Omo. I greet you Sir, esteemed Scholar.

Hello guys, I humbly need you all view on this. All my life I have always wanted to be a lecturer, so early this year (January, 2025), I finally got awarded PhD in Applied Mathematics. Though I had my first degree in Mechanical Engineering, masters in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics and PhD in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics as well. During my study, I run a tutorial centre and making cool money from teaching mechanical engineering and mathematics students. So after obtaining my PhD I started sending out my CV to people I know in institutions, though most are of the opinion that I shouldn't have switched from mechanical engineering to mathematics that it will give me problem.

Around January 2025, immediately after my PhD oral examination, my supervisor linked me up with the rector of a polytechnic to go submit my CV to him, which I did, and according to the rector, he told me that it is not matter of CV for now, because most people that he employed as assistant lecturers, they really don't have much to pay them and the governor of the state has promised that he will do recruitment for the polytechnic around March because of accreditation processes, so during that recruitment, I can be employed. Fast forward to March, the accreditation went on and I wasn't informed if the recruitment was later done (you know all this underground stuffs), so I later got my mind off the institution and look at for another university in other states which I was promised also that once there is directives to start recruitment, I will be employed.

On the 3rd of july, 2025, I got a call from someone from the polytechnic, telling me to come to the personnel department as soon as possible with my credentials, when I got there, he collected photocopies of my credentials and on sighting the mechanical engineering as first degree, he said which department do I want and I said mathematics and he said why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation, so I said I preferred mathematics because since I switched to mathematics, I have published 11 academic journal with 7 of them Scopus rated in Q1, and I have also attended 7 seminars with certificate to back them up, and I have also been a member of the Nigerian mathematical society (NMS), so he said they will get back to me.

Since then I haven't heard anything. After a month, I made a call to the person that I submitted my credentials to at the personnel department, that I haven't heard from them and he said "sebi we are the one that called you ourself, the process is ongoing and once we are ready, we will definitely call you back". But I haven't heard from them still. It is almost two months now since I submitted the credentials and I am already losing faith.

I am just confused, could my changing from engineering to science be hindering me from getting a lecturing position? If it is, does it make sense to go back and obtain another master and PhD in mechanical engineering and just forget about the mathematics? Or just forget about lecturing and focus on my tutorials, meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area, but I don't want to be a tutor forever, not even with a PhD.

I will give you this advice based on what the NBTE requirements say about recruitment.

First degree is a major concern in Polytechnic education. They may not be able to employ you in their Mathematics department/general studies, as your credentials may not have substantial influence in their accreditation exercise.

Are you kidding me? huh
You have a whole PhD in Applied Mathematics, and you're sounding this way?

If this is not a cooked up story, I would advice that you seriously consider seeking opportunities abroad.
Contact a travel content creator called Waka-waka doctor, and you'll be out of this country in a bit.

Alternatively, apply to all Federal and State universities in Nigeria unsolicited. The outcome will surprise you.

Also, you can consider applying to universities in countries within Africa.

The other part of the writings, my opinion on it would be very lengthy and -maybe- alternative, but to comment on this quoted part, you don't have to do masters again. Just PhD direct is definitely possible, sufficient and enough.
Given all what you have written down & explained.

I like your profile & in most other developed countries, you’d have massive advantages! How about do even better - start your own school by putting your own school and teaching materials online on your own platform and monetize it. You will be able to teach not only students in Nigeria but literally across the world. Start your education platform small and in a few years even the people who doubted you would apply to your online education school to be hired and you can run it from almost anywhere! DM me for more info if you want to explore these ideas further.

You have not made a mistake... You don't just have the right opportunity yet.

Don't put yourself under undue pressure since you have your tutorial center that makes you some money. Be patient and take your time, the right job will come.

I commend the fact that you're willing to chase your passion nd dream of becoming a lecturer.

By the way, you're very brilliant... Have considered working in the Oil and Gas industry and will you be willing to relocate to PH?
I believe this is a post for an engineer but I’d just humbly shoot my shot , could there be an available role for an accountant in ph, I’d be interested.

Many people are not familiar with the stereotypes in our academia. You won't understand until you get in. With your background. You are a mechanical engineer in Nigerian academic environment and not a mathematician. Even the fluid Mechanics you specialized in is an option under mechanical engineering. You will never be regarded as a mathematician as applied mathematics is limited when compared to all aspects of pure mathematics (data science/financial mathematics, statistics, actuaries, mathematical modelling, Numerical/Complex analysis, programming etc) . With your specialization, they see you more like a mathematical physicist grin.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you're not a mathematician and can't lecture any mathematics course. In fact, you will be taught almost all aspects of mathematics while study mechanical engineering at your first degree. It is just what it is in Nigeria.

In Nigerian academia, your first degree matters a lot and will determine how you are regarded/treated. It's easier for someone who studied mathematics or physics to switch to engineering because they believe the Engineering PGD will remedy the deficiencies before the person enroll for masters.

