Every successful nation on earth recognizes and harnesses the full potential of its people. Talent, vision, and sound judgment when utilized effectively become the bedrock of national development. Nigeria’s greatest challenge has never been a lack of resources or diversity, but a consistent failure in leadership. Over the past five decades, we’ve seen glimpses of potential, yet little that has sparked genuine, long-lasting progress. In this ongoing struggle, one group appears to have demonstrated consistent clarity when it comes to identifying and supporting quality leadership: the Igbo people. From their early backing of President Obasanjo and the late President Yar’Adua arguably two of our more competent leaders to their strong preference for Goodluck Jonathan over the eventual disaster that was Buhari, the Igbos have often aligned with the side of vision, stability, and competence. Most recently, their overwhelming support for Peter Obi over the status quo represented by Tinubu reflects a community that sees beyond ethnic or political sentiment and prioritizes merit. Much like their global approach to businessscouring the world for the best goods, forging trade links, and turning profit through smart judgment, Igbos bring this same discernment to the political space. Their pattern is clear: a desire for functional leadership and national progress. Perhaps it's time Nigeria did something different. Maybe we should start listening, not just at the ballot box, but from the very beginning of the political process. From the primaries to policy debates, let’s pay closer attention to where the Igbos lean, and more importantly, why. It might seem unconventional, but in a country desperate for direction, fresh thinking isn’t a risk—it’s a necessity. |
