The federal high court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced two individuals, Ajetsibo Emami and Solomon Akpomuai, for illicit drug trafficking.

On Monday, August 18, Deinde Dipeolu, the presiding judge, convicted 37 year old Emami on a one count charge bordering on illicit drug dealing and sentenced him to six years in prison with an option of N50 million in lieu of imprisonment.

Emami was arrested in Ikeja, Lagos, on June 28, 2025, after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raided a drug trafficking network in a three day operation.

Operatives recovered 24 ‘jumbo’ bags containing 681 pouches of Canadian Loud and a strain of cannabis weighing 414.2 kilograms during the raid.

Delivering another judgement, Dipeolu convicted and sentenced Akpomuai, 51, to four years’ imprisonment with an option of a N50 million fine.

Akpomuai was arrested on June 3 by customs officers along the Shagamu-Ijebu-Ode expressway with 2,197.8 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis.

Akpomuai was transferred to NDLEA, after which he was arraigned for trafficking illicit drugs in large commercial quantities.

Commenting on the ruling, Buba Marwa, NDLEA chairman, said the conviction of the two drug kingpins indicates that Nigeria will soon surmount the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