You are better off applying in mechanical engineering departments.

Did you make any mistake? No . That is just the situation.

PS: I studied Mechanical Engineering too.
Here's the bitter truth. You took these words from my mouth

You should be able to work in either of the department. When I was at OAU, there were lecturers whose 1st degree was in Physics lecturing at Electrical engineering dept and lecturers whose 1st degree was in Electrical lecturing in Physics.

However, if I were you, I would apply to universities in the US for a 2nd PhD. Even Americans have 2nd PhD so it is not uncommon.

That being said, it's not also uncommon to see engineers educated to MSc level switch careers with an MBA top up in the USA.

My advice is: Get yourself to the US by appling to Phd programs. During your qualifications, ensure you include your current PhD in your applications for a 2nd PhD, you would be hot cake, and multiple profs would want you on their team.

Core sciences like maths, physics and chemistry also receive very few applications because they are difficult subjects. Prof find it hard to fill Phd positions due to unavailable of scholars in those field, so its easier to get into a PhD in those courses than in core engineering.
Does he look like someone who wants to travel? No offense, bro.
You could read he was asked to come and work in oil & gas in PH but he was still asking if it’s a lecturing job.
Leave him. Let him go and see wetin no dey make fowls pee, for lecturing.
No be talent e wan go display and opportunity to dey see free opue?
He must have been inspired by someone from his lineage or by a teacher, to be a lecturer.

After some year, he would build usual bungalow and buy usual Toyota brands his senior colleagues and mentors have always bought.

Oga, you’re always the one shooting yourself at the right leg. Your problem is myopic mindset. Sorry if am being harsh. Someone gave you an opportunity in Oil and Gas and never mentioned any specific role but you’re already boxing yourself into lecturing again !

If he then tell you it’s not lecturing job he has and that whenever he gets one he will contact you , you will start whining again that you don’t know how you miss opportunities.

Have an open mind and be ready to leverage any high paying opportunities as long as it’s related to your field.

Passion don’t pay bill, quality of value demanded and ability to offer such value does.

I agree with you. While in Yabatech we had a lecturer taking 2 courses of same department. Some are even lecturing in more than one school
Yes, such instances are common. I had a lecturer who studied statistics, but ended up lecturing programming. According to him, when he was employed, he noticed the gap in computer science and so he took courses to learn programming at basic level and advanced subsequently. Today, he is the best when it comes to coding.

I agree with u
Moreover his combination of engineering & mathematics would have made him a perfect match to lecture engineering mathematics in any of the engineering departments in any university or polytechnic. Not every lecturer in engineering majored in engineering after first degree. Most of the engineering courses are rooted in maths & physics.
I share in thus sentiment, likewise. Being good in both worlds is a great plus for him. He would be useful in Engineering, Computer Science and maths departments.

Most universities will prefer to hire people whose first degree match with the department they intend to lecture in. It's like a general practice in Nigeria. If you really want to get lecturing job quickly, it will be easier with your first degree.

You are even lucky to be grabbing up to 500k monthly. How much is the salary of Professors currently? Of a truth, u have already attained a very great height in the academic sector of life. Just continue running ur tutorials even as u wait for the Job u are targeting. Also, it's better to opt for universities and not polytechnics, where ur chance of being a Prof is not assured.

Sir, for you to understand mathematics and engineering really well to the point of switching seamlessly and even getting a PhD. I think you should think about the above suggestion at for now while you look for openings in both Nigeria University and abroad
Why not create a key point for sale
Create ebooks for sale
Create YouTube videos
Monetize and wait.

While doing all these, continue applying for jobs. Also, note that you can be an an engineering lecturer and as well as a mathematics lecturer.

Don't limit yourself please.

Greeting Dr, i have seen people who secured lecturing job even when they switch discipline, but its often easier when you maintain your first degree to third one (PhD) instead of having to go through the rigor of earning another M.Sc and PhD in Engineering, apply for a direct entry to bag a B.Sc in Mathematics since you already have a second and third degree in the field, still be patient you will be employed by the best dream job (Federal Uni).
To those seeking higher degree in another field, i usually discourage them not to, am a lecturer In a Federal Uni. regards

apologies for attacking you but business also come with cost

for instance if someone says he is making 500k from tutorials, the person didnt say if it was profit or not. and if it is monthly or not.

Running a business also come with lot of cost.

since you have passion for teaching and learning instead of you to allow something to demoralize you. create more awareness for the lesson you are doing once people are seen the result of your teaching more people will enrol from them. you get more money to rent an apartment use plywood to demarcate it and see how to register then sky is your limit, but all this require patience and commitment. i will give you more insight when am back busy now

Guy you dey vex me abeg. You are a PhD holder and you want to be shackled at a spot. Spread your tents. Do you know about Canada Express Entry? You are well qualified to get nice score and get a permanent resident. My neighbor did just 1st degree in Engineering at Nigeria, just last two months, he landed a job in a mechanical engineering company here earning over $120,000....
