That's interesting. How long did it take your Bush mango to begin fruiting? I'm interested about the bush mango particularly, and what species did you plant, is it hybrid seedlings or grafted?
The bush mango is yet to start fruiting. I was told it's hybrid seedlings I got and it's supposed to start fruiting in 3 years. I think this is it's 3rd year. I have just 2 stands. One has really grown vigorously and I won't be surprised if it starts flowering or fruiting this year or next. But the other one is not growing so well.

This is lovely to read and view. I am beginning to fall in love with farming too. I have little garden at backyard am nursing pepper and tomatoes stocked in bags.

The fear of snakes won't allow me to explore more. Like planting of plantain or banana.

grin

I have been enjoying my pepper (rodo) for few months now and still fruiting wella .

The tomatoes are just coming up with flowers while some keep dying. I normally replace the dead ones immediately with the nursery.
I can't get manure easily.

Bros, you are doing a lot at the same time.

Why not scale up a specific area?

My inspiration to go in to farming came from reading several farming success stories on nairaland.com. I also fancied the idea of growing my own food and being in control of the quality of some or most of the food I eat.

While I was still brooding over these ideas, I had a health challenge that necessitated a change of lifestyle. The nature of main career is such that I often spend extremely long hours sitting in one place and I was advised to include exercising as a major part of my lifestyle. Unfortunately, regular exercising seems to be a chore for me. I’d bought 2 simple gym gadgets but could only use them in the initial few days after purchase. I later bought a bicycle hoping that one will be more interesting, but only rode it once and abandoned it. The only standard form of sport I could have enough interest in is table tennis (I don’t play football), but finding a partner to play with is often a problem. When I’m free, the few friends I can play with may not be free and vice versa.

Along the line I considered that an easier way would be to have my exercise driven by passion, I realized that farming activities would be more interesting for me. Doing farm work and seeing beautiful results from them is motivating for me. This gave me more drive to go into farming. And ever since even when I have people to assist, I also personally get involved and engage in activities like tilling, digging, planting, fertilizer application, even clearing and weeding. These engagements fulfill my exercising needs and have seriously improved my health and overall wellbeing.

The big picture is to run an integrated farm with livestock like pigs, goats, broilers, layers, turkey and fish while also cultivating plantain and vegetables.
Brother I am interested in the bicycle as my farm is a little far. Can I get it pls.

Your farm looks well organised and neat.

It's obvious an organised mind was responsible. It's also clear you've spent quite a bit of money.

I like the fact that you are learning and figuring things out as you go.

After just about 3 months I had to get another worker who was better hardworking but doesn’t follow instructions. I never saw any sign of stealing from this one but without supervision he’s not likely to follow laid down instructions. He seemed to believe that the instructions were unnecessary stress that made no difference. I believe level of education and IQ played a role here.

1. Staking posts
2. Growing cucumbers with trailing hands
3. Staked cucumbers
4. Mature cucumbers ready to fruit
Mm!
Your farm is thriving, both plants and animals.
Your hands are blessed.🤲🏼

Also, you were being modest by saying "little".

Yes that is what I'm trying to do now.

Most of those were experiments to figure out what works for me. If you follow the thread you will notice that some of those pictures are from as far back as 2017 and several of the areas had been dropped. I'm still restructuring and strategizing. The turkey will be dropped this year.

Continuation on the pepper farming.

1. Habanero pepper farm in the field
2. The pepper under a february dry weather.
3. & 4. Fruiting habanero pepper

Re: My Little Farming Adventure In Picutures by safarifarms(op): 11:07pm On Aug 22, 2025
1. Harvest
2. Harvest for the main buyer I had who preferred pure green mature pepper.
3. & 4. More harvests of the 2 main kinds of pepper I planted (Shombo & habanero).

Re: My Little Farming Adventure In Picutures by safarifarms(op): 11:10pm On Aug 22, 2025
If you read my earlier post on the pepper nursery, you'll see I mentioned that the shombo was from extracted seeds. It so happened that the shombo I got must have been hybrid seeds. The end result was 4 different varieties of pepper in the field. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the 4th variety which was more stanty number of stands. The shombo type were the most outcome but I also had the other 2 in good numbers.

I also explored bell pepper (extracted seeds) & garden egg

1. Bell pepper
2 to 4: Garden egg

Nairaland won't attach the pictures. Looks like I've exhausted the quota again.
Will continue some other day.

Have you tried to reduce labour cost by placing plastic mulch and using drip tape?

U are a good farmer. Next time when u encounter disease and infection on your cucumber try as much possible to fumigate it. Also for the pumpkin seed, I'll like to purchase some seeds from u for u.

I didn't use those because of resource limitations at the time. However, I've made up my mind that I must use drip tape when next I venture into those veggies.

Commercial cucumber farming goes along with regular applications of pesticides and fungicides. But there are diseases that defy fumigation like viral diseases. The major issue with the disease that spots the fruit is that I couldn't identify it neither have I found anyone able to do so.
