What I can deduce is that a good number of people badmouthing the teaching profession fall under one or more of these categories: 1. Mediocres with poor grades from a degree they don't even know anything about because they were busy with some shenanigans while they were supposed to be in school. 2. Brilliant an talented teachers who have failed to upskill. 3. Brilliant and talented teachers who are under informed regarding modern trends in classroom teaching and learning etc. Trust me, teaching jobs are paying quite well now, if only many of you are informed. You can't have 21st century teaching skills and being earning 30 - 100k unless village people dey your case. There are private schools that pay well above whatever Government schools offer. There are schools that pay between 200 - 600k and even above, though not too many. My advice to teachers is upskill, be tech savvy and learn to integrate it in your art. Get IGCSE and such other certifications for your subject area. Get familiar with the several gamification sites that enhance your job experience. Dump those broke ass schools with inhumane proprietors. Seek out quality international schools and sell yourself.. You will get a fairly good bargain, though the value of our naira is another issue. Let me add; have you tried applying as an examiner for Cambridge? People dey cash out daily from teaching; many of Una dey here dey lament. Get informed and get the dough. |

Biofil84:If you have family, friends , etc based in UK or US, just tell them to refer you to anyone that needs a tutor for their child. If you are fortunate to be referred to one person or you have a client outside, rule 1: Don't engage in unnecessary conversation with the kids you are teaching or asking them questions about their families. Trust me, there's a camera and speaker hearing all what you are discussing with the kids. 2. Don't start asking the parents about how to Japa. Just a few tips for you. Once they are comfortable with you working with their kids, they will be the one to refer more clients to you. Also be ready to subscribe to unlimited zoom and get a laptop and a drawing tablet |

This matter is somewhat related. I am preparing for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and am among those registered, eagerly awaiting my call-up number. I face two choices regarding where to carry out my service: the first option is to serve in Kaduna, my state of residence, potentially securing employment with a reputable company offering modest compensation. The second option is to serve wherever the NYSC assigns me. While I am eager to travel and broaden my experiences, the prospect of being sent to teach in a remote Nigerian school and navigating the challenges of daily life there is daunting. Conversely, serving in the place where I was born and raised, though cost-effective in terms of accommodation and transportation, lacks appeal, leaving me perplexed and uncertain about the best course of action. I wonder if I might receive some sound advice here. |

Truvelisback:On the contrary, male teachers on average earn more than female teachers because they work longer hours and teach more lucrative subjects. If you must be a teacher, get the required skill set and teach lucrative subjects. There are male teachers who earn decently. |

ediko5:You need not tell the guy he's shallow minded! Not everyone actually knows that some challenges could be opportunities in disguise many times. Tho, the ability to look around, look inwards and look beyond most times is the reason some are still not making headway. But one just needs to expose them to these opportunities which they might not even be thinking about...and some of them actually have the potential to do very well in their respective field and in those jobs which they thought could not get them anywhere. As a teacher in Nigeria today, if you are very good and know how to go about marketing yourself, exploring the power of social media and AI, you will make good money! |

Mickey02:I think you should go with the option of serving wherever you're posted. You already know what's obtainable in your home state and you know what you're capable of achieving there. However, going out of your region and comfort zone gives you some experience you might miss out on if you're home. Even if you have to come back to your home state after your service, go out there, get the experience, and who knows, you might end up learning something very valuable that will turn your life around while serving. The home advantage will always be home waiting for you. This is my own suggestion tho, seek further guidance for validation or diverse opinion before you take a decision. All the best! |

One of wildest thing is for a guy teaching in a private school with loads of responsibilities and low payment 😄 I remember being a class teacher, maths teacher, basic technology teacher, geography teacher and other extra curriculum tutor from Monday to Saturday while I was earning 25k Different kinda insults from the parents and the owner of the school……… that was such an experience I never want to remember I honestly do feel for those private schools teacher…… they are more like a slave |

Hardeybohwarley:If you can teach ODE, Complex analysis and vector Calulus, download the new CCMAS curriculum for undergraduate students and teach these courses online. Also include a playlist for WAEC and JAMB mathematics. Gather past questions of different universities and solve them online So many students will be watching your videos online and you will be making cool cash online with time |

Best decision I made. I was earning 25k before Covid era. Outside meeting brilliant and beautiful people and also the joy of impacting knowledge, there’s no punishment like private school teaching. Even the ones earning better pay knows the schools have lots of rules that a person can’t keep up with. And any small mistakes leads to surcharge. You’ll just be making money for the school. You’ll think you’re free, that you’ve got time but note of lesson, register and exam marking will take all the time you think you have. You’ll find out that you’re writing notes well into the night. The proprietors give little and expect much. Really much. They delay payment, abuse and even talk to teachers disrespectfully even in the presence of the kids. Some teachers can’t really explain what they go through as teachers. The brain drain is real. Some parents act like they’re doing you a favor and they act like you’re just begging them for money. Very few parents really appreciate “MALE” teachers. Some students will frustrate your career with disrespect and lots of nonsense. You’ll have to work according to the students pace. Some students are actually fast learners and others are slow learners and the proprietor will want you to carry the slow learners along while still covering the curriculum. It is really stressful. Nowadays if I’m passing any private school, I just shake my head and whisper God forbid. Thank God I escape that era. |

AguluLiar:Who told you am complaining. I am only sharing my experience like 14 years ago. During this time everything we do was go to cyber cafe and the newspaper vendor to look for job vacancy. The teaching job was a stopgap. As a father whenever I visit my children during their open days beside pointing out areas of improvement and concern I make sure I show empathy on my side. For the OP truly assertion, I don't encouraged elementary or secondary school teaching job for any young man you can't achieve much and do basic things that one ought to do. Thank God for this era of online teaching opportunities like Google classroom which I once used during my post physical teaching experience to teach engineering drawings for the maintenance team of an organisation in Nigeria. Now we have YouTube, Facebook, etc the teachers can now begin to explore those opportunities. My cousin that move to Canada is paying a whole lot for online class for his kids. |
