How Land Grabbing Fuels Bloodshed In Lagos Suburbs by voiceoftheupcom(op): 6:31am On Aug 25, 2025
From the sandy stretches of Ibeju-Lekki to the fast-developing outskirts of Ikorodu and Badagry, a hidden conflict is claiming lives, draining savings, and shaking families: land grabbing.

Once seen as a rural challenge, it has now transformed into a violent business involving omo onile (land speculators), dubious surveyors, community heads, and even corrupt officials. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Why Land Is the New Gold in Lagos

Ibeju-Lekki’s boom: With projects like the Dangote Refinery and the Lekki Deep Sea Port, land prices have skyrocketed — creating a “gold rush” mentality.

Urban expansion: Lagos’ population is pushing its borders, making peri-urban land a hot commodity.

Weak enforcement of laws: Despite the Lagos State Property Protection Law (2016), many communities still fall prey to land racketeers.

The Bloody Cost of Land Grabbing

In 2024–2025 alone, Lagos police and court records show:

Over 70 reported cases of violent land disputes in Ikorodu and Badagry axis.

Several killings linked to land tussles, with perpetrators often unidentified due to lack of proper land documentation.

Victims losing millions of naira in fake land sales, sometimes resold to multiple buyers.

Voices of the Victims

“I paid for a plot in Ibeju-Lekki in 2023. By 2024, three different families claimed ownership. Thugs came with cutlasses and chased us out,” — Kola, a civil servant from Lagos Island.

“My husband was attacked by omo onile when he tried to start building. They said we had to pay another settlement fee,” — Bose, widow, Ikorodu.

How the Syndicates Operate

Multiple allocation scam – Same plot sold to different buyers.

Forged documents – Fake survey plans and C of O.

Violent takeovers – Armed thugs intimidate or evict rightful owners.

These operations thrive because of weak monitoring by local authorities and complicit traditional rulers.

The Omo Onile Factor

“Omo onile” in Lagos are not new — but their tactics have evolved. From demanding illegal foundation fees to outright land hijacking, they’ve turned land ownership into a game of survival.

The Ripple Effect

Fear of investing in suburban Lagos.

Court congestion with land-related cases dragging for years.

Bloodshed and community displacement — especially in rural Badagry and parts of Epe.

What Is Being Done?

Lagos State government has set up special task forces to curb land grabbing.

Court-backed injunctions have been issued in Ibeju-Lekki and Ikorodu.

Residents are advised to always verify land titles through the Lagos State Land Bureau before purchase.

The Call for Stronger Action

Until enforcement matches the law, land grabbing will continue to thrive.

Government must prosecute offenders openly.

Communities must resist illegal levies.

Buyers must do due diligence,

Land grabbing fuels blood everywhere in the world. It is what the fight between Palestine and Israel is all about. It is what resulted to the Gulf war when Iraq invaded Kuwait, It is what creates tension between India and Pakistan..................it is a human deficiency.

Gentrification you mean? Once a new top project comes to a dry or low area, things skyrocket there. Lagos should fix up abeg.

If you like your sanity, try to avoid buying lands from anyone in Lagos. Even the real estate companies are not spared.

The funny thing are these so called Omo oniles after collecting these huge money, they spend it on alcohol and women.

Funny! You are just trying to deflate attention...Who would have thought that such exists in the land of accommodators? When someone said that people should be wary of investing in Lagos, most of you called for her/his head.

We all know how it is in the East that operates on a clanish system. There is no deflecting attention, you wouldn't be happy if I had made example with eastern Nigeria. Yet you have taken offense.

I just find your antics funny. That's all. The east is always the villain in the story. So I don't think the Easterners would take offense if you arrogate whatever to them.

That's why l got my land directly from my dad, Baba Titi of Epe

No omonile from ibeju to Epe dey near him land

Not even baale or oba for those areas

Bought all his lands in the 70s and 80s when lbeju and Epe were hamlets with old videos of purchase from the ancestors of the present kings and baales ( l witnessed a few of the old video recording of the land transactions)

Plus because he is older and knows all those baales and kabiyesi when they were young and ordinary citizens grin

People need to be oriented that before you purchase a land, pls, pls and pls verify the land from Lands Bureau. I understand these things cus I work there.
Registry dept would tell you the history of the land or who it belongs to.
Best is to confirm who you are buying from be it family or individual/s from the dept, do a survey to see where it falls before paying any amount of money requested from the so-called sellers. If not, trust me you are on ur own. Govt has been doing enough to orientate people on these simple things! Thanks

This is such an important conversation 👏.
A lot of land grabbing cases in Lagos come down to weak documentation and poor due diligence. Here are a few practical steps buyers can take:

1️⃣ Verify land titles directly with the Lagos State Land Bureau — never rely solely on agents or surveyors.
2️⃣ Check excision status (to confirm if the land is under government acquisition).
3️⃣ Insist on a registered survey plan and cross-check the red copy.
4️⃣ Document every payment with proper receipts, agreements, and witnesses.
5️⃣ Engage a property lawyer or trusted real estate firm — don’t go in blind.

Until enforcement gets stronger, buyer vigilance is the first line of defense.

So why is Wike grabbing land in Abuja despite the evidence you have provided above?

CosmeticChemist:
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has been accused of abusing his office to allocate sprawling hectares of Abuja’s most valuable lands to his son, Joaquin Wike.

This was revealed in an exclusive report by the Peoples Gazette, which referenced inside sources and official documents backing this staggering abuse of power orchestrated by the FCT Minister.

The report revealed that Mr Wike, the immediate former Rivers State governor, since assuming office in August 2023, signed off on over 2,000 hectares of prime real estate to his son.

It revealed that to achieve this, the minister bypassed regulations and skipped payment of critical fees, contrary to the Nigerian Constitution and civil service ethics.

The Peoples Gazette stated that these allocations span some of Abuja’s most exclusive districts, including Maitama, Asokoro, Guzape, Bwari, and Gaduwa. This amounts to roughly 2,082 hectares or about 40,000 plots, with an estimated market value of $3.6 billion.

“When we told the minister in April that he needed to slow down on frequent allocations to his own children, he said he was just starting because his goal was to make them the largest landowners in Abuja,” an aide told Peoples Gazette, requesting anonymity.

“We’ve worked with ministers before him, but we have never seen anything even remotely comparable to this.”

Documents obtained by Peoples Gazette indicate that the allocations were made in the name of a company, Joaq Farms and Estates Ltd, which was registered on October 10, 2024, just days before it began receiving land allocations from Mr Wike.

Rivers Coy Builds Mall On Abuja Site

Wed, 13 Aug 2025

A Port Harcourt based company, Hyper City Retail Limited is building a shopping mall on an Abuja plot of land meant for a memorial in honour of construction workers and hawkers killed in a 2008 building collapse on the site, Daily Trust investigations have revealed.

The land, located in Utako District of Abuja, the Federal Capital City, had its original allocation title revoked by then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Aliyu Modibbo Umar to serve as a deterrent to property developers for violating building regulations.

Situated on the road leading to Jabi Motor Part on P.O.W. Mafemi Crescent, the plot is numbered 230, Cadastral Zone B05, Utako District.

It is now a beehive of activities as the construction of a sprawling shopping mall has reached an advanced stage.

Investigations revealed that construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is handling the project on behalf of Hyper City Retails Limited, which has a chain of supermarkets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

A visit to the company’s website showed that Hyper City Retails has four branches in the Rivers State capital.

The state enforcement team against Land grabbers is very very weak. The ones causing all the chaos are influential and have ties to the ruling party and with that the reign of terror continues.
