Obi Laments Spending N142bn On Bus Terminals While Health Sector Gets Less by BlackViper(op): 7:22am On Aug 23, 2025
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, says the federal government’s plan to spend N142 billion on bus terminals is further proof of “misplaced priorities.”

On August 14, the federal executive council (FEC) approved N142.02 billion for the construction of ultra-modern bus terminals across the six geopolitical zones.

Sa’idu Alkali, minister of transportation, described the project as the “first direct federal government investment” aimed at transport infrastructure outside of road construction.

Alkali added that the initiative was conceived by the ministry of transportation to boost safety, improve passenger comfort, and support economic activities.

Reacting on Friday, Obi faulted the decision, noting that it reflects “poor judgment and lack of leadership focus.”

The former Anambra governor compared the allocation to the health sector, noting that the combined budget of all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres in the country is less than N100 billion in the 2024 budget.

“The difference between the success and failure of development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources,” the post reads.

“The recent announcement that a sum of ₦142 billion has been approved by the federal government for the construction of one bus terminal in each of our six geopolitical zones further affirms the lack of competence, lack of focus, and poor leadership.

“In the 2024 budget, which is the operational budget today, the entire budget of all the teaching hospitals across all the federal universities in the country, as well as the federal psychiatric centres, is under ₦100 billion, yet the government has approved ₦142 billion for bus terminals.

“This is disturbing, considering that health is one of the most critical areas of development, which is deteriorating and remains grossly underfunded.

“WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues.”

Obi also described the move as a “tragic irony” that highlights the government’s failure to prioritise essential services.

The same thing happening in Enugu State. Smart school in every political ward instead of equipping already existing schools in every community or town. Bus terminals when the state is known for life-threatening scarcity of water in dry seasons.

The same thing that happened in Ebonyi State. Standard of living got worse after the celebrations of flyovers and an airport.

A shame Peter Obi couldn't reference his own time as governor in Anambra state to show the Federal Government how it should be done.

A time where, despite having no Local government elections, so we are not sure where their allocated monies received from central government went to, doctors in Anambra state were said to be on strike for months on end.

The importance of the same health sector is the one he is now preaching to us about. A bit hypocritical, n'est pas.

Cost of governance too high. Break it down so the country can move.

If Obi becomes president, he will eradicate wastages of scarce resources and the money saved can be used to run government efficiently and effectively.

The balabu government keep borrowing and wasting same on valueless ventures. Governance to them is a conduit pipe to steal and enrich themselves. What a people!!!

Try reason Mr Obi point without bias 😜. The countries we look up to for development never start with all these Nigeria ways. My state is renovating Hotel with over 25 billion, in a state that already has much hotel, destroying shops and killing micro businesses all because he wants to do walk way, people are dieing of hunger and insecurity yet he never visit the affected areas. Now people have started taking laws into their hands THIS WEEK ALONE 3 PEOPLE WERE MOB IN THE STATE CAPITAL claiming they are kidnappers even though they are not according to police report. Our president and governor should please stop spending on things that are not essential at the moment when hunger is increasing. Street is getting worse everyday.

Bus Terminals and Teaching Hospital Budget: Peter Obi and Lies are 5 and 6!

Today, Peter Obi engaged in another series of lies and misinformation, which have become his stock in trade. His latest attempt to de-market Nigeria is to attack plans by the Federal Government to build bus terminals in each geopolitical zone, amongst claims that the money voted for such is inflated.

First of all, Nigerians may recall that after the removal of fuel subsidy, the Federal Government pledged to invest in transport infrastructure to cushion the effect of the removal on Nigerians.

The plan was to provide CNG buses and terminals for these buses to make public transport more efficient and less expensive for citizens. Having a bus terminal in each geopolitical zone helps achieve that.

These terminals are being built not for ₦142 billion each, but at a total cost of ₦142 billion for the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. That is equivalent to $92 million.

In contrast, and please fact-check me, Egypt, a country that Mr. Peter Obi likes to praise as an example to Nigeria, just spent 5 billion Egyptian Pounds, equivalent to $105 million, on just one Central Bus Station in its New Administrative Capital.

Just one bus terminal in Egypt costs $105 million. Yet, Peter Obi is accusing the Federal Government of waste when Nigeria is spending just ₦142 billion, or only $92 million, to build bus terminals all over Nigeria!

And again, Peter Obi lied about the budget for Teaching Hospitals and Psychiatric Centres being under ₦100 billion, and claiming that that is smaller than what is budgeted for bus terminals.

Yes, the subvention for these hospitals may be under ₦100 billion, but these institutions do not survive on that. They are revenue-generating institutions whose generated revenue funds their operations. The ₦100 billion is just a subvention, not the money they rely on.

Peter Obi knows this. But he believes the Nigerian people are not smart enough to know this. So he is gaslighting the public, just like the lie he told during his Channels TV interview, where he falsely stated that President Tinubu has borrowed more money than Presidents Yar'adua, Jonathan and Buhari combined.

That claim was actually a lie. President Tinubu has actually reduced Nigeria's debt from $113.7 billion, which he inherited from General Buhari, to $97 billion today.

What Peter Obi did was to convert $97 billion to Naira, using today's rates, to give the impression that our debt has actually increased when they have actually reduced.

Peter Obi is a liar, and when he lies, he speaks his own native language!

Oga focus on the issue on ground not condemning the messenger.

My question to you is of what benefit is the bus terminals to Nigerians now given the present economic situation of Nigeria?
