Living with HIV is a silent struggle many do not understand. This is my story; raw, honest, and from the heart.

I was diagnosed with HIV. My sister told me about her own diagnosis and that I probably got it from her. At first, I didn’t understand what it really meant, but I trusted my sister to take care of me and promised to keep it secret from our family.

Taking my drugs every day was hard. I hated it as a child, its tiring and inconvenient but I kept going because my sister said maybe one day I would be cured. It was even harder because we come from a close family, and I couldn’t tell anyone else. I had very few friends because I always felt I had to hide.

Things changed when I joined Teenage Zone, a support group for adolescents living with HIV.

We were intimate on several occasions, and we did not always use protection. I was always haunted by this decision I made, and I felt guilty, but the thought of losing him scared me so much.

To reduce the risk of my infecting him, I always made sure my viral count was low, but I knew that was not a guarantee. Finally, after four years together, I mustered up the courage to tell him.

Unlike most young men, he took it in stride, and instead of running off on me, he sought to educate himself further by speaking with some doctors.

hat singular act changed his perspective for the better regarding what it takes to be in an HIV discordant relationship and helped us forge an even closer bond.

I know that I am one of the lucky ones. Most young girls living with HIV who disclose their status to their partners after such a long time often suffer severe consequences, including public shaming and acts of violence for the ‘deception’.

The truth is that these young girls do not have the skills to negotiate safe sex with their partners, nor the support to help them through such difficult conversations. Many suffer in silence, afraid to speak out or ask for help.

But I believe change is possible. By joining support groups like Teenage Zone, educating ourselves and others, and building strong, understanding relationships, young people living with HIV can find hope, strength, and love.

My story is one of survival, courage, and the power of trust. I am a young mother now, living positively, and I want other girls to know that they are not alone and that life can still be beautiful.

The world was on the cusp of eliminating HIV for good until Trump came. Outside the breakthrough of Lenacapavir, American scientists had finally figured out how to send targeted medication to the reservoirs of HIV hidden in the body. Places where drugs couldn't get to normally. There was excitement in the scientific community. It was short lived.

Trump came and cancelled all funding for HIV research and programs meant to ensure HIV drugs get to communities that desperately need them. Lenacapavir is very expensive. This twice yearly injection costs roughly 28000 dollars. With funding for generics, the shots could come down to 50 dollars each. But Trump has stopped that.

There's hope that similar breakthroughs can come from Europe. I strongly believe that the battle against HIV can be won and very soon.

It's easier said. Your life won't remain the same again. I mentored a girl who later had a bf without me knowing. She had introduced some which I kicked against but I understood, she wanted to settle down and without further delay. This guy came home from Philippines .He infected her without even disclosing his status and travelled back. They both grew up in same area before he travelled to live in Philippines. She always describes how harsh the drug is on her body and the way the virus had changed her life forever.

Abstinence is the panacea.

it might help to know how ur sister contacted it and even probably passed it in to u considering u were very young and a kid then. Sounds almost unbelievable.

All thesame an insightful and touching story.

ABC of Aids always come to mind.

A - Abstainance - This is the safest way to stay away from Hiv/Aids.

B - Being faithful - Remaining committed to your partners surely reduces the possibility of contacting Hiv/Aids.
This also includes maintaining great hygiene on the use of sharps objects.

C - Condoms. - use of rubber surely reduce the possibility of getting infected, but with high frequency of sex, the risk level goes high as well.
Condoms are the last line of defence against HIV/Aids infections.
