this man you have a lot of opportunity do you know that as a Ph.D. holder your take home will not be more than 500k brother go and rent and apartment start your own school then you employ people to work under you. moreover, what you studies is a hot cake in the market. even me that i work from money till evening did not earn up to you and i get wife, children and parent
Stop saying what you don't know.

PhD is purely research and that does not mean you will start earning 500k or he should open a school

How does having a PhD and opening a school correlate or do you think, it is sand they are using to open schools and ay employees

Hello guys, I humbly need you all view on this. All my life I have always wanted to be a lecturer, so early this year (January, 2025), I finally got awarded PhD in Applied Mathematics. Though I had my first degree in Mechanical Engineering, masters in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics and PhD in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics as well. During my study, I run a tutorial centre and making cool money from teaching mechanical engineering and mathematics students. So after obtaining my PhD I started sending out my CV to people I know in institutions, though most are of the opinion that I shouldn't have switched from mechanical engineering to mathematics that it will give me problem.

Around January 2025, immediately after my PhD oral examination, my supervisor linked me up with the rector of a polytechnic to go submit my CV to him, which I did, and according to the rector, he told me that it is not matter of CV for now, because most people that he employed as assistant lecturers, they really don't have much to pay them and the governor of the state has promised that he will do recruitment for the polytechnic around March because of accreditation processes, so during that recruitment, I can be employed. Fast forward to March, the accreditation went on and I wasn't informed if the recruitment was later done (you know all this underground stuffs), so I later got my mind off the institution and look at for another university in other states which I was promised also that once there is directives to start recruitment, I will be employed.

On the 3rd of july, 2025, I got a call from someone from the polytechnic, telling me to come to the personnel department as soon as possible with my credentials, when I got there, he collected photocopies of my credentials and on sighting the mechanical engineering as first degree, he said which department do I want and I said mathematics and he said why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation, so I said I preferred mathematics because since I switched to mathematics, I have published 11 academic journal with 7 of them Scopus rated in Q1, and I have also attended 7 seminars with certificate to back them up, and I have also been a member of the Nigerian mathematical society (NMS), so he said they will get back to me.

Since then I haven't heard anything. After a month, I made a call to the person that I submitted my credentials to at the personnel department, that I haven't heard from them and he said "sebi we are the one that called you ourself, the process is ongoing and once we are ready, we will definitely call you back". But I haven't heard from them still. It is almost two months now since I submitted the credentials and I am already losing faith.

I am just confused, could my changing from engineering to science be hindering me from getting a lecturing position? If it is, does it make sense to go back and obtain another master and PhD in mechanical engineering and just forget about the mathematics? Or just forget about lecturing and focus on my tutorials, meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area, but I don't want to be a tutor forever, not even with a PhD.
meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area,

If this so what else do you want from us

I think someone like you won't struggle to find employment in the UK, though that will contribute to the current brain drain that Nigeria is currently suffering from and probably won't recover from for a long time. Hate to see Nigeria's talents leave the country.

Great portfolio, and very commendable.
To start with, you did not make any mistakes whatsoever, and I can assure you regarding that job that "Que cera cera"
I implore you to continue with your tutorial until something better comes your way eventually.
Amidst all of these, you have done well for yourself, and still doing well.
Good luck!

I thank God for your life ooo. A lot of people are looking up to you bro. You will soon get your lecturing job. It's just a matter of time. Ask God for the next line of action and let Him guide you.

Even with your PhD in mathematics, you should have stick to Mechanical engineering.
Dr. Gbeminiyi Shobamowo of Mechanical engineering in University of Lagos has most of his publications on application of mathematics in HVAC and by God's grace he'll soon be a professor of Mechanical Engineering. You are on the right track with all your results, and with the fact that most of our research in engineering in this part of the world is more of simulation and mathematical application of the theories, you'll have a lot of journals to publish which will help you in your career. If I were you, I will stick to my engineering background.

You should be able to work in either of the department. When I was at OAU, there were lecturers whose 1st degree was in Physics lecturing at Electrical engineering dept and lecturers whose 1st degree was in Electrical lecturing in Physics.

However, if I were you, I would apply to universities in the US for a 2nd PhD. Even Americans have 2nd PhD so it is not uncommon.

That being said, it's not also uncommon to see engineers educated to MSc level switch careers with an MBA top up in the USA.

My advice is: Get yourself to the US by appling to Phd programs. During your qualifications, ensure you include your current PhD in your applications for a 2nd PhD, you would be hot cake, and multiple profs would want you on their team.

Core sciences like maths, physics and chemistry also receive very few applications because they are difficult subjects. Prof find it hard to fill Phd positions due to unavailable of scholars in those field, so its easier to get into a PhD in those courses than in core engineering.

