Many people are not familiar with the stereotypes in our academia. You won't understand until you get in. With your background. You are a mechanical engineer in Nigerian academic environment and not a mathematician. Even the fluid Mechanics you specialized in is an option under mechanical engineering. You will never be regarded as a mathematician as applied mathematics is limited when compared to all aspects of pure mathematics (data science/financial mathematics, statistics, actuaries, mathematical modelling, Numerical/Complex analysis, programming etc) . With your specialization, they see you more like a mathematical physicist grin.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you're not a mathematician and can't lecture any mathematics course. In fact, you will be taught almost all aspects of mathematics while study mechanical engineering at your first degree. It is just what it is in Nigeria.

In Nigerian academia, your first degree matters a lot and will determine how you are regarded/treated. It's easier for someone who studied mathematics or physics to switch to engineering because they believe the Engineering PGD will remedy the deficiencies before the person enroll for masters.

You are better off applying in mechanical engineering departments.

Did you make any mistake? No . That is just the situation.

PS: I studied Mechanical Engineering too.

Hello guys, I humbly need you all view on this. All my life I have always wanted to be a lecturer, so early this year (January, 2025), I finally got awarded PhD in Applied Mathematics. Though I had my first degree in Mechanical Engineering, masters in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics and PhD in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics as well. During my study, I run a tutorial centre and making cool money from teaching mechanical engineering and mathematics students. So after obtaining my PhD I started sending out my CV to people I know in institutions, though most are of the opinion that I shouldn't have switched from mechanical engineering to mathematics that it will give me problem.

Around January 2025, immediately after my PhD oral examination, my supervisor linked me up with the rector of a polytechnic to go submit my CV to him, which I did, and according to the rector, he told me that it is not matter of CV for now, because most people that he employed as assistant lecturers, they really don't have much to pay them and the governor of the state has promised that he will do recruitment for the polytechnic around March because of accreditation processes, so during that recruitment, I can be employed. Fast forward to March, the accreditation went on and I wasn't informed if the recruitment was later done (you know all this underground stuffs), so I later got my mind off the institution and look at for another university in other states which I was promised also that once there is directives to start recruitment, I will be employed.

On the 3rd of july, 2025, I got a call from someone from the polytechnic, telling me to come to the personnel department as soon as possible with my credentials, when I got there, he collected photocopies of my credentials and on sighting the mechanical engineering as first degree, he said which department do I want and I said mathematics and he said why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation, so I said I preferred mathematics because since I switched to mathematics, I have published 11 academic journal with 7 of them Scopus rated in Q1, and I have also attended 7 seminars with certificate to back them up, and I have also been a member of the Nigerian mathematical society (NMS), so he said they will get back to me.

Since then I haven't heard anything. After a month, I made a call to the person that I submitted my credentials to at the personnel department, that I haven't heard from them and he said "sebi we are the one that called you ourself, the process is ongoing and once we are ready, we will definitely call you back". But I haven't heard from them still. It is almost two months now since I submitted the credentials and I am already losing faith.

I am just confused, could my changing from engineering to science be hindering me from getting a lecturing position? If it is, does it make sense to go back and obtain another master and PhD in mechanical engineering and just forget about the mathematics? Or just forget about lecturing and focus on my tutorials, meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area, but I don't want to be a tutor forever, not even with a PhD.
All because a guy from a polytechnic with no clue about your field is not interested in hiring you?
Listen, you may think you know what you want like many claim. Next time keep your options open.
Yes, I can fit into any of the two departments!
Yes, I am open to relocating and utilizing my skills in solving real world problems in a corporate or research setting.
Besides, you need some industry experience to be grounded as a lecturer. This is 2025.
Drop your email.

Two months is too early to give up on government job in Nigeria. The processes of government employment in the country take long. Some take as long as a year. So, I'll advise you don't give up yet on the polytechnic job yet

@the bolden; what else are you looking for in life, is the major essence of going to school not to make a living for ourselves?... Why need a job when you have an empire, you could build your own school from there.

I tried to read your message then to give you a way out. Firstly, the lecturer asked you why you did not pick a department in Engineer. This could be that the qualification for the role is MSc and you are talking about having PhD and many publication in Mathematics meanwhile you are a perfect candidate for a MSc role if you didn't use your PhD (Assistant Lecturer).

Your qualifications are good and you seems to do good in maths, why not self learn how to trade Stock and Forex. You will perform better than most people.

I think you should have patience. Apply aggressively to many institutions why you continue your hustle but have patience.

Phd in mathematics is great esp majoring in fluid dynamics. If you coukd travel to the US or Canada and get a lecturing or research position, would be great

You have not made any mistakes. You even have double chance of getting employed: engineering or mathematics, which is an added advantage.

