A Nigerian pastor, Benjamin Egbaji, hailing from Cross River State, has reportedly been held in detention for two years in the Benin Republic over an alleged rape case involving a minor. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The situation was brought to light by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, who shared updates during a recent post on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to the minister, Pastor Egbaji is currently being held at the Centre National Hospital Universitaire (CNHU), where he is also battling serious health complications.

The allegation stems from a complaint filed by a Beninese woman, Pede Victoire, who accused the pastor of raping her 13-year-old daughter, identified as Ahouandjinou Dona Sarah. However, in a twist, the alleged victim later withdrew the accusation, which is now the subject of an ongoing appeal in court.

Ojukwu confirmed that the Nigerian government is actively working behind the scenes to ensure that justice is served and that Pastor Egbaji receives proper legal representation and medical attention.

“I appreciate the cooperation of the Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Justice, and the Government for facilitating access to Pastor Benjamin Egbaji,” she stated.

The case has stirred reactions among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, especially as questions continue to arise about the pastor’s prolonged detention despite the apparent change in the accuser’s testimony.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry says it remains committed to protecting the rights of its citizens abroad, especially in cases where legal processes appear to be delayed or mishandled.

The way girls and young ladies in these francophone territories use rape allegations to blackmail or get men into prison is alarming.

They wield so much power that their men are so afraid of them.

Many men are languishing in jail because they were falsely accused of rape.

It's a popular practice in Benin, Burkina, Mali and Senegal.

I know a 🇳🇬 minister who also got into trouble with the law in benin republic over a girl.... luckily for him, he was discharged after a year.

Ministry of foreign affairs should try to make sure that he gets justice.
How can you keep a human in detention when he has no crime to answer for? This is bad.

If the charge has been withdrawn, why is the pastor still being detained?
Why did the alleged victim accuse the pastor in the first place? Was this just to "teach the pastor a lesson"?
