In my culture it was like that ( women keep their father's name) before the white men brought in their method.

Lukuluku69:
Not necessary but we do it here in Africa. It is a Legacy of the Romans I think who put their names on everything they own.

So, a Wife taking his Husband name simply means the Husband now owns her.

I prefer the Islamic way in this, keep your Father's name. Na him born you.

Ni name change needed if you divorce and remarry a zillion times.

It does, for the sake of your kids, have a unified surname
Wrong again, Sir. For the sake of your kids, birth certificate (and letter of consent from the absent parent) would suffice. I am not speaking on something I do not know of.

It is more paperwork, but it is not an issue.

I prefer and hope my future wife choose to keep her surname. But that's just me

But won't it be funny for husband and wife to be bearing different names? Surnames I mean. So what about the children? You have a child your name is Shara Stone your child's name is Sindy Cara. Does it make sense. But you're one family with different names.

Exactly.

And I think that's the way it should be.

Even the name you want to keep belongs to your father...why not lay a good foundation by renouncing your father's name and taking your mother's name before she got married??

Anti-Christ everywhere...by the time you guys are done with this world everything will be upside down.

Women don't do anything without a reason behind it, most times it's for selfish reasons.

Her username alone has given you a clue of the kinda person she is.

Even God said I have called you by my name. You don't want to bear his name, no worries. Stay glued to your father.

I believe it is compulsory in Nigeria's constitution, since we are using British laws to govern our country.
Islamically, it is not allowed for a wife to adopt her husband's name and and discard her father's name.

It sounds strange really, at least in the Culture we have now but in the Middle East, you can have the scenario you painted and guess what? They are cool with it and no one complains!

They have the System of knowing whose Son and Daughter you are into many generations.

It is in the System.

What is the difference between being married or single?
Why did former presidential candidate Hillary use her hubby's surname despite being questioned by chimamanda adiche?
If you don't want to adopt the guy's name after being married to him, just stay married!
Re: Is It Compulsory For A Woman To Take Her Husband’s Surname After Marriage? by mechanics(m):
Yes, that's the right thing, once a woman is married, the right thing is to adopt her husband's surname.

Amid ongoing debates, the question arises: should a woman be required to adopt her husband’s surname after marriage? To husbands, is this a matter of importance, or do you view it as insignificant?
Nowadays, women no longer see it as a compulsory thing to do....and I support them honestly. I even support women adding their maiden name alongside their husband's surname if she decides to use her husband's surname because that woman came from a family too....my daughter will definitely answer my surname even after she is married,

I never coerced my wife to change her surname after we got married....she was the one that started complaining that I behave somehow most times, that what bother other men don't bother me....that I am not even making any effort to help her change her surname to my surname....I told her its not necessary but she insisted and I said fine.....

But for my daughter, she must answer my name or surname alongside her husband's surname...its a must.....afamefuna....ahamefuna.... shocked cheesy

During Christ Time, adopting one's Father name is alien to their System. Rather, you take the name of of Town or Villages or the Trade you engage in.

That's is why Jesus is Jesus of Nazareth, Mary is Mary Magdala (Hellenised to Magdalene) etc.

There is nothing Anti-Christ in it. It is just the Culture of every clime.

Always wanting to eat their cake and have it
Men should stop payment of bride price to a none Virgin ladies to sanitised our society. There should be massive public outcry on this with immediate implementation by all men marrying henceforth.
Imagine a ladies with hook up for her 5 years in school plus youth service requesting bride price from intending innocent husband. Then next is to keep your father name. What's going on with Gen*z

This shouldn't even be a matter to be debated on,cuz this is Africa and this is one of the things that qualifies a woman to become a wife...But if you as a woman is insisting on it,then, you should stay put in your father's house and let meno-stop be your wall clock angry
Africa is fast changing. This beating of chest is no more the case. If you don't quickly adapt, you will find yourself fighting the society and you may end up living a sorrowful life.

That originate from the foundation of the institution called marriage. Two coming together to become one and the man being the Head, the woman the helpmate comes with change of identity of a woman to her husband to perfect the indivisible entity marriage. When the woman is with her parents, her identity is with her parents and changes when she marries. This is God's design not human or modernism cos God is the founders

Please providing answers to the questions below would give us a background understanding of how to answer your above questions:

a. Should the prefix "Miss" or "Mrs" be added as the title of a married woman ?

b. When a woman decides to add the prefix "Mrs" to her last name, should her last name be "her father's surname" or "her husband's surname" ?

c. When a woman weds in the church or the court premises, does the Priest or Court Representative address the newly wedded woman as "Mrs her first name, along with her husband's surname" or "Mrs her first name along with her father's surname" or "Miss her name along with her father's surname" or "Miss, her first name along with her husband's surname" ?

It has never be an Africa culture for Wife to take her husband name, It's purely white culture.

To me, women should remain her fathers name because the purpose of surname is to identify and trace linage. Or better still, wife can be using both surname, just indicate your husband name and fathers name

History should be brought back to schools because in precolonial era, women never took the names of their husbands. Names are patrilineal and only passed down by blood. It was education and religion (christianity) that brought about changing name to ones husband's name.

So sad that ladies of nowadays have no common sense and totally lack what it takes be a wife. They just want marriage just to please self and the community and to gain the tittle.

Many won't want to bear the name.
Many can't endure any challenge in the marriage
Many looks down on their husband
Many compare thier husband to other rich men
Many are not submissive but abusive

This many means 90% of them.

Some cultures do not pay bride price like the English. And they still take up the husbands name Bride price in my place is not up to 100 bucks.
In India, the ladies pay groom price yet take up the husbands name.
Do not rush to comment next time. It will lead to unnecessary exposure.
but your hungry family will demand bride price abi?

Not that the question is a bad one.

The only thing I see here is that all these kinds of questions are always coming from selfish women

The new generation ladies are always striving so hard to rub shoulders with their men
Re: Is It Compulsory For A Woman To Take Her Husband’s Surname After Marriage? by eulogised:
And then some Nigerian men will tell her she's not family even with a name change. Her name is her identity, worse case scenario add husband's name to your last name like Nwoke-Ujah, Thompson-Akinola, etc. It is a complicated process to do a name change anywhere in the world especially for women who already made a name for themselves.

Funny thing is the Bible does not record the marriage process of wife taking or changing name except for Sarah from Sarai. The names had to do with the children born from their union.

Nobody questioned me. They simply glanced at the mother's name on the birth cert and a second look at my ID and kept it moving. One thing that is always solid is the maternity of a child. If there is anything that should be questioned, it is paternity. 🥷