You can submit your CV to private institutions while you await that of government.

You will find out that your monthly pay as a university or polytechnic lecturer might not be up to the 500k you make from the tutorials. But from what you wrote, I can understand that you have the flair for teaching not just for the money but for the love you have for the job.

Especially in Nigeria/Africa. It is better to be looked down upon than to be seen as a shine-stealer. They will poison you.

I don’t think you’re fit to work in that system. I think you’re better suited as an entrepreneur because you can’t keep your mouth shut about how good you are.

When i read comments sometimes i wonder if I'm in thesame Nigeria as you guys, so I just I just the one that like how person will you take make 500,000 naira say be tutor tutorial teacher if they make 500k and they look for work for Polytechnic how much did they pay lecturers in Polytechnic, so if he's getting 500,000 naira every month approximately to me it's better for him than to go and be working under one Polytechnic or even university or whatever it is or even traveling abroad because you no sure for now if you travel abroad go make sense. broadening his teaching by creating YouTube videos, more books online can boost his retirement package. The only problem I see is you thinking so little of yourself and not being patient. You are a PhD holder, it is only a matter of time before you get settled in, career-wise.

You shot yourself on the leg when you were asked on lecturing in mechanical engineering and you declined. That person asked possibly because there were lore opening in that field. One thing about teaching is that you need to be flexible. You should have accepted to lecture in mechanical engineering and subsequently, when you gain grounds, you can always diversify to lecture math-based courses.

I'll advise you to follow up on the job. Do well to assure your liaison person that your versatility cuts across mechanical engineering as much as it does maths. I would also advise that you spread your wings. You may be sulking over peanuts even a whole peanut plantation awaits you ahead.

I wish you all the best! I would appreciate it if you could keep me informed about any potential lecturing job openings.

As it is right now, it will only make sense if you go get a master degree in mechanical engineering while doing your tutorial and waiting for opportunities. If you are able to get this, you will be relevant to both engineering and mathematics department in any higher institutions.

Bookworm, people have spoken, let me just echo their thoughts.

Oga seek for opportunities abroad, either remotely or even relocation.

You are a hot akara in so many countries. Given your love of research, you can easily get a fully paid post doc.

Your challenge is that of association. You are not moving with people who know about international opportunities hence being frustrated by local opportunities that are beneath you and will most likely frustrate your career.

Do your research on LinkedIn or even on the career section of Nairaland. Let people guide you appropriately.

Best of good luck. I'm waiting for your testimony.

Even with your PhD in mathematics, you should have stick to Mechanical engineering.
Dr. Gbeminiyi Shobamowo of Mechanical engineering in University of Lagos has most of his publications on application of mathematics in HVAC and by God's grace he'll soon be a professor of Mechanical Engineering. You are on the right track with all your results, and with the fact that most of our research in engineering in this part of the world is more of simulation and mathematical application of the theories, you'll have a lot of journals to publish which will help you in your career. If I were you, I will stick to my engineering background.
This guy you just mentioned was a senior colleague at the polytechnic Ibadan in the department of Mechanical engineer.
Guy is so so so good in engineering calculations. We used fo look upto him for tutorials. And he was so humble.

Thank you so much sir. But it has never crossed my mind to work in an oil and gas company. I have always been interested in lecturing positions sir. I don't mind relocating to PH if I get an offer for lecturing position there.
Oga, you’re always the one shooting yourself at the right leg. Your problem is myopic mindset. Sorry if am being harsh. Someone gave you an opportunity in Oil and Gas and never mentioned any specific role but you’re already boxing yourself into lecturing again !

If he then tell you it’s not lecturing job he has and that whenever he gets one he will contact you , you will start whining again that you don’t know how you miss opportunities.

Have an open mind and be ready to leverage any high paying opportunities as long as it’s related to your field.

Passion don’t pay bill, quality of value demanded and ability to offer such value does.

He is a PhD and has the right to choose what he wants.

I was offered myriad of jobs, when I finished my Master's degree (including the Oil Sector). I turned it down to go for PhD. Cut off unwanted ties and buried my head in medical research.
Finished my Doctorate in 3 years (the fastest ever in my Faculty).

Then started applying online to many Universities open to remote Lecturers. I got one in the USA within 6 months. And have been earning in FOREX when USD was just about N700 per $. I don't even touch the money, as I run medical centers and other healthcare businesses.

I see at as 'retirement money/pension'. Stashed away for the next 15- 20 years. I am that patient.

The OP has a lot going for him, he is a high flier, but must stick to what he wants and be patient.
