I'm Struggling To Navigate This Phase Of My Life by Shadowpyper(op): 5:04pm On Aug 23, 2025
Hello nairalanders, please I need advice on how to go about this.

I’m 28 years old and recently completed my NYSC service. Honestly, I’m not sure what to do next, I'm just confused . During my service year, I was able to save 800k. I’ve already spent 200k to get an apartment and buying essential items, wnd I'm left with 600k. I’m now considering the best way to make use of it, maybe starting a business or learning a skill, I just confuse. I know the amount may seem small, but I just want to start from somewhere.

I have graphic design skills but I don't earn much from It.

I'm thinking of learning a tech skill but my money won't be enough to enroll for it and still take care of myself while learning

I just confuse, please I will appreciate it I can get useful advice here

BTW, whatever tech skills you are considering learning, you don't need to pay anything to learn it.

Personal experience here. YouTube and Telegram you can find all you need - but NOTE: TECH SKILLS ARE NOT GET RICH QUICK. Trust me. But it pays when it start yielding results.

Loud your graphic design gig and start targeting international clients.

I'm not a physical business person, so no advice from me on that end.

All the best - atleast you were wise to have saved, give yourself some accolades.

Put about 300k on a POS business bro. This will earn you daily income you can live on. Learning tech skill is quite expensive. Most schools that will issue you certificates after completion charge something in between 200k - 500k and above. So I can only advise you buy a laptop of about 150k if you don’t already have one( might be second hand once it’s working perfectly) then spend about other 50 on internet and work space. Then try to learn all your tech skills online so you will have your computer to practice as you are learning. That way it will be easier. Keep the other 200k just for unforeseen circumstance or some other business that you may think of later.

My little advice.

Keep that money first
Get a job and use your weekends and free time to learn a skill like barbing, electrical wiring, painting in a professional way
When you’re done learning use the money to buy equipments you need to begin
Change go still remain so you can start saving to top it up
When you have this basic survival skill
Then you can enter tech or any career you’ve been dreaming of because you have something to fall back to

Try any of the following.
Food stuffs business, buy goods in north and sell in south west, it’s very lucrative business.
You can do mini importation.
You can do farming.
You can also work with a school to teach so as not to continue consuming your saved money.
You can render cleaning service in your environment.
It’s well.
It’s after NYSC, one will really understand the meaning of “So help me God” at Nigeria anthem

OP, follow that advice above. But make sure you strategize your location before you start the POS business. Suffer now, enjoy tomorrow. I wish you good luck.

Please, make sure you invest. Don't let the money push you, I beg you. Everyday is not Christmas. Please, try and buy landed properties, if you can't afford that, invest in cryptocurrency. But Bitcoin, XRP, ADA, etc

We have similar life experience, only that i was way much younger when i finished NYSC.

The remaining 600k is counting down, your first course of action is to get a job, any job. You need cashflow. Work towards a good corporate job if you have a good degree. The purpose of the job is to meet your immediate needs, it should cover feeding, transportation, other little needs and leave you with atleast a little to save.

Then you can use your free time to upgrade your skill. Life takes us, along different paths, be open minded to new experiences, skills, business opportunities, you never know which path would establish you.

Lastly, pray pray pray. No be who run fastest dey carry first, you need divine help. Channel all your anxiety into prayers. As you are idling looking for a job, pray as many times a day. Also try the God of David Oyedepo, his God delivers speedily. Join the Living Faith aka Winners Church nearest to you.

You’re 28, just finished NYSC, and honestly—it’s normal to feel confused at this stage. A lot of people don’t admit it, but the transition after service year can be very overwhelming. The good news is, you already have what most fresh graduates don’t—600k in savings and a skill (graphic design). That’s a solid foundation.

Here’s some advice that can help you move forward without feeling stuck:

1. Don’t rush into using your 600k
That money is your cushion. If you pour it all into a business you don’t fully understand yet, or into an expensive tech course, you might end up stranded. For now, keep it safe as your “peace of mind” fund.

2. Maximize what you already know
You said you have graphic design skills. Instead of discarding it because it doesn’t pay much now, think of ways to scale it. For example:

Learn branding & UI design (they pay higher than just flyers/posters).

- Create a portfolio online and start reaching out to small businesses who need branding.

- Offer “design + social media” packages to businesses that don’t know how to present themselves online.
Sometimes, it’s not about learning a totally new skill, but deepening the one you already have.

3. If you want to switch into tech, do it smartly
Many tech skills (UI/UX, product design, digital marketing, data analysis) don’t require you to pay 400k+ for training. There are affordable courses on Coursera, Udemy, or even YouTube that can get you started. Later, when you’re sure of the path, you can invest in a structured program.

4. Use your money as leverage, not the main tool
Instead of thinking “what business can I start with 600k?”, think: “What skill can I grow that will make people pay me repeatedly?” Skills are assets that pay forever, businesses can collapse if you don’t have experience.

Your money should support you while you grow your earning power, not disappear into trial-and-error businesses.

5. Give yourself clarity, not pressure
You don’t need to have everything figured out immediately. Take 2–3 months to explore—deepening design, learning an adjacent tech skill, freelancing. From there, you’ll see clearer where to go.

Simple Roadmap You Can Try Now

Keep your 600k intact.

Start freelancing more aggressively with your design (expand into branding, UI design).

Dedicate a portion of your time (2–3 hours daily) to learning a tech-related skill online for cheap.

By 6–12 months, you’ll either:
a) Be earning more from design, or
b) Have transitioned into a higher-paying tech path with little financial stress.

Bro, you’re not behind. You just need clarity and consistency. If you treat your skills like seeds and water them daily, you’ll look back in a year and be glad you didn’t waste that 600k chasing quick wins.
