The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced a new regulation mandating all passengers to switch off their phones and other electronic devices during take-off and landing.

Michael Achimugu, spokesperson of the NCAA, disclosed the directive on Tuesday via his official X handle.

He said the regulation has now been unified across all Nigerian airlines.

His words: “ALL PHONES MUST BE SWITCHED OFF DURING THE CRITICAL ASPECTS OF TAKE-OFF AND LANDING.

“All airlines must amend their security programmes to reflect this if different in their current programmes.”

He said the use of airplane mode is no longer permitted until the regulation is reviewed to reflect “evolving technological situations”.

Am I missing something?

Is that not the standard before or they just creating awareness about it again.

It was not, it was too. You can actually put your phone on Flight mode instead of total switch off. So you can watch videos or type things while on flight since those do not require internet to execute. Even the switching off and flight modes rule was just for taking off and landing and maybe during air turbulence.
But what they are saying now is that all phones should be switched off and not flight mode anymore
