when we drove pass owerri, even that chibet hotel had been burnt down. That was when we heard of all the crimes being commited at that otokoto hotel. That you will lodge, people will come in at night with spare keys, slaughter and the harvest organs for sale by the hotel owners son, while the remaining parts will then be used for rituals by the father.
Obicheozor Aka Obidede was brutal. He was into kidnapping as well. That guy introduced kidnapping in OWERRI. He kidnapped Owner of Aladinma Mortuary's son, till date that boy never returned. Reasons because his Dad notified Iwuanyanwu of Obidede's plan to kidnap his Father's corpse for ransome. Forget Otokoto saga was a gathering of evil men committing atrocities. A gathering of 419ners.

They have reunite again, since 2020. And now organ harvesting is becoming a pandemic in Owerri as it stands now.

That is why I still finds it difficult to stay in any hotel.I am always afraid to lodge in any hotel except when we are in group attending a corporate meeting or seminar.

Yes,most of the otokoto and okija people fled to the SW and some SW people too started skull mining especially in Ogun around 2017 or 2018.The originators have not stop doing their money rituals while the SW,North,SS etc too have joined the fray.

Remember this those days.....it was popular in the papers, Otoko Hotel, and I think a couple of Nigerian movies came out depicting it's gruesomeness.

Okija and co. It was also during or before the Clifford Orji incident. All were within those troubled Abacha regime.
Nope,Clifford Orji was during Obasanjo and Okija too was I think during Obasanjo/yaradua

I remember it was drawn like a carton on calendar paper for people to see back in the 1990s.

Mike orji of oshodi and the rest that year. Ritual has always been a thing, social media has shown us clearly this days
