Yiaga Africa To Tinubu: Publish INEC Chair Nominees For Public Scrutiny by Bobloco(op): 12:17pm On Aug 17, 2025
......before n’assembly screening

Yiaga Africa has asked President Bola Tinubu to publish the names of potential candidates for the position of chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and subject them to public scrutiny before screening by the national assembly.

Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, will step down in October after serving the maximum two terms, totalling 10 years, while about 10 national commissioners will also leave office before the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Friday during a roundtable discussion on “Safeguarding the Independence of INEC”, Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa, said the transitions “would perhaps make INEC weaker and also impact the quality of the next elections”.

“And so, we have said that aside from the constitutional requirements of questionable integrity and non-partisanship, there’s a great need to look for people who have experience in elections or in a related field because elections are a complex technical activity,” Itodo said.

“The second point is to look for individuals who are independently minded, individuals who cannot be swayed by any form of political persuasion, individuals who can withstand political pressure because it serves the interest of Nigeria, whether it is the incumbent or even the opposition.

“And for the third part, you need people with mental alertness. The INEC job is very complex and tasking, so you need people who are alert to manage elections.

“Before he sends a nomination to the national assembly, can you publish the list of people he’s considering, ask citizens and civil society and professional organisations to submit objections and memos on those people, interview them, and have a first screening process before you send those names?

“If the next elections are really going to be credible and the perception of integrity is going to be high, it’s going to begin with the appointment process for the next INEC chairman and the national commissioners.

“And so, we are saying that the president has an opportunity, and the national assembly does have an opportunity to do what will inspire public confidence in this electoral process and let them not treat these appointments with any form of executive overreach or political manipulation.”

Impossible. How do you want him to rig the election without putting his person as INEC chairman?

No tangible reforms and progress can ever be made as long as the president is vested with the power of appointing electoral umpires.

Tinubu can appoint himself as INEC chairman and Seyi Tinubu as Lagos REC. Folashade and Oluremi as Rivers and Kano RECs respectively, he will still lose 2027 elections. I just pity those who are jubilant over the over-militarized and inconsequential by-elections. I hope you will have 10 policemen each to man the 178,000 polling units in 2027, just as it was reported on the by-elections. Better start recruiting now to get 1.8m policemen and army to rig for you.

Oga rest. LP had no candidates. The coalition has said ADC is for 2027 elections, not 2025 by-elections. Even at that, what is the sense in fielding candidates that will go to NASS and defect when pressured by APC lapdog.

By the way, in 2027 as it was in 2023, Nigerians will be voting for their CANDIDATES, not political parties. Again, we heard that in Edo, APC had more security men and thugs than voters. Well, prepare to recruit 2million security men to man the over 178,000 polling units at 10 policemen per polling unit. If not, it will be a long night for Tinubu on election day.

Although Yiaga Africa point of view may be acceptable by many... but in Nigeria real life scenario... it would not achieve a free and fair election...

You need to understand that the office of the President supersede all others... which is the right thing... and the legal clause of any office or agency been independent is a mere paper work... because the President oversee and veto decisions...

The only way to have an INEC leadership with "biting teeth"... is to scrap the nomination of individuals to become INEC Chairman... then the office of the INEC leadership should be committed to the Council of States (which comprise the former Head of States)...

Because the Council of States is the only body that can confront face to face... any sitting President or election candidates...

When this change is achieved... then we can have a free and fair election in Nigeria...

Remember... I will contest in the next election... for the office of Nigeria President...
