IG orders KWAM 1’s probe over unruly conduct at Abuja airport

The Nigeria Police Force has begun investigating Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as KWAM 1, over his alleged unruly behaviour that reportedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had formally petitioned the police over the incident, which occurred on August 5, 2025, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.

Following the petition, he said the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Nigeria Police Force has received an official petition from NCAA over an alleged incident involving Mr. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1). He is accused of engaging in unruly conduct that allegedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023, following a reported incident on 5 August 2025 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.


“In response, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the matter, to unravel the circumstances which led to the ugly incident and ensure justice is served accordingly, ” the statement partly read.

He added that the police remain committed to upholding safety and security in Nigeria’s aviation sector and will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure compliance with aviation laws.

“The Force hereby assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, while assuring stakeholders in the sector of improved collaboration towards aviation security and strict compliance with aviation laws”, the statement stated.

KWAM 1 was involved in an altercation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos.

The dispute began when he carried a flask onboard, which aviation staff suspected contained alcohol, a prohibited substance on domestic flights in Nigeria.

When staff requested that he surrender the flask, KWAM 1 refused. He then reportedly moved to block the aircraft from taxiing, escalating the confrontation.

In reaction to the incident, the NCAA suspended the licences of the captain, Oluranti Ogoyi, and her first officer, Ivan Iloba, while KWAM 1 was placed on a no-fly list across all Nigerian carriers for six months pending investigation.

KWAM 1 later apologised, saying that it was never his intention to violate aviation protocols or cause inconvenience.

However, calls for KWAM 1’s investigation and prosecution became rife after an Ibom Air passenger, Comfort Emmanson, was remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting flight crew and security personnel during an Uyo–Lagos flight.

This is pretty long over due. I love Wasiu's Music but Justice is blind folded.

Strong opposition is good in any country. If not that Peter Obi and some opposition party members from ADC called out this Tinubu government after the Ibom air trouble with the lady, the government would have swept the other incident involving that musician under the carpet. Wayo wayo government.

Rule og law should be upheld no matter who is at the receiving end of the knife.

It doesn't make sense does it? Why didn't the NCAA petition the IG regarding Emmanson? Instantaneously, she was charged to court and remanded in prison. That was the right decision as assault of any form should not be tolerated.

However, we have the case of another individual who forcefully obstructed the operation of an airline. Not only did he bring an unauthorized liquid to the plane, when told that what he brought on was not allowed, he actively sought to prevent the plane from taking off. That is condemnable.

There are clear penalties for obstructing aircraft under Nigerian law. That the individual in question still runs free is an indictment on anyone charged with ensuring sanctity of operations in the nations airports. The NCAA has no justifiable reason for passing the buck to the desk of the IG. It should have acted there and then in the airport since it has policemen and air marshalls attached to the agency. The same marshalls who needed no instructions from anyone before Emmanson was bundled away.

if d plane was hijacked why was the licence of the pilot suspended? Hijacking under law involves taking control of an aircraft maybe with weapons and diverting it.... Kwam 1 blocked the plane physically but he did not seize it or redirect it.... Infact kwam1 behaviour is like someone looking for death because u don't stand in front of a moving plane....

If you know where the minister of aviation is from, you will know this is what they live for.

We just hope that president Tinubu will at the least return Nigeria to regional govt with the 1963 constitution that we all agreed on. So we will have little to almost zero interaction with these people on the daily.

I just did a topic on the cunning game they’re playing to have every side covered. Unfortunately, Yoruba haven’t figured this game out. I believe that to be IG, you must be a bit intelligent, so if he doesn’t toss this political petition into the garbage where it belongs and knock the bully out once and for all, he will look back and regret how he allowed himself to be used unfairly to create an unending mess. He needs to understand that nothing this govt will do that will be given credit, it will always be one thing after another. There are case dismissals, charges drops, lowest misdemeanors that carry no arrest to probation or community service, and then there are felony crimes. But in Nigeria most people don’t understand what justice is about.

When there was no petition, they called it “his connection that made him above the law” and now that a petition is in, it’s “there must be an evidence of his guilt for someone that close to the president to be probed.”
