Yar'adua was the best Governor and best Presidential material of his time.
He is the only Governor apart from PO that saved and handed over huge money to his successor with zero debt. Go and check his records in Katsina state.
If Yar'adua contests Presidential election today, I will vote for him.

9jatriot:
Pairing Yar Adua and GEJ was his greatest undoing in terms of a successor plan but then what were his options? Odili was one of the hopeful, but to me not a good choice, Donald Duke was another hopeful, but being from the South, replacing another southerner was not going to work and Obj knew that.

Next was Atiku but he had fallen out of favor so Obj was not going to support him. I cannot remember who the nortrhers that were in conntensions were but for some weird reason, he went to recruit Yar Adua who was not even nursing any ambition and not particularly impressive as a governor. of Katstina state.

Between the "puppets" and the dragons who now ravage the country, which ones do you prefer now?

Obasanjo really meant well for Nigeria. If he has had his way with 3rd term maybe, just maybe Nigeria would not have been where it is

No president has been able to surpass his achievements

I remember, he would be hosted in a live phone in program where anyone can ask him anything about the country and he had good answers to give.

He knew so much about the nation

Keke, cheap telecommunications boast , debt forgiveness were all orchestrated by his administration

By the way

Seun, why did u stop the 40 character thing
it's obvious u don't know what u are saying

Obj messed up considering the resources he had at his disposal as president, he was given a new land to build but laid a very poor foundation that politicians today are banking on.

It was his third term ambition that made him increase money of politicians that make politics attractive today

When was obj so free and accessible that anyone could call him?

How many people had phones then?

Same man that declared state of emergency at will n used Maurice iwu as inec chairman?

Same man that orchestrated political assassination, till today top players against him were assassinated n nothing heard about it till now

Biodun556:
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he was in a hurry to see Nigeria attain its potential for greatness, stressing that he is now “getting close” to his departure lounge.

Obasanjo made the remark while reflecting on his years in public service and his new book, ‘Nigeria: Past and Future,’ where he assessed Nigeria’s leadership trajectory and criticised both past and present administrations.

According to him, his writings and interventions over the years have not been borne out of animosity but out of a desire to see that Nigeria progress.

Unfortunately and the sad reality is that, that Nigeria might not happen in your life time. Not when we are still languishing in the ocean of hopelessness.

I was watching his podcast recently and couldn't help thinking the same.

Unfortunate he might never see Nigeria get better.

He was one of the greatest leaders Nigeria ever had though. I can see how passionately he sometimes speaks about a better Nigeria.

Dude did his best as president but somehow the trajectory of progress after his tenure was diverted by those after him. Instead of building on what progress was made under him

It's unfortunate we now find ourselves in the situation where we presently are in!
No be curse. He will never see nigeria bettr. The system is that rotten.

Besides, Yar'Adua was from North Central as against Atiku from North East.

I'm not sure it was so much an OBJ thing as it was a PDP thing. Of course, one will not discount what you said about their (OBJ and Atiku's) falling out. You're very correct about that.

As for me, I just can't help thinking an Atiku presidency would be a disaster for Nigeria.

Obj has never spoken about this, at least not to my knowledge, but it was the complaint by those who know about power around that 2008 period.

The probe itself was probably well-intentioned but the approach is stopping the ship that had already sailed was a bad move. To be fair to Yar Adua, it was the Senate that was mostly responsible for that.

quote author=2mch post=136577714]

Smh. Lmao. If that is what OBJ told you. So where are the equipment now? Still at the port?
Where is this power equipment right now? Answer please. We should have stable electricity now.
Re: Obasanjo: I'm Getting Closer To Departure Lounge by 9jatriot(m): 3:44pm On Aug 25, 2025
Yar Adua better than Donald Duke?? I know you did that just to insert another failure Obi into the discussion. Obi is in the same category as Ortom, Bello and Orji.

Yar Adua was no where close to top 15 in his time, he may not have been known to be corrupt but nothing else. Some argue that he was mostly sick during his tenure and may have impacted his performance, but Obi was not sick so no excuse for poor performance. And please this is not about Obi, do not insert him into this discuss.

I don't know about yaradua Sha

Its OBJ thing, if its PDP thing Atiku would have had his way. Are you aware that as of 2002-2005, Atiku had all Northern PDP caucus and state Chairmen in his pocket?
Then again, if its PDP thing, Odili would have had his way to VP with Yar'adua.
We Nigerians underate OBJ because of petty politics. He is in the level of Nelson Mandela in my estimation. Apart from him, which other Nigerian President have been able to pull American President to Nigeria? Not once, twice

OBJ and GEJ did very well, if it were this current Fulani system of governance it won't be anything like smartphones not to talk of having internet connections but herdsmen connections cheesy

OBJ use the few times you have to vote for United States of Biafra recognition in Nigeria if you want to see heaven...

y will he pick his successor himself?

What was d role of inec?

Why not make it the battle of the best?

This was the same thing he wanted to do in the last election by supporting obi, OBJ have always wanted to b in control.

It's funny how today he's talking about electoral malpractice, go n read about Maurice iwu n OBJ era

We were in the voting field when results was announced, we never even vote.

Many people don't even have election materials in their area when election results was released.
That's y I look at some kids today n get angry cos they really don't know what this man did but today they are praising him.

This obj man is responsible for all d problem we face today, he introduced everything.

Name one problem we are facing today n I will tell u how obj caused it?

All the Ghana must go flying around in those days and the bloated pay for politicians that originally start with 1999 did what for the polity?
You can prove Ghana must go flying around started with Obj...?

Besides whether or not it did. I never said his government was utopia. And you can never have a perfect government.

What I said was that his government made some progress that ought to have been built on by the governments that came after him. But the trajectory of growth and progress changed after him. His government surely had it's Shortcomings but he built a good foundation that could have been improved upon.

The trajectory for progress really changed significantly during Goodlucks government. Mainly due to corruption that went almost unchecked under him. And a lot of people see Jonathan as a weak leader. Buhari's government made a 360 degree turn from whatever little progress GEJ made. Let me stop here

In any case obj in spite of his short comings is one of the greatest if not the greatest Nigeria has had.

He was a good leader with the interest of the country at heart.

To me he is the last real leader Nigeria had. Yaradua's time was too short to judge him so I would say he was neither nor there!

Thief Obasanjo should stop talking nonsense he had 8 good years to develop Nigeria and he practically destroyed the country.
Almost all our major challenges as a country originated from his presidency.
Obasanjo took over from military regime, after over 2 decades of wasteful military junta in Nigeria. He laid the foundation for democratic system, which APC came and destroyed.
