Giant Garment Factory In Ogun State To Produce 4.5 Million Garments PER DAY! by Quintessence44(op): 3:11am On Aug 18, 2025
Ogun state is currently building the world's largest garment factory, and it will position Nigeria as a textile powerhouse on a global scale, producing over 4.4 MILLION garments a day.

The factory is so massive it will employ directly and indirectly over 150,000 Nigerians.

This is a white elephant project.

Nigeria has zero competitive advantage in the production of cotton or textile fabrics. The cotton produced here is of poor quality, and it's even in insufficient quantities.

There is rumoured to be only 3 functioning textile factories in the whole of the country. The rest have shutdown. That's how bad the country is in producing fabrics.

The way to go would be to slash import duty on textile fabrics to 0%. The garment factory can now turn the imported fabrics into garments which would then be exported.

^^^ textile is the input to garment making. While i consider the figure outrageous and unrealistic, it is better to have the factory for local production sake.

Funny how your solution in your last paragraph is about zero import duties on fabrics and not what we posses competitive advantage in.

.
I don't think so.

This is a private investment. I think by Indians. They will have done their home work on viability.

No white elephant here, though I think some of the job numbers are probably exaggerated.

A $2.5 billion garment factory is what your brokazz is waking up this morning to dismiss as a ''white elephant project''??

What feasibility studies did you conduct compared to the people who spent millions of dollars evaluating the entire proposition?

You mustn't be insulting everyone for asking a simple question.

It seems some of you log off your brains while logging into Nairaland.

Do you know how much they spent on Ajaokuta steel and many other white elephant projects?

If you plan a seaport in Abuja, you don't need a rocket scientist to know its going to fail.

It's going to fail. The maths does not add up. The textile and garment industry is ultra competitive and export oriented, and their modus operandi dead on arrival.

Dude. It's not a govt project.

Even if it were, it would not fail because projects today are mostly Public Private Partnerships, with shareholder money involved. The railway for instance is being expanded, and is doing well, and it's govt-run, even at state level like Lagos state. It's all working.

You're stuck in the past with that Ajaokuta stuff. Nigeria has moved on.

I hope its not in Nigeria they plan sell 4.5 million garments produced per day. because that is DOA. If its export can they compete with Bangladesh, India, Vietnam etc.

When your region and state is peaceful, you get this huge investment. Let those bitter people keep sitting at home every Monday and think they will get foriegn investment. Militancy, kidnapping and deve fees cost most south south states of massive investment. Look at delta today, you will weep for Warri the oil city. They were warned back then but felt they were doing the right thing just as it is now in south east. Nobody invest his hard earned money in a volatile region.

Textilecand garments are usually where most developing countries start from. It is labour intensive, and low labour cost is a huge consideration. That's why your shirts are made in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and so on. Production is largely export oriented. Only a small quantity is for the domestic market.

It is also fiercely competitive. The Nigerian textile industry collapsed in the face of competition. That means their fabrics are not competitive. They do not even export, as the international market should be main focus.

Garment manufacturers dependent on locally sourced fabrics, which are dependent on poor quality locally produced cotton stand zero chance in the global market where at least 99% of production will be destined for

must it be export oriented from day one? How about import substitution or reduction in the medium term?

You know what you are talking about. It is absolutely true that some countries started with garment manufacturing, even China was once at that stage.

Ogun state garment factory initiative is a public -private partnership between ogun state government and Arise India industrial platform.
