Almost every households, communities are doing this, it has become not only a habit but culture, for people burying the dead in their households.

There are designated places for burying the dead, like the cemetery, or graveyard.
Some religious bodies or churches have burial grounds in their surroundings specifically for burying the dead.

What do you think make people prefer burying the dead in their houses or compounds?

In African tradition we believe in reincarnation and we have seen it happen many times.

Regardless of what science claims, we still see newborns bearing birthmarks from a previous life and some children even recall where they once lived and who they were before death.

Deceased relatives are buried within the family compound so they may return and be reborn into the same bloodline — that's only if they had lived an honorable life. Those who brought shame, committed crimes or tarnished the family’s name are thrown into the evil forest to prevent them the chance to reincarnate within the family and serve as a lesson for the living.

I won't allow my parents to be buried far away from where we can see them regularly. Some parents are gods.
Some religion people will tell you it's wrong to burry at home but their parents is not buried at the cemetery including their prophets.

It is difficult to sell a land that already has a grave in it

What do you think make people prefer burying the dead in their houses or compounds?
In many parts of Nigeria and across Africa, it has become a cultural norm for families to bury their dead within their households or compounds, rather than in public cemeteries. While designated burial grounds exist — including cemeteries and church-owned graveyards — the practice of “home burial” remains deeply rooted. Several reasons explain this preference.

1. Cultural Tradition and Ancestral Connection
For many communities, the land is more than just property; it is a heritage. Burying the dead at home symbolizes a return to one’s roots and ensures that the deceased remains close to their lineage. Families see it as a way of keeping ancestors within reach, strengthening generational ties and identity.

2. Religious and Spiritual Beliefs
Traditional belief systems often dictate that the spirit of the dead must remain near family land for protection and guidance. Even within Christianity and Islam, cultural influence has blended with religion, allowing families to prefer home burials as an accepted practice.

3. Convenience and Accessibility
Another reason is ease of access. Families find comfort in being able to visit the graves of loved ones daily without having to travel to cemeteries. This proximity makes remembrance and grave upkeep much easier.

4. Social Status and Identity
In some cultures, burial in the family compound is a mark of honor. Elders, titled men, and people of high standing are often laid to rest on family land as a symbol of prestige and belonging. It signifies that the person is “of the soil” and has a permanent place within the community.

5. Economic Factors
Cemeteries and formal burial grounds sometimes require payment and compliance with regulations. Home burial removes such costs and formalities. For many families, this option is both financially and logistically more convenient.

6. Emotional and Sentimental Attachment
Finally, there is the comfort of knowing that a loved one “rests at home.” Families feel a deeper sense of closeness and continuity, reducing the feeling of abandonment that can come from burying them far away in a cemetery.

While designated cemeteries and graveyards exist for burials, cultural traditions, religious beliefs, social identity, emotional comfort, and economic convenience all contribute to the preference for burying the dead at home. This practice has become more than habit; it is now a cultural legacy that continues to shape how communities honor their dead.

To Secure the Properties of the Dead.

It's easier to Sell a Loved one's Property but the thoughts of selling your loved one together with their Property makes it hard.

I know of someone whom fought tooth and nail just to make sure her late spouse wasn't buried in his property. Last Last, she won and he wasn't buried in his Property.

2 Months Later, She sold the Property without Blinking.

It depends on a lot of factors some are religious beliefs some are due to to the inavailability of space due to urbanization.

The one I still can't explain is the Onitsha own they bury someone in a room retro fit the room and rent it out to outsiders I still dont understand why they do that though but people should be careful when looking for houses to rent.

If you have enough space in your compound it is more advice able to bury close to the house it even help you take care of the grave more often

A traditional Annang man like me must not be buried in a cemetery when I die

It's forbidden in my tradition

There's what we called Afe in our dialect
Afe is a traditional hut built in front of a compound, here is where every traditional Annang bury when they died.

Every traditional Annang man must build what they called Afe in his compound where he host his visitors and some traditional functions and ceremonies. Wherever he dies he must be brought home to bury in his Afe