Bro. If you have interest in moving abroad then you're a hot cake with all these maths qualifications.

USA will give you a teaching Job easily (STEM teachers are wanted)
Same case for UK.

Move if you want to bro.. it's easy with your background

Secondly, why not use this time to setup a permanent, lifelong wealth making opportunity.do you realize that that tutorial that's giving you 500k per month is the same problem students elsewhere is having?
Why not create a key point for sale
Create ebooks for sale
Create YouTube videos
Monetize and wait.

While doing all these, continue applying for jobs. Also, note that you can be an an engineering lecturer and as well as a mathematics lecturer.

Don't limit yourself please.

Lastlast, money maketh a man!
This will make you very replaceabbe, youtube videos is for people who dont need money from teaching

You didn't make any mistake. You have a great profile. Please continue your tutorial path and try to look for ways to improve it to earn more.

Secondly, from your academic profile please don't limit yourself to government jobs, add private schools too and not just that, look for opportunities outside the country. There are other African countries you can try and then the western countries. You just have to make your research

Congratulations on your PhD.
You finished in January so chill. Offers will still come. Your apprehension is exaggerated wink

This is why mentors are necessary. What you lack is great mentors wink

Late UNILAG V.C, Prof Oye Ibidapo-Obe actually switched from Mathematics background to Civil Engineering and he was reputed as a successful Civil Engineer and university administrator. If you read his interviews, he gives generous credits to his mentors in the University of Lagos (UNILAG). So the school you attend and quality of your Lecturers matter too though.

Switching from Mechanical Engineering to Mathematics is quite interesting and you could have done so with guidance of a mentor.

It's not too late to find great mentors though. Look them up on LinkedIn and request to be their mentee.
All the best

You did not make mistakes in choosing your dreamt course or career. Continue with the tutorial tat fetches you money for now, plan to start a school of your own. Later you can chose to be a visiting lecturer in many universities both home and abroad.

Thank you so much sir. But it has never crossed my mind to work in an oil and gas company. I have always been interested in lecturing positions sir. I don't mind relocating to PH if I get an offer for lecturing position there.
Thank you for your passion. You have not made any mistakes, but you should have accepted the Mechanical Engineering position since you are foundationally a Mech Engr.

Mathematics is related to Mech Engine and opportunities could read 'PhD in Mathematics or related disciplines', or 'PhD in Mech. Engine or other related disciplines'

You have a PhD, and it provides limitless opportunities. Evaluate your PhD to foreign standards and start applying for remote lecturing jobs.

You can stay in Nigeria and earn tax-free honorariums teaching remotely in Online Universities based abroad, while still running a business here in Nigeria.

I earned a Medical Doctorate some years ago, I run medical businesses and still work for foreign universities, while earning good dollars. Even as a businessman in Healthcare, I still find time to publish medical articles in journals. I have rejected several job offer from Nigerian universities. I only volunteered for my Professor when he briefly travelled out of the country some years ago.

I have planned to retire in my 40s after setting up a good business system that will earn on auto-pilot..

It did not come cheap. In fact I went to school for almost 32years of my life cummulatively (primary school to Doctorate), working and grinding, and I think it is time to enjoy the fruits of my labours soon.

Your PhD is still fresh, more opportunities will come. But do not limit yourself. The world is a global village now. You can go abroad to lecture, you can also do it remotely or hybrid.

You can easily turn that your tutorial to a School.
Most notable schools in my area started with tutorials.
You haven't made a mistake, continue pursuing that lecturing jobs with your PhD and you'll get it very soon.

From your write up, you stated you earnapprox. #500k every month. How much does a University lecturer earn, albeit one in the Polytechnic. You have a PhD already and a promising centre building lives and making impact. You are already woking in an academic environment and should be aiming towards building your own school, using that turorial centre as a springboard.

You can also include services such as WAEC, GCE and JAMB preparation to your portfolio and begin to employ other hands.
You haven't made any mistake, you are just not seeing the bright picture of what you are already doing.

oga you are greedy oo. If you make more than 500k for tutorial coaching why do you need a lecturing job for

Are you sure you are serious at all?

You shot yourself on the leg when you were asked on lecturing in mechanical engineering and you declined. That person asked possibly because there were lore opening in that field. One thing about teaching is that you need to be flexible. You should have accepted to lecture in mechanical engineering and subsequently, when you gain grounds, you can always diversify to lecture math-based courses.

.
I agree with u
Moreover his combination of engineering & mathematics would have made him a perfect match to lecture engineering mathematics in any of the engineering departments in any university or polytechnic. Not every lecturer in engineering majored in engineering after first degree. Most of the engineering courses are rooted in maths & physics.

Thank you for this.

Firstly, I want you to know that last last money is the reason why we do all what we do!
