If Nnamdi Kanu Dies in Detention, Hold Britain Responsible – American-Igbo Veterans Warn

The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has issued a strong warning to the British government, stating it will be held accountable if Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), dies in detention.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, AVID President Dr. Sylvester Onyia accused Britain of abandoning its citizen and aiding Nigeria in the continued detention and prosecution of Kanu, who holds both British and Nigerian citizenship. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Kanu, arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and controversially renditioned to Nigeria, has spent over four years in custody on terrorism charges. Onyia noted that his health is deteriorating rapidly and stressed that Britain has a legal and moral duty to intervene.

“Britain’s Silence is Crimson with Complicity”
Onyia cited international laws, including Article 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), which obligates the UK to provide medical assistance to its citizens regardless of dual nationality.

“Kanu’s health is failing. Britain must intervene medically. Failure makes it complicit in death. If Kanu dies, Britain will not be an observer – it will be an accomplice,” Onyia declared.

He further accused Britain of deliberate complicity, referencing the UN Convention Against Torture and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which he says were violated in Kanu’s rendition from Kenya.

Allegations of Collusion
The AVID leader alleged that the British government has been directly involved in Kanu’s legal troubles.

“Britain didn’t just look away, it helped script the persecution. Days after British officials visited Kanu in 2021, Nigeria amended charges against him. That’s no coincidence,” Onyia claimed.

He also criticised Britain for downplaying the Court of Appeal’s ruling that discharged Kanu, saying:

“Discharge is acquittal. Britain’s denial is fallacy.”

“Dual Nationality is Not a Death Sentence”
Onyia rejected Britain’s claim that Kanu’s Nigerian citizenship limits its intervention, insisting UK law requires protection of all citizens regardless of dual nationality.

He argued that Kanu’s ordeal is rooted in historical and political bias:

“Britain would never accept this for a British citizen in Europe. But for an Igbo man in Africa, it’s business as usual. Why? Because he challenged the artificial state Britain created in 1914.”

Demands to the British Government
AVID urged Britain to:

Publicly condemn Kanu’s rendition.

Demand his immediate release.

Launch a parliamentary inquiry into violations of the Vienna Convention.

End diplomatic support for his detention and prosecution.

“A government that claims to defend human rights must start with its citizens. Silence is not neutrality – it is complicity. If Nnamdi Kanu dies in detention, his blood will be on Britain’s hands,” Onyia warned.

Background
Nnamdi Kanu remains a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics. While supporters see him as a freedom fighter advocating for Biafran self-determination, the Nigerian government labels him a threat to national security.

With tensions high, AVID’s statement signals growing international pressure on the UK to act before it’s too late.

Every worthwhile fight starts with imprisonment of the leader. Once they are held that long, the realization of what they were fighting for start starts moving close to realization . At least, for the first time; I commend you that you know history and origin of common man suffering. Indeed, common man suffering started "after the biafra war" and "not before" the war. It means without Biafra war, there wouldn't be suffering. One selfish man started that needless Biafra war before he cowardly ran away in skirt and blouse to expose his people to higher dimension of suffering after leading millions to be killed.

Instead of looking inward for better solution, another one selfish man that old age later relegated to ordinary landlord collecting rentage for living started "MasoB" in another selfish mode which formed Biafra part two that unlease suffering to their common men and women and throwing their dead bodies into rivers.

We thought the suffering will end, unfortunately; Kanu started part 3a of Biafra war that gathered able youths into bushes training them as ESN to attack soldiers in empty stomachs promising them they will be compensated when biafra is achieved when their leaders were using donations to buy Fendi, hired body guards and enjoying their life. Police and Nigeria armies wasted so many of them hiding inside bushes cannibalishing their Igbo victims. That coward Biafra leader also ran away until Buhari just caught him easily without any resistance.

Every Biafran was just thinking on when will the suffering created by Igbos for igbos stop? Following weeks and months came part 3b of Biafra war lead by another one run away leader called ekpa who now came with "wotowoto" suffering for his people by randomly labelling them as saboteurs killing common man, hijacking their tri-cycles and motors for operation more suffering.

He had minister of petroleum and oil and gas without accounting for how much sales he made or used the money to build schools, help traders or give scholarships. He didn't use the oil money to help his people, instead he was busy giving them "wotowoto suffering" and using their virgins for rituals. He turned many youths to bush and forest citizens that leave among wild animals and behaving like them. They sneaked out of the bushes to cause more act of 99.99% domestic grown act of wickedness against their own people to grow suffering to highest in decade among their people.

In other to end this suffering, Tinubu boldly within a year broke the back bone of ipob/esn to let them know new sheriff is in town. He got that Biafra foreign president arrested and kept in the worst cell to feed only on "Finland version of Okpa". Ever since president Tinubu conquered that part 3b-Biafra war, there has been peace. Those that were spared and a life among the ipobs are now being adopted by political parties like ADC and LP for the first time in the history of Nigeria-Biafra. Now, I can leave any part of Nigeria and arrive Obollo-Afor/Nzukka or Enugu or Nite-Mile or any part of the east on Monday to buy "Abacha-africa salad and Okpa" with peace of mind without monitoring my back for fullani-ipob comming out of the bush unexpectedly.
