Many people are not familiar with the stereotypes in our academia. You won't understand until you get in. With your background. You are a mechanical engineer in Nigerian academic environment and not a mathematician. Even the fluid Mechanics you specialized in is an option under mechanical engineering. You will never be regarded as a mathematician as applied mathematics is limited when compared to all aspects of pure mathematics (data science/financial mathematics, statistics, actuaries, mathematical modelling, Numerical/Complex analysis, programming etc) . With your specialization, they see you more like a mathematical physicist .Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you're not a mathematician and can't lecture any mathematics course. In fact, you will be taught almost all aspects of mathematics while study mechanical engineering at your first degree. It is just what it is in Nigeria. In Nigerian academia, your first degree matters a lot and will determine how you are regarded/treated. It's easier for someone who studied mathematics or physics to switch to engineering because they believe the Engineering PGD will remedy the deficiencies before the person enroll for masters. You are better off applying in mechanical engineering departments. Did you make any mistake? No . That is just the situation. PS: I studied Mechanical Engineering too. |

Analog95:All because a guy from a polytechnic with no clue about your field is not interested in hiring you? Listen, you may think you know what you want like many claim. Next time keep your options open. Yes, I can fit into any of the two departments! Yes, I am open to relocating and utilizing my skills in solving real world problems in a corporate or research setting. Besides, you need some industry experience to be grounded as a lecturer. This is 2025. Drop your email. |

Two months is too early to give up on government job in Nigeria. The processes of government employment in the country take long. Some take as long as a year. So, I'll advise you don't give up yet on the polytechnic job yet |

I tried to read your message then to give you a way out. Firstly, the lecturer asked you why you did not pick a department in Engineer. This could be that the qualification for the role is MSc and you are talking about having PhD and many publication in Mathematics meanwhile you are a perfect candidate for a MSc role if you didn't use your PhD (Assistant Lecturer). Your qualifications are good and you seems to do good in maths, why not self learn how to trade Stock and Forex. You will perform better than most people. |

I think you should have patience. Apply aggressively to many institutions why you continue your hustle but have patience. Phd in mathematics is great esp majoring in fluid dynamics. If you coukd travel to the US or Canada and get a lecturing or research position, would be great Analog95: |

You are already accomplished but looking to be enslaved with the title of accomplishment. My friend you need to sit back, reflect & design a plan how you can become a great builder/founder instead of trying to prove nothing to anyone. |

You have to learn to work with these government work people. Aka No dey intimidate your helper. Next time play yourself down. Especially in Nigeria/Africa. It is better to be looked down upon than to be seen as a shine-stealer. They will poison you. Your mouth caused it. I don’t think you’re fit to work in that system. I think you’re better suited as an entrepreneur because you can’t keep your mouth shut about how good you are. I say this in love. But it is true. Analog95: |

I think you are already a lecturer. Just break free from the mentality of being employed is a degree awarding institution before you see yourself as a lecturer. Many advices have been given above |

When i read comments sometimes i wonder if I'm in thesame Nigeria as you guys, so I just I just the one that like how person will you take make 500,000 naira say be tutor tutorial teacher if they make 500k and they look for work for Polytechnic how much did they pay lecturers in Polytechnic, so if he's getting 500,000 naira every month approximately to me it's better for him than to go and be working under one Polytechnic or even university or whatever it is or even traveling abroad because you no sure for now if you travel abroad go make sense. broadening his teaching by creating YouTube videos, more books online can boost his retirement package. He's the boss of his boss |

Analog95:1. See how the guy was even suggesting basic (compared to your level) stuff for you. 2. Do you even know who you are? You have all this and you are still thinking like a fresh graduate when you should be the one employing teachers and lecturers. You dey shame me oh. |

I agree with you. While in Yabatech we had a lecturer taking 2 courses of same department. Some are even lecturing in more than one school Juliearth: |

As it is right now, it will only make sense if you go get a master degree in mechanical engineering while doing your tutorial and waiting for opportunities. If you are able to get this, you will be relevant to both engineering and mathematics department in any higher institutions. |

Bookworm, people have spoken, let me just echo their thoughts. Oga seek for opportunities abroad, either remotely or even relocation. You are a hot akara in so many countries. Given your love of research, you can easily get a fully paid post doc. Your challenge is that of association. You are not moving with people who know about international opportunities hence being frustrated by local opportunities that are beneath you and will most likely frustrate your career. Do your research on LinkedIn or even on the career section of Nairaland. Let people guide you appropriately. Best of good luck. I'm waiting for your testimony. |

seguntijan:This guy you just mentioned was a senior colleague at the polytechnic Ibadan in the department of Mechanical engineer. Guy is so so so good in engineering calculations. We used fo look upto him for tutorials. And he was so humble. The name clicked as you mentioned it. I am so happy he will soon become a prof. He shoudl be in his mid 40s by now. Wow, so happy for him. |

Analog95:Oga, you’re always the one shooting yourself at the right leg. Your problem is myopic mindset. Sorry if am being harsh. Someone gave you an opportunity in Oil and Gas and never mentioned any specific role but you’re already boxing yourself into lecturing again ! If he then tell you it’s not lecturing job he has and that whenever he gets one he will contact you , you will start whining again that you don’t know how you miss opportunities. Have an open mind and be ready to leverage any high paying opportunities as long as it’s related to your field. Passion don’t pay bill, quality of value demanded and ability to offer such value does. |

Boomyvig:He is a PhD and has the right to choose what he wants. I was offered myriad of jobs, when I finished my Master's degree (including the Oil Sector). I turned it down to go for PhD. Cut off unwanted ties and buried my head in medical research. Finished my Doctorate in 3 years (the fastest ever in my Faculty). Then started applying online to many Universities open to remote Lecturers. I got one in the USA within 6 months. And have been earning in FOREX when USD was just about N700 per $. I don't even touch the money, as I run medical centers and other healthcare businesses. I see at as 'retirement money/pension'. Stashed away for the next 15- 20 years. I am that patient. The OP has a lot going for him, he is a high flier, but must stick to what he wants and be patient. |
