They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different outcome. Nigerians have tested both PDP and APC. The facts are clear: under PDP, purchasing power moved from ₦24,000 in 1999 to a low of ₦16,000 by the end of their tenure in 2015; not perfect, but still within a manageable range. This was the economy APC, the self-proclaimed “progressives” inherited. Instead of improving it, they wrecked it. In less than a decade, they’ve dragged us from ₦16,000 to over ₦300,000 by the close of 2024. Give this anti-progressive party another four years, and the economy won’t just be damaged, it will be unrecognizable, perhaps we might be looking at N1000,000. |

Reference: Meh Not one, not one, not one subsequent year, government or political tenure has been better than the previous one, that is the one it replaced which clearly shows a detachment of electoral choices from the reality of quality governance. Not really They got rice and wheelbarrow Meaning that Nigerians by and large have been voting for the wrong reasons. But they have been voting And until integrity, knowledge and performance becomes the only, the only, the only criteria for empowering people at the ballot to superintendend over institutions, the decline will continue as sure as the sun rises. But they performed by sharing rice, tribe and religion with integrity knowledge Unfortunately up till yesterday night the signs through the polity and civil space, as a matter of fact. in our everyday lives paints a retention of the dark tunnel we seem unable to get out of.need a light Got one? |

You won't see APC miscreants on this thread. But just create a thread about Peter Obi and watch them crawling out of their dark holes like zombies. |

Awoleesu:Seriously? Education is not a scam after all. Let me explain to you in a term that you would understand. At the beginning of Obasanjo’s government, the purchasing power he met was 24,000. By the time he handed over to Yaradua, it was reduced to 16,000. And that was what Yaradua met in 2007. Yaradua further reduced it to 14,000. And that’s what Jonathan met. But if after this explanation and you still don’t understand then you might need to go and learn comprehension |

Blizzy9ja:You're quoting Tinubu, do you think he even understood what he was saying then? Someone that was just saying rubbish to sound intelligent. The people that voted him also didn't understand what that means How do we vote obviously cognitively weak old people as president, see Buhari too as against sound people who contested with them |

ibabz:Just try and read again the write up to gain proper understanding about the way things work in proper societies and why we are here today. He was the best because he gave this country a chance to self determination, he allowed institutions work and he listened to those of us asking for restructuring. |

Awoleesu:I’m deeply sorry if you feel offended by the way I responded to your comment. But bruh you may need to pay a close attention to the first lines: “𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗝𝗢 [𝟴𝗬𝗥𝗦] — The purchasing power of ₦10,000 at the start of the tenure was equivalent to ₦24,348 at the end of tenure”. “𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗝𝗢 [𝟴𝗬𝗥𝗦] — The purchasing power of ₦10,000 at the start of the tenure was equivalent to ₦24,348 at the end of tenure.” It says “at the start”, which simply means what they met. Also it says “at the end” which means the achievement they are leaving behind. No offense intended bruh |

Cromagnon:And how come you couldn't 'vote out' the government that replaced it even though performance and quality of life declined even more. This is exactly what this topic is all about. How come we keep on voting and retaining governments that worsen the country. And how come that since 1999 it is only once we have successfully removed a poor, non performing government. Only once, in 2015. Now 2027 is coming let us see what the excuses will be. |
| Re: The Purchasing Power Of Nigerians By Government Since 1999 by Awoleesu(m): 10:00am On Aug 14, 2025 |
ibabz:Hmmm... Alright, I acknowledge your good intentions and fine! No hurt feelings. But since you want us to engage constructively on this, lemme iterate my understanding of the semantics: First, there is a Constant (the integer #10,000) which is the yardstick of determining the variables. The variables (24k, 14k, 16k.... ) Are the functions of the constant. Therefore, the results of each variable is juxtaposed to the constant at the end of each statistical cycle. So, here is my submission: Under OBJ, what was worth 10k through his 8 years inflationary cycle climaxed at 24k. For e.g say when he started in 1999, we bought a bag of rice @10k but by the time his tenure ended the same bag of rice cost 24k. (A % increase of 140%) Now, under Yar'adua, say a gallon of vegetable oil was valued at 10k, by the time he was out in 3 years, that gallon sold for 14k. (A % increase of 40%) And the variable deviation continues to count.... OBJ - 140% inflation rate, Yar'adua -40 % I. R I quite understand that you may have stayed on the same item for example (a bag of rice) to arrive at your judgement but in reality, Economics doesn't read it that way. So, my dear brother, what I think is that a cursory look at the figures may have given a Jonathan away as the 'most preferred' but a curious, detailed analysis supported with facts will condescend to seeing Yar'adua as the best. When I talk about "facts" , the economic histogram will remember Yar'adua's as the only administration since 1999 who attempted to stabilize the exchange rate and brought it lower than it inherited it. This is not to rob Jonathan of his concerted efforts at governance, but where facts are sacrosanct, perhaps emotions have to give way. Thank you once again for your good approach to this discourse. |

alphaconde:You're wrong. Things were much worse under Buhari but were dusguised. When Buhari took office, 26% of federal government revenue went towards debt servicing. By the time he left office, 97% of it was going towards debt servicing. He was borrowing excessively. He was relying heavily on ways and means which is the act of the central bank printing of money to lend to the government. Then for foreign exchange, there was only $4bn in net foreign reserves while the cbn was owing $7bn to buyer. That simply means there was a severe shortage of forex. The CBN had been selling forex well below its true value and thats led to severe shortages. A country should have at least 4 months worth of import cover. The CBN barely had 1 month of imports. The government could no longer keep borrowing. Nigerias credit rating or score had fallen, and no one wanted to lend the country any more. That's why structural reforms were started by Tinubu. He ended the fuel subsidy, saving about 10 trillion. He floated the Naira so it can find its true value. This led to the crashing of the Naira to $1 to N1,550. Thay ended up being the true value of the Naira. Also, he worked hard at increasing government revenue. The reforms are working. Less than 50% of government revenue is now spent on debt servicing. The net foreign reserves has grown from $4bn to $40bn today, enough to cover 8 months of imports. |

Awoleesu:Even though there was a "inflation" with yaradua .. how to evaluate purchasing power is to match the Minimum wage with inflation rate Yaradua reduce fuel price, and fuel is one main determinant on cost of living and production .... thats technically means cost of living dropped under yaradua slight inflation rate increase is tenable for any govt, check around But for a 50% 100% 300% rise as in Tpain case that is crazy and unjustifiable |

When Nigeria surpassed 500m economy growth. The US feels threatened like they always do when they saw economy growth. They use book haram to destabilize Nigeria and Obama have Jonathan removed. Nigeria election under Jonathan was the best since the history of Nigeria. |
